Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
It was now the eighth day since that meeting. When I walked into the office, everything was as usual.

Michael rolled his eyes at the sight of me, his expression scornful. Paying him no mind, I went straight to my desk and turned on my computer.

I logged into my company email account and drafted an email. The subject line read, "A Friendly Reminder on Standardizing Attendance Management."

Then I attached the "Attendance and Working Hours Compliance Self-Check List" that I'd compiled from the employee handbook.

The email itself read, "Hello, everyone. Recently, the company has once again emphasized the importance of adhering to attendance policies. Mr. Larkin made it clear that rules are necessary to maintain order, and every employee must abide by company policy.

"After carefully studying the employee handbook and the attendance regulations, I discovered many details that are easily overlooked, which may have resulted in unintentional violations.

"I found 32 items in particular, such as failing to submit a request for approval for compensatory leave after working overtime, failing to submit approvals for flexible clock-ins within the required period, forgetting to enable location tracking when traveling on company business, exceeding the lunch break, and leaving work two minutes or more early.

"To prevent everyone from repeating my mistake, I have compiled this self-check list for your reference. Please be sure to review all of your attendance records from the past year. If you find any issues, do reach out to HR and take proactive action to handle your violations, lest you end up facing even more serious consequences."

After reading the entire thing, I was satisfied with what I'd come up with. It sounded like I was just a model employee trying hard to prove myself after losing my promotion.

Without any hesitation, I sent the email to everyone in the company.

At first, no one paid much attention to the email. Some deleted it without even reading it, while others merely glanced at it and decided it was too much trouble.

However, a few people opened the attachment and saw the list I had carefully prepared as a spreadsheet file. There were 32 attendance rules that were particularly easy to violate. Each one included the specific page number and section in the employee handbook.

The first row of the spreadsheet contained a line bolded in red.

"Violation Example: Exceeding Lunch Break by 1 Minute. Penalty: Revocation of Previously Announced Promotion Eligibility."

The first person to open the spreadsheet was Howard Reed from the tech department.

He had worked overtime for several days the previous month. Exhausted, he had forgotten to submit the required overtime approval form through the employee portal. He went through the spreadsheet while checking his own attendance records, and his expression grew increasingly grim.

Howard was now discovering that, based on company policy, his instances of overtime qualified as unapproved overtime. Not only would he not receive any overtime pay, but they would also be counted as attendance infractions.

And considering the precedent Patrick had set with my case, those attendance infractions would be enough to wipe out Howard's entire performance bonus for the year.

He snatched up his phone and rushed toward the HR department.

With Howard being the first to catch on, more and more people started getting antsy about it. No one could focus on work anymore. Everyone was discussing the list I'd created.

"What the hell? Flexible clock-ins have to be followed up with an approval within 24 hours, or it counts as an absence? I didn't submit mine this week!"

"Forgetting to enable location tracking while out on business means losing half a day's pay? I forgot last week!"

"The clock-in machine malfunctioned for two days last month, and I forgot to get my clock-in times corrected. Do those count as absences?"

"Oh, crap. I arrive ten minutes early every day, but I leave two minutes early. Does that still count as leaving early?"

Fear quickly spread throughout the entire office. In the blink of an eye, almost every desk was empty as everyone hurried toward the HR department, including Michael.

I raised my hand and checked the time. It was exactly 12:30 pm. I pulled out my blanket and watched with a smile as the tornado swept through the entire company.

A week later, someone new took over the position of director at the tech center. His name was Zachary Quentin, and he'd been transferred from the head office. Word was that he was a shrewd and capable manager who knew how to get things done.Everyone wondered how the new boss would clean up the mess Patrick had left behind. New bosses always wanted to establish their authority somehow. Who was going to be his first victim? To everyone's surprise, on his first day, Zachary didn't call for a company-wide meeting. He didn't summon the heads of the various departments for meetings, either. Instead, he had his secretary call just one person into his office. That person was me.I walked into the office that had once belonged to Patrick. It looked completely different now. The tacky rosewood ornaments and printed banner bearing the words "Success Is Always Within Reach" were gone. They had been replaced with minimalist modern furniture and several lush green plants.Zachary looked like a

