Before my voice faded away, my phone rang.

I looked at the phone screen. It was Samuel Gardner, my husband.

I rejected the call.

When I looked up, I found my face still on the screen.

I put on a perfect smile. “Samuel, I agree to the divorce. I’ll see you at the courthouse at 9 a.m. on Monday.”

Whispers rose all around me. Some of the friendlier people even approached me to comfort me.

A girl handed me a tissue and gave me a sympathetic look. “You shouldn’t feel sad over that piece of trash, girl.”

I thanked her and wiped away my tears. I also sang the song with the singer.

During that entire time, all I could think about was Samuel asking me for a divorce a few days ago.

It had happened during breakfast, and Samuel had looked at me coolly when he said, “Let’s get a divorce.”

I froze with a soft-boiled egg in my hand as I stared at him in surprise.

“What did you say?” I was wondering whether I was hearing things.

Ever since I agreed to Samuel’s proposal three years ago, we had lived a happy life together.

Even though he was still as aloof as ever and was only ever passionate in bed, we had no relationship troubles.

I just thought he was joking when he suddenly asked for a divorce.

But Samuel looked at me seriously. “Let’s get a divorce. I’m fed up with this life.”

When I did not answer, he chuckled bitterly.

Samuel stopped coming back home from that day on. Whenever I called him, he would say that he was out on a business trip.

Later, I found that the singer I had liked for more than a decade was organizing a concert in my city, so I sent him a text asking him to come with me.

He had said no again with the excuse that he was out on a business trip.

To think that he had actually come with someone else to the concert!

I knew the woman beside him. She was in his graduate class yearbook.

While he had taken pictures with other girls in the yearbook, he always had his lips pursed and looked very aloof in them.

It was why the picture with that woman was so different from the rest. Samuel smiled happily in that picture. It was the kind of smile he never showed me.

After seeing that woman, I finally realized that he was not always aloof. He could smile happily when he was with the person he loved.

After the concert, I saw a face I knew at the door.

It was Samuel, and he looked troubled after being caught red-handed.

I instinctively looked around, but I did not see that woman.

I did not intend to linger long and was about to leave, but Samuel grabbed my arm.

“Let’s talk.”

I did not turn around and only asked, “Is it because of her?”

Samuel did not say anything. Based on what I knew about him, his silence was basically a confirmation.

I sneered but did not ask any more questions. I yanked my arm back and left.

When I got home, I found Samuel sitting in the living room.

I was surprised to see him, since he had not been back for more than ten days.

I blurted out, “Don’t you need to send her back?”

Samuel scowled but did not answer.

It was only then that I realized how blunt my question had been, and I did not demand an answer.

News reporters surrounded me as I tried to leave the hospital after getting my arm bandaged.“Mrs. Gardner, how does it feel to have your husband’s mistress attack you?”“Is it true that your brother became a test subject and received the first vaccine for leukemia?”I looked at the cameras and smiled. “I don’t know why the ‘mistress’ came to me, but Samuel Gardner did visit me,” I said meaningfully. “Cole was a test subject for the leukemia vaccine.”When the reporters heard this, they berated her with another string of questions. “You’re already married to Mr. Gardner, so why did you take the risk and let your brother become a test subject?”I continued smiling. “Because Samuel asked me for a divorce. It was the only thing I could do for Cole’s health.”The reporters burst into an uproar at that. I did not know what they were going to write in their articles, nor did I care. At night, I received a call from the police station. The police told me that they had arrested

I knew that Samuel had been looking for me all this while, but the medical team had locked down all information regarding Cole and my whereabouts for security purposes. When we left the country, the medical team had even sent a private plane over to get us. “Can’t you forgive me, dear?”The question made my heart ache. While we were together, Samuel was always aloof. I had used many words of endearment to address him, but he only ever called me by my name. Later, I could not take it anymore and argued about it with him. After that, Samuel had used a term of endearment but only reluctantly.Yet, he was calling me “dear” so easily at present. That meant that he could have done so in the past as well, but he was just unwilling to do so. Still, love that came too late was of no use. “I can explain. What I said during the concert wasn’t what I meant. I couldn’t explain myself clearly that time. “I never regretted being together with you. I just—”“You just didn’t know how

As a test subject of the clinical trial, Cole was at the center of it all.Samuel would surely see that and find out where we were. But that did not matter anymore. What was important was Cole’s health. I rented a two-bedroom apartment with the money the director had paid us and moved in. Neither Cole nor I had much luggage. We went overseas with nothing much and returned with nothing much as well.If I had to be exact, I did bring back something. I brought back a healthy Cole.At exactly 12:00 p.m. UTC, the vaccine was revealed to the public. Once the media found out that Cole was the test subject, they started digging around for more information on him. I had not expected that the first person to find us would be Samuel. When I came back home from buying some groceries with Cole at night, I found Samuel standing in front of the door. I instinctively stopped. Cole noticed my reaction and looked around in confusion to find out what was wrong. The moment he saw the per

Mia ran away crying when she saw this, but Samuel did not care. All he wanted to know was Dawn’s whereabouts. …At that moment, I met up with the medical team abroad and followed them to their hospital. “Miss Wilson, are you sure you want to allow your brother to be a test subject?” the director asked as confirmation. “You don’t have to answer it in a hurry. I’d like to lay out the pros and cons of this vaccine once more.“We only managed to develop this vaccine after five years of research. It has an 80% chance of curing leukemia in patients.“But that also means that it has a 20% chance of failing. If it fails, the patient’s condition might worsen. They might even die.”I felt uncertain again when I heard that. In the past, Cole and I only had each other. This time, in what was practically an impulsive decision, I had brought him overseas. Was I being selfish?Cole suddenly walked in. He wore a mask that looked too big on him, even though it was normal-sized. “I want

It documented the life they had together after they were married. [Samuel took me out for steak today. It was tasty, but I didn’t know how to eat steak as I had never had one before. Luckily, Samuel didn’t look down on me. With his help, I learned how to cut them!]When Samuel saw those words, he recalled the events of that night. That was their first date, and he had taken matters into his own hands by booking the restaurant. But Dawn did not know how to eat steak. When he saw her sitting uneasily across from him, he finally realized something was off. So, he taught her how to cut up her steak and exchanged his plate for hers after he cut everything up for her. At that time, Dawn had blushed as she looked at him. “Thank you,” she had said softly. Samuel proposed to her that night, and Dawn agreed to it without even thinking twice. After that, she assumed he might think that she had said yes only because of his money, so she hurriedly said, “I don’t want your money. “Is it Dawn?” Mia snapped impatiently. She grumbled, “Didn’t you say that you already spoke to her? Why is she still pestering you?”Samuel ignored her and answered the call. “What is it?”“Mr. Gardner, please go online!”When Mia heard the voice, she could immediately tell that it was Jack. She chuckled awkwardly, since she had expected it to be Dawn who was interrupting their date.Samuel quickly logged in to Twitter to check the trending tags, and he saw the marriage certificate, along with the tag #SamuelGardnerwasmarried. For some reason, he did not seem to feel angry. Instead, he felt relieved.Mia saw every bit of Samuel’s reaction, and she bit down on her lip as she looked at him indignantly. “Where’s Dawn? Tell her to delete the post.” When he spoke next, Samuel’s voice had regained its usual aloofness. “I couldn’t contact her, that’s why I had to call you.”Samuel panicked, and he instinctively raised his voice. “What do you mean you can’t contact her?”“She won’
