Chapter 9

Author: Honey Pome
Seeing that no one pursued the matter and with no way to investigate, it eventually faded into oblivion.

Though Raines was dead, I was not as relieved as I imagined I would be. Unease still gnawed at my heart.

Back home, I was often restless. I constantly felt that something terrible was about to happen.

The manul was silent for a moment, then shook its head regretfully.

It drew closer and closer that it almost touched me. My palms grew sweaty with nervousness.

Unexpectedly, it only rubbed against me frantically. It was either begging for affection or saying goodbye.

Her dreams were shattered.Raines’ reputation was ruined beyond repair, and no respectable company would hire her. With nowhere else to turn, she took a job as a bartender. Day after day, she was forced to drink until she was completely wasted. Often, sleazy old men took advantage of her. When she heard my career was taking off, she seethed with jealousy and could not hold back her anger. She spent $300, slept with people for free, and hired thugs to cripple me. She aimed to ruin my life forever.A chill ran through me as cold sweat broke out on my back.If not for manul’s timely intervention, I would have lost a leg! These men, who could not scrape together a few hundred dollars, spent their days brawling and committing crimes. They feared nothing.Seeing the cuts and bruises covering their bodies, I pretended to show mercy.“If you hadn’t listened to Raines, you wouldn’t have been injured like this. Since you’ve learned your lesson, I’ll let it slide. Now, get out of here!”

Soon, Raines was fired and blacklisted from the industry.Finding a new job here was impossible. With no other choice, she slunk back to her hometown. Before leaving, she glared at me with bloodshot eyes. “Molly, I’ll make you regret this.”She always got her revenge, and I knew she was not bluffing. From that day on, I carried a fruit knife with me and made time to learn kickboxing.I lived in constant fear for nearly a year, but I never saw the manul or Raines again.I threw myself into my work and landed several big projects. My salary doubled.I moved to a nicer neighborhood. At the company party, I got a little carried away and had a few too many drinks. I felt dizzy and disoriented. On my way home, I kept feeling like someone was following me. I tried to run but was cut off by several burly men. Their menacing expressions made me freeze. I stepped back instinctively. My voice trembled as I said, “W-what do you want?”“Don’t be scared. Someone asked me for a favor.

Driven by love for their daughter, her parents hired a professional team to capture the manul. The crew thoroughly searched every corner of the neighborhood and every household. The commotion grew so intense that residents became increasingly dissatisfied.Left with no choice, the neighborhood committee promised to help find the manul. But Raines refused to believe them and lost her temper in public. “All you do is talk nicely and ignore the problem! You won’t lift a finger to actually solve the problem!”The neighborhood committee members were embarrassed and ignored her. After nearly a week of chaos, she found the manul. She rushed over to confront me.She slammed the cage in front of me as she gritted her teeth. “Molly, you’re going to get me killed!”I genuinely thought she had lost her mind. “What does this have to do with me?”Raines then presented the video of me feeding the manul. She was convinced I had informed the manul of her address and that I had instigated it

Someone in the group quickly replied to the message.[That isn’t a cat. It’s a ferocious beast that looks like a cat! It’s untamable and highly dangerous.]Someone asked how such a beast ended up in the neighborhood.Another user, posting under a fake account, revealed it was adopted by a tenant who planned to use it to make money by making vlogs. But during the first video shoot, it bit a child and escalated the situation in the neighborhood committee. Luckily, the roommate she tried to pin it on had evidence to clear her name. Otherwise, she would be in big trouble.Though no names were explicitly mentioned, everyone guessed who the people were talking about.Only then did I realize that Raines had offended quite a few people in the neighborhood. It was not surprising, really. She loved taking advantage and never backed down from a fight. If anyone ever crossed her, she always resorted to every dirty trick in the book to harass them.People claimed Raines had an ulterior motiv

After Raines left, Jake quietly peered through the door crack.I pretended not to notice and moved to close the door on him. He hurriedly reached out to stop me. His face had a fawning, eager smile.“Sorry, I didn’t mean to get you in trouble. It’s just that Raines holds grudges so easily. If I cross her, she’d never let me off the hook!”His words ignited an inexplicable rage within me.Just because I am easygoing did not mean I should be bullied! It did not mean I should always take the fall for everyone else.I forced myself to rein in my anger. “Are you going to keep doing this?” I asked coldly.“Raines paid a year’s rent upfront. She won’t move out easily mid-term. She suffered a loss today, so she might take it out on you.“Don’t you want to crush Raines’ arrogance so she won’t cause trouble again?”My voice was hushed, yet it felt like a blade that pierced straight into his heart. He hesitated for a few seconds before finally nodding. His Adam’s apple bobbed, as if he h
