Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Sadie forced the paramedics to treat Finn first, even though he had only taken a single slap, while I was left to helplessly bleed out in the corner of that dead-end alley.

Living this life over again, I finally saw her feelings for me for what they truly were.

Give someone enough, and they may start treating your kindness as an obligation. Since she thought that throwing money at me would wash away her guilt, I was more than happy to play along.

…

Later that night, when word reached Sadie, she stormed into her friend's upscale nightclub like a raging fire. There I was, sitting in a VIP booth, holding a glass of liquor with a hazy, drunken look in my eyes.

A tall, fair-skinned hostess in a daring outfit stood beside me, respectfully pouring me a drink from a bottle.

The next second, a furious Sadie barreled over and cracked me across the face with a vicious slap.

"Ryder! Do you have any idea what you're doing? Have you completely lost your mind?"

The glass slipped from my fingers and shattered on the floor. However, the eyes looking up at her were completely sober.

I calmly pulled out a thick stack of cash, handed it to the hostess, gave her a soft reassurance, and sent her on her way. Only then did I turn my gaze toward a fuming Sadie.

"I honestly don't. Why don't you tell me, Madame CEO, what exactly did you just see?"

"Have you lost every ounce of shame, Ryder? Did I give you that money so you could come here and play around with other women?"

"Which of your eyes saw me messing around with anyone, Sadie?"

"You think I'm blind? That little skank was dressed like a hooker, and you're telling me you weren't doing anything?"

"She was standing six feet away from me. I didn't touch her, I didn't grope her, and I sure as hell didn't kiss her. I paid for a service, and she was pouring my drink. Since when is pouring a drink a crime?"

I glanced past her at the nightclub owner standing behind her, then pointed straight up at the security camera mounted on the wall. "Since your good friend already ran to snitch on me, why don't you pull the CCTV footage right now and see if I crossed any lines?"

I stepped right up to Sadie, lowering my gaze to look her dead in the eye. "I know I'm a married man, Sadie. Even if this marriage is a complete joke, I still have enough basic respect to honor my vows.

"Unlike you, who loves playing the saint while acting completely shameless behind closed doors.

"I've caught you hugging and holding hands with Finn more times than I can count. If we judge you by the same standard you just applied to me, who's the shameless one here?"

Sadie knew her little stunt wouldn't hold up under any real scrutiny. The club owner, who happened to be her buddy, had tipped her off that I was dropping heavy cash here, which was why she had sprinted over like a lunatic to catch me red-handed.

In her twisted worldview, our marriage was built on a dynamic where she wore the crown and I served as the footrest. She always placed herself miles above me, believing her little flings were harmless slip-ups, while me breathing near someone else was an unforgivable sin.

She completely forgot who had survived on stale buns dipped in cold water while putting her through college. She forgot who had sold their own plasma, and who had dislocated his shoulder in a fall while delivering food through heavy snow.

Facing my hard questions now, she couldn't hold my gaze. Yet that arrogant, sneering look of disgust remained plastered across her face.

"You never step foot in places like this. What kind of sick game are you playing today?"

That was when it finally clicked for Sadie. She noticed the high-end designer suit I was wearing, the top buttons casually undone to reveal my chest, and the expensive trace of cologne lingering in the air. I didn't look anything like the pathetic guy in a ratty t-shirt and faded jeans she was used to.

The thug was going for the knife! The next second, the knife appeared in his grip, and he lunged forward, thrusting the blade straight toward Sadie.Finn was betting that I would automatically step in to take the knife for Sadie like I always had, but he had no idea I had been reborn. So, I didn't move a single inch. The blade drove straight into Sadie's abdomen. Before she could even process what was happening, the brutal reality finally caught up to her.Blood poured out from the wound, and Finn lost his mind, screaming at the top of his lungs, "You idiots! Who told you to stab her?"Stab the guy! Go for the guy!"It was already way too late. The screams of nearby bystanders sent the thugs into a panic, and they bolted, sprinting away so fast they didn't even bother pulling the knife out of Sadie's stomach. In the distance, the wail of police sirens grew closer by the second.…Sadie managed to claw her way back from the brink of death, but that single knife wound destroyed

