Chapter 2

Author: Pancakes and Eggs
When I turned around to wash my face and get ready for bed, Samuel said, “It’s not because of her.”

Those words came out of nowhere, but I understood what he meant.

He was saying that he was not divorcing me because of Mia Louise.

But that was no longer important. I did not want to be with a man who cheated on me.

“You’re sleeping in the guest bedroom today.”

I locked the master bedroom, and the tears I had been holding back finally fell.

I had thought that Samuel was joking when he asked for a divorce, but that was far from the truth.

The next morning, I packed my luggage, ready to move out.

When I walked past the guest bedroom, I instinctively looked inside.

Samuel was not there.

It seemed the sounds I heard last night were not in my dream.

“You’re scared? Alright. I’ll come over right now.”

That was followed by Samuel’s hurried footsteps.

He walked to the master bedroom and stood in front of the door for a long time before leaving.

Samuel had never lost his composure because of me during our three years of marriage.

Once, when I was out on a social gathering, someone got handsy with me, and I immediately called Samuel to ask for help.

But he only said, “You have to grow up. This is something you can take care of.

“My time is precious. Don’t call me for such stupid things.”

Yesterday, I kept trying to convince myself that I was dreaming, but when I looked into the guest bedroom, I could no longer lie to myself.

After I stifled my sadness, I moved all of my belongings to the apartment that I had lived in before I got married.

To my surprise, when I arrived in front of the courthouse on Monday morning, Samuel did not show up.

I called Samuel, but no one answered the phone.

Refusing to give in, I called him repeatedly until the call finally went through.

“Why aren’t you here?” I immediately asked.

But Samuel was not the one who answered the phone.

“Are you looking for Samuel? He’s in a meeting. I’ll ask him to call you back once the meeting ends.”

The moment she spoke, I knew it was Mia, the woman who went with him to the concert.

She had responded to Samuel’s confession during the concert. I could never forget her voice.

Even so, I was not expecting Samuel to have found her a job in his company.

“Who are you?” I could not help and asked.

“Mia Louise, Samuel’s secretary.”

Secretary?

I sneered.

I had once argued with Samuel and demanded that he let me work at his company. I was even fine with a small job.

I just loved him too much and wanted to see him every day.

But Samuel rejected the idea immediately.

“I might be the company president, but I can’t abuse my power like that.

“If I hire you, how will the other employees look at me? Dawn, don’t make things hard for me.”

For his reputation’s sake, I never spoke about it again.

But he had hired Mia and made her his secretary.

I could not take it anymore. I hung up and went straight to his company.

Since I had accompanied Samuel to his company’s dinner parties before, all of his employees knew me.

But when they greeted me that day, they had strange looks on their faces. I just pretended not to notice.

Soon, I made it to Samuel’s office.

When I got there, I knew why they were giving me such strange looks.

They pitied me.

Samuel’s formerly black-and-white office was filled with cute decorations that he did not care for. There was also an office table right next to his own.

I pushed down the bitterness I felt and walked to the extra office table, only to find a work ID left behind.

Mia’s name was on it.

News reporters surrounded me as I tried to leave the hospital after getting my arm bandaged.“Mrs. Gardner, how does it feel to have your husband’s mistress attack you?”“Is it true that your brother became a test subject and received the first vaccine for leukemia?”I looked at the cameras and smiled. “I don’t know why the ‘mistress’ came to me, but Samuel Gardner did visit me,” I said meaningfully. “Cole was a test subject for the leukemia vaccine.”When the reporters heard this, they berated her with another string of questions. “You’re already married to Mr. Gardner, so why did you take the risk and let your brother become a test subject?”I continued smiling. “Because Samuel asked me for a divorce. It was the only thing I could do for Cole’s health.”The reporters burst into an uproar at that. I did not know what they were going to write in their articles, nor did I care. At night, I received a call from the police station. The police told me that they had arrested