The next day, the entire office was filled with festive cheer. At 10:00 am, a company-wide email titled "Important Notice Regarding Personnel Changes" was sent out. The email itself was rather brief."After careful consideration, the company will be optimizing the management team structure. Effective immediately, Patrick Larkin, formerly Director of the Technology Center, will be transferred to the archives department at the head office, where he will serve as a Senior Advisor."Attached beneath the email was an official document from the head office bearing the company's letterhead. After a moment of silence, suppressed laughter broke out in the office."The archives department? Isn't that where they keep outdated documents?""Senior Advisor, huh? The title sounds nice, but it's really just a cushy dead-end position. He's been put out to pasture.""Serves him right! He brought it on himself.""Of all people to piss off, he had to pick the Grim Reaper.""The Grim Reaper?""Co

I was the biggest "victim" of this situation and the one who'd set the whole thing off. If my punishment wasn't revoked, then everything Patrick had just said would prove to be a mockery. His seemingly sincere apology and earnest declaration that everyone would be treated fairly would end up being nothing but lies.Patrick's lips parted multiple times. He wanted to say something, but it felt like something was lodged in his throat. He couldn't get a single word out.He knew exactly what I was doing. I was putting him on the spot in front of everyone. If he said no, the goodwill he had just managed to regain would collapse in an instant, potentially triggering an even more furious backlash. If he said yes, he would be publicly admitting that his earlier decision had been completely wrong. He would be slapping himself in the face. His authority would be utterly destroyed. He would never be able to gain a strong foothold in the office again. The seconds kept passing. The conference

At 2:50 pm, a meeting notification popped up on the company's internal messaging system."Attention, all employees. Kindly gather for a meeting at 3:00 pm in Conference Room 1."The message came from the director's office. The moment of judgment had arrived. Everyone in the office seemed to have heard the call to arms, and they all stood at once, making their way to the conference room. This time, no one was late. No one dragged their feet. The large conference room quickly filled to capacity. People were even standing in the aisles. The air was thick with tension and anticipation.Michael showed up as well. He tucked himself into the least conspicuous corner, keeping his head lowered. He was afraid to meet anyone else's gaze. After heading into the conference room, instead of choosing a seat at random, I walked straight to the front row and took the seat right in the middle. It was usually reserved for senior management and honored guests, but I took it for myself today, and no

Although everyone returned to their desks, the restless unease still hung in the air.For the next few hours, the company remained in a strange state of paralysis. No one was in the mood to work. Everyone sat at their desks, frantically digging through their attendance records from the past year. The printers kept spitting out page after page. Everyone was cross-checking their records against the list I sent out, one item at a time.A chorus of groans and curses inevitably followed."I'm screwed. I forgot to enable location tracking twice while traveling on business last year. According to the rules, that counts as an absence.""Damn it! I've never submitted my flexible clock-in approval forms within 24 hours. Not once!""I've regularly exceeded my lunch break by three to five minutes. No one ever pointed it out before. Are they going to go back and check now?"Everyone found infractions they'd committed, some of which were major while others were minor. However, having seen how

Patrick's back looked stiff, his shoulders slumped as he trudged back toward the chaotic scene outside the HR department. The crowd automatically parted to let him through, but it wasn't out of respect. They only did it so that they could surround him, making sure he was under scrutiny."Quiet down, everyone!" Patrick took a deep breath and forced himself to put on an air of authority. "If you have a problem, speak up one at a time! Why have all of you gathered here like some rowdy mob?"He wanted to take back control of the situation, but no one was buying his act anymore. Howard was the first to step forward. He waved the attendance records in his hand and said, "I just want a straight answer, Mr. Larkin. Connor lost his promotion because he exceeded his lunch break by one minute."I just checked my own records and found that I forgot to submit approvals for three instances of overtime last month. According to the rules, that counts as an infraction, too. Does that mean I'm als