"Of course you didn't think it was suspicious because you didn't give a damn about that knife, and you didn't care about me either. You only cared about that pretty boy!"I shoved Sadie away from me. "Sadie, looking at you right now makes me sick to my stomach. I honestly wish you had never figured out that I died for you."You're inherently cold and hollow. Just like back when I scraped together every penny to put you through undergrad and grad school, you never actually loved me. You only kept me around because you needed me. "Later on, when you got rich and didn't need me anymore, you grew cold. And now that you're obsessed with Finn, you'll eventually grow tired of him too, and toss him aside just like you did to me."You don't love anyone. The only person you've ever loved is yourself."Tears streamed down Sadie's face as she clung to me for dear life. "No! I won't divorce you! I'm your wife, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I refuse to let you go!""In my past

Hearing those words slip from Sadie's lips made my ears ring and wiped my mind completely blank as if every sound in the world had vanished in an instant. My thoughts felt like a tangled mess, impossible to unravel, with no idea where to begin. Suddenly, the knife from my past life seemed to pierce through time itself, stabbing me in the back all over again and sinking deep into my chest."Sadie, if you have something to say, just spit it out. Stop grabbing onto me."My cold, lifeless words drilled straight into her ears. She instinctively let go, stumbling backward a couple of steps. A sudden film of moisture flooded her eyes, and her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white."Ryder, I remember everything. I'm so sorry."I stared at her, completely lost. "Speak clearly. What the hell are you talking about?""The past life! Everything that happened in the past life, I remember it all!"I felt completely dazed, my brain spinning out of control. "You mean... Thos

Sadie finished the bowl of bland soup, and though the pain in her stomach eased up a bit, it still felt thoroughly uncomfortable."Alright, there's nothing else for you here. You should head back to work."With his eyes glued to his phone screen and refusing to look up, Finn replied, "I'll hang out here with you. It's not like anything major is going on at the office anyway."I'm grabbing dinner with some friends tonight. What do you want to eat? I can pick something up and bring it back for you."Sadie lay back down on the hospital bed. "No thanks," she said flatly. She pulled out her phone and started scrolling aimlessly until her thumb suddenly stopped moving. She finally figured out where Ryder had gone.On his social media feed, Ryder had posted a grid of nine photos. He was standing beside an off-road vehicle against the backdrop of a boundless, desolate desert. With his arms thrown wide and wearing a pair of sunglasses, Ryder was flashing a wild, carefree smile. Far in

That thought suddenly bubbled up from the depths of Sadie's mind, scaring even herself. She couldn't wrap her head around why such a notion had popped into her head out of nowhere. Two hours later, a tardy Finn finally sauntered into the hospital room carrying a takeout container. He popped the lid off the box, revealing a trendy takeout box containing a greasy burger and fries.A fresh wave of irritation spiked in Sadie's chest. Back when she used to get sick, Ryder would live in absolute terror that she wouldn't have an appetite, constantly cooking up different kinds of soups and making sure everything was light, refreshing, and easy on her stomach. If Ryder had ever dared to shove a box of greasy burger and fries in her face like this, she would have hurled the takeout container straight across the room at him. However, the person bringing her food wasn't Ryder. Sadie fought down the nausea churning in her stomach, forced herself to pick up the burger and shoved it into her mo

Later that night, I went out again.Sadie ended up calling an ambulance, and the paramedics rushed her to the hospital. Her migraine had been tormenting her all day. In addition, she had knocked back a couple of drinks at a business dinner, having forgotten to bring an umbrella and getting soaked when she stepped out of the car.Whenever she had a headache in the past, I would always rub her temples to ease the pain, but this time I didn't lift a finger.Every time she came home reeking of alcohol from corporate dinners, I would prepare a warm glass of honey water to sober her up, but this time I didn't even bother boiling water.Whenever it rained outside, I would stand by the doorway holding an umbrella waiting for her to come home, but this time I wasn't even in the house. If she got caught in the rain, I would dry her hair with a towel, run a hot bath for her, and have her medicine laid out and ready in advance, but this time I prepped absolutely nothing. So, Sadie caught a