I knew that Samuel had been looking for me all this while, but the medical team had locked down all information regarding Cole and my whereabouts for security purposes. When we left the country, the medical team had even sent a private plane over to get us. “Can’t you forgive me, dear?”The question made my heart ache. While we were together, Samuel was always aloof. I had used many words of endearment to address him, but he only ever called me by my name. Later, I could not take it anymore and argued about it with him. After that, Samuel had used a term of endearment but only reluctantly.Yet, he was calling me “dear” so easily at present. That meant that he could have done so in the past as well, but he was just unwilling to do so. Still, love that came too late was of no use. “I can explain. What I said during the concert wasn’t what I meant. I couldn’t explain myself clearly that time. “I never regretted being together with you. I just—”“You just didn’t know how

As a test subject of the clinical trial, Cole was at the center of it all.Samuel would surely see that and find out where we were. But that did not matter anymore. What was important was Cole’s health. I rented a two-bedroom apartment with the money the director had paid us and moved in. Neither Cole nor I had much luggage. We went overseas with nothing much and returned with nothing much as well.If I had to be exact, I did bring back something. I brought back a healthy Cole.At exactly 12:00 p.m. UTC, the vaccine was revealed to the public. Once the media found out that Cole was the test subject, they started digging around for more information on him. I had not expected that the first person to find us would be Samuel. When I came back home from buying some groceries with Cole at night, I found Samuel standing in front of the door. I instinctively stopped. Cole noticed my reaction and looked around in confusion to find out what was wrong. The moment he saw the per

Mia ran away crying when she saw this, but Samuel did not care. All he wanted to know was Dawn’s whereabouts. …At that moment, I met up with the medical team abroad and followed them to their hospital. “Miss Wilson, are you sure you want to allow your brother to be a test subject?” the director asked as confirmation. “You don’t have to answer it in a hurry. I’d like to lay out the pros and cons of this vaccine once more.“We only managed to develop this vaccine after five years of research. It has an 80% chance of curing leukemia in patients.“But that also means that it has a 20% chance of failing. If it fails, the patient’s condition might worsen. They might even die.”I felt uncertain again when I heard that. In the past, Cole and I only had each other. This time, in what was practically an impulsive decision, I had brought him overseas. Was I being selfish?Cole suddenly walked in. He wore a mask that looked too big on him, even though it was normal-sized. “I want

It documented the life they had together after they were married. [Samuel took me out for steak today. It was tasty, but I didn’t know how to eat steak as I had never had one before. Luckily, Samuel didn’t look down on me. With his help, I learned how to cut them!]When Samuel saw those words, he recalled the events of that night. That was their first date, and he had taken matters into his own hands by booking the restaurant. But Dawn did not know how to eat steak. When he saw her sitting uneasily across from him, he finally realized something was off. So, he taught her how to cut up her steak and exchanged his plate for hers after he cut everything up for her. At that time, Dawn had blushed as she looked at him. “Thank you,” she had said softly. Samuel proposed to her that night, and Dawn agreed to it without even thinking twice. After that, she assumed he might think that she had said yes only because of his money, so she hurriedly said, “I don’t want your money. “Is it Dawn?” Mia snapped impatiently. She grumbled, “Didn’t you say that you already spoke to her? Why is she still pestering you?”Samuel ignored her and answered the call. “What is it?”“Mr. Gardner, please go online!”When Mia heard the voice, she could immediately tell that it was Jack. She chuckled awkwardly, since she had expected it to be Dawn who was interrupting their date.Samuel quickly logged in to Twitter to check the trending tags, and he saw the marriage certificate, along with the tag #SamuelGardnerwasmarried. For some reason, he did not seem to feel angry. Instead, he felt relieved.Mia saw every bit of Samuel’s reaction, and she bit down on her lip as she looked at him indignantly. “Where’s Dawn? Tell her to delete the post.” When he spoke next, Samuel’s voice had regained its usual aloofness. “I couldn’t contact her, that’s why I had to call you.”Samuel panicked, and he instinctively raised his voice. “What do you mean you can’t contact her?”“She won’
