Chapter 3

Author: Lupin Jr.
"Mom, I need help! Chad's going to get me killed!" I said.

"Jason, how dramatic do you want to be? You're just taking care of your brother," she snapped. "And don't feed me that. Chad's the sweetest boy in the world. You're the one who's always been a troublemaker. Don't you feel even a little embarrassed accusing him of the kind of things you'd do?"

She sounded more irritated than concerned.

"Don't ever call me in the middle of the night again."

The line went dead. I tried to call her back, but she had already turned off her phone.

Desolation settled over me. My parents had always been like this. Chad would run his mouth, spin some lie, and suddenly nothing I said could possibly be true. It hurt to realize that nothing had changed.

I was on the eighth floor. The stairwell was long and steep, not meant for running, but I could not stop. I kept going until a metallic taste filled my throat.

I nearly slipped several times. The sound of footsteps behind me never faded, so I forced myself to keep moving.

When I reached the ground floor, I glanced at the comments.

[No! Don't go down the stairs, man!]

[Teddy locked the outside door when he first entered the apartment, J! You can't get out that way!]

I froze, and my knees weakened. Still, the pounding steps behind me sent a fresh surge of adrenaline through my body.

If the exit ahead was a dead end, then this was where I would die.

The killer's footsteps drew closer. In my mind, I could already see the silvery flash of Teddy's blade.

I ground my teeth, bolted out of the emergency stairwell, and sprinted toward the elevator.

I jumped inside and jabbed every button on the panel. "Please work. Please work."

If the comments were right, the main door was no longer an escape.

I was certain Teddy would reach the elevator before the doors closed. After that, nothing would stand between me and his knife.

At the last second, I darted out of the elevator and dove into the large dumpster in the lobby.

The comment section held its breath with me.

A minute later, Teddy emerged from the stairwell. Through a narrow crack beneath the lid, I watched him stop in front of the closed elevator. He looked up at the display above the door, calculating which floor I might be heading to.

My heart pounded. Thank God I had not stayed inside the elevator. Teddy seemed convinced I had escaped that way.

If he would just leave, I could make my move. I could take the elevator down to the basement parking level and get out from there.

Teddy turned toward the stairs.

As he was about to leave, my phone rang.

My heart stopped, and sweat soaked my clothes.

Who would call me at this hour?

Teddy halted midstep. He turned slowly, scanning the lobby until his gaze fixed on the dumpster.

Sharp, acidic fear surged through me. I nearly gagged, but I clamped a hand over my mouth.

His footsteps shifted direction.

He started walking toward me.

Teddy spat on the man, then fixed his gaze on me. "You bastard. You're even better at hiding than that shitstain brother of yours, but I think this is the end for you. You've got nowhere left to run."He slammed his fist against the window, cracking it in a spiderweb pattern.Blood streamed from the center of the impact, yet he showed no sign of pain. If anything, the sight of it seemed to stir something primal in him. He laughed and pounded the glass again with his bare hand. The window shattered.I screamed and lunged toward the passenger side.Teddy smirked, thrust his arm through the broken window, and unlocked the door. He wrenched it open and grabbed my shoulders, his fingers digging in like claws."Get the hell out of there, you little bitch!" he snarled.I screamed and clutched at anything within reach as he dragged me out. It was useless. Teddy was far stronger than I was. I had no chance of resisting him. Then the man from before staggered to his feet. He lifted his w

Was I trapped inside the car like this? Yes.Did that mean the man could not get in? Yes.Unfortunately, he stroked the window and cackled. "Did you think this was enough to stop me?"He lifted his wrench and prepared to smash the glass.Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the parking lot. It was Teddy, the first murderer. He must have unlocked the entrance gate and come down to the basement to look for me.Any hope I still had drained away. I bit my lip in despair. What the hell was wrong with my luck? How had I run into two killers in a single night?A thought struck me. I shoved the key back into the ignition, drew a steady breath, and flashed the car's high beams, flooding the lot with light and exposing Teddy's face.I curled into the fetal position on the driver's seat, keeping low and perfectly still. All I could hear was my own heartbeat.[The killers have seen each other?! Are they going to duel for their prey?!][The strongest killer from a few hours ago versus the s

I hovered on the brink of unconsciousness when I heard a sharp crack.A cold draft brushed my face. It was fresh air.I lifted my head. The stranger had forced the elevator doors open with a wrench he had pulled from the inner pocket of his jacket.Through the gap, I could see the strip of concrete separating the basement parking level from the first floor. We had almost reached the basement when the blackout hit.The man jumped down first and extended his hand. I took it and climbed out, thanking him as my shoes hit solid ground. He pointed to a cab parked nearby. "That's my car, son. Let me drive you out of here."Relief surged through me. Even the comment section exploded.[Our boy did it! He met one go

I dove into the elevator and jabbed the close button while glancing over my shoulder. There was still no sign of Teddy. I let out a slow breath. The doors slid together, almost shut, until a hand shot between them and forced them back open.I pressed myself into the corner and shook like a leaf. Had Teddy finally caught up with me? Was this the end? I had not heard the emergency stairwell door open.I looked again. It was a stranger.Relief washed over me. With someone else inside, Teddy would not dare try anything. I was safe for now.As the doors closed, I hurried to the man and grabbed his wrist. "T-There's a murderer in the apartment. You've g-gotta help me. He's after me. H-He took my phone. Please, let me use yours so I can call the cops."He stared at me, clearly startled. After a moment, he nodded and handed over his phone.I thanked him and tried to make the call. There was no signal. The elevator blocked everything, so I would have to wait until we got out.The ride

Chad fell onto his backside, eyes glassy as he stared at me. "My phone's dead. And I can't move. I'm too scared."At that moment, I came within a breath of unlocking the door myself and letting Teddy claim his first victim for free.I smirked. "Then don't get up when he's standing over you. Don't move at all when he brings the knife down."The hint snapped him out of it.Chad scrambled up and helped me shove the couch against the door. He turned to me, panic sharpening his voice. "Now what?"I kept my eyes on the door. "There are about 80 units in this building. Trying every key until he finds ours will take time. We have to get out right now."I pointed at the window. "There. We'll go out that way and climb down the pipes."I lunged to the bed and knotted the sheets into a makeshift rope. I had just started tying one end around my waist when Chad shoved me aside with all his strength. It had taken everything I had just to make it back inside. I had almost nothing left to absor

  • I Won't Be A Murder Victim (Again)!   Chapter 6

This apartment was new. There were not many residents yet, damn it. At this rate, I had only a few minutes left to figure something out.I watched him step onto the fourth floor, then ran up the stairs as fast as I could, keeping my footsteps as quiet as possible.I made it back to the eighth floor and knocked on the door of my unit.No sound came from inside. I leaned close to the door and whispered, "Hurry up and open the door, Chad. It's me, your brother. Let me in."After a long pause, Chad's shaky voice came through. "N-No way, J. I'm sorry, but I'm too scared to do that for you."I forced my rage down. "Listen. Do you really think he'll let you off the hook just because he got to kill me? He's locking every damn floor on his way up, Chad. After he kills me, he'll wait right outside until you step out."Trust me. He'll camp here. Unless you can stay inside forever, one day you'll have to open this door, and he'll lunge at you. So let's give ourselves a fighting chance. Let m
