Chapter 2

Author: Little Shadow
Life in prison was anything but easy.

On my second day behind bars, a new inmate who ran the cell block showed up. He grabbed me by the head and pinned my face against the floor. The stench of urine burned my nose.

In a menacing tone, he said, "You're Matthew Jensen, aren't you?"

He planted his foot on the back of my hand and ground it into the floor. "Someone paid us to make sure those pretty eyes of yours never see daylight again."

I stared at him in terror. "Who? I'm taking the blame for Seth—"

"The precious little son of the Ingram family, of course."

The man held up a toothbrush handle he'd sharpened to a point with a vicious grin on his face. "He said if you're ruined in here, you'd never be able to compete with him again."

A searing pain exploded through my head. I screamed and curled up on the floor, writhing in agony. Blood poured from my left eye until it became nothing but a mangled mass of flesh.

The prison clinic gave me some rushed treatment afterward and removed the damaged eye. The wound became infected. I ran a dangerously high fever for three days and nearly died.

Those days were brutal, but there were still good people around me, like Gabriel Chapple.

When the men Seth had bribed were beating and kicking me, Gabriel had thrown himself over me without hesitation, shielding me with his frail body.

He pressed his lips tightly and said to me, "Stay alive, Matthew. As long as you live, there's hope."

Unfortunately, I was released early. I didn't have any way to contact him, and I had no idea how I would ever see him again.

The next morning, I woke up from hunger. My stomach felt like it was on fire. It was an old problem I'd brought home from prison. I had a severe stomach ulcer.

I walked into the dining room to find the table covered with an elaborate breakfast.

Sheryl casually filled a plate with shrimp cakes that had gone slightly cold and pushed it toward me without even looking at me.

She said, "Seth wanted these, so Isabella went all the way across town to buy them first thing this morning. He doesn't eat much and can't finish them. Don't waste food. You can have what's left."

Seth shot me a smug glance as he boasted, "You should try them. Isabella went all the way to Royal Delights downtown just to get these. She waited in line for three hours."

Steam rose from the cakes, making my left eye throb. The artificial eye seemed to rub dryly against the inside of my socket, bringing tears to my eyes.

After I was brought back to the Ingram family, I'd once had some genuinely happy days.

At first, when Sheryl saw my rough, calloused fingers, her eyes had reddened as she swore she would make up for everything I'd suffered.

She had said, "I'll always have your back, Matthew. Anyone who dares bully you has to answer to me."

When I mentioned I wondered what snow was like, she'd chartered a private jet to Hefrane that very night. When I casually complimented a designer's clothes, she'd bought every new piece from the latest collection and had them delivered to my room the next day.

Isabella had been just as gentle. She was born into privilege, but she'd bend down to tie my shoelaces and make me chowder clumsily whenever I was sick. If I'd told her I wanted the stars, she would've found a way to climb a ladder and pluck them from the sky for me.

Our engagement came naturally. She'd held my hand and promised, "Matthew, I'll always be by your side. I'll never betray you."

But everything changed because of Seth's repeated attempts to turn us against each other and frame me.

He smashed the emerald pendant our mother had left behind. Then, he cried and claimed I'd tried to steal it from him. Without bothering to find out the truth, Sheryl slapped me across the face and called me an ungrateful wretch who didn't know his place.

One night during a thunderstorm, Seth pretended to be sick. He tricked Isabella into going to him, claiming he was terrified of thunder.

It had been my birthday. Isabella had promised she'd stay and cut my birthday cake with me.

Instead, what I got was a photo she'd posted online. She was with Seth at an amusement park, and they were happily watching the fireworks.

The caption read, "As long as you're smiling, I'll brave any storm to be there."

Meanwhile, I sat beside my melting birthday cake in an empty mansion and waited through the entire night.

Perhaps genuine love was always fleeting. Or maybe what I thought was love had only ever existed through the filter I'd placed over it.

But back then, I didn't understand any of that. I was a teenager, and I'd valued my pride above everything else. I couldn't understand how the two people who had once loved me so earnestly could change overnight.

So, I threw a tantrum. I yelled hysterically as I smashed the cake onto the floor.

But all I got in return were their cold, disdainful looks.

That was when I finally understood something. When they loved me, they considered my prideful and outspoken side as me having a candid character. But once they stopped loving me, I became nothing more than an unreasonable troublemaker.

Sheryl stared at the news alert and shook her head frantically while mumbling, "No… No, this can't be…"She clutched her head and broke down sobbing. "Matthew, I didn't know… I had no idea! If I'd known—"Gabriel cut off her confession coldly. "If you'd known, would you have believed him? No, I think you wouldn't. You would've told Matthew to endure it again for your precious little Seth."Sheryl fell silent. Her face paled, and she couldn't utter another word.Isabella looked equally devastated. She reached out to me, but I immediately shook her off.She apologized, "Matthew, I… I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. I'll take you to the best doctors…""Make it up to me?" I pointed to my lifeless prosthetic eye. "Can you make this eye grow back?"Then, I pointed toward the sky. "Can you bring Bruce back to life? Your apologies aren't worth a damn."I turned and refused to look at these repulsive people again. Gabriel supported my unsteady body and led me away. After that night, t

My heart sank to my stomach."What do you mean?" I asked, feeling a lump in my throat.Just then, the phone I'd been clutching suddenly vibrated. A breaking news alert had appeared on my screen. The headline read, "Fire at Outskirts Nursing Home—Victims Identified, Several Dementia Patients Among Those Killed."My hands began trembling violently. I could barely tap on the link with my fingers. As Seth watched my reaction, the smile on his face became even more vicious. "Do you see it, Matthew?"He leaned close to my ear and whispered the cruelest words imaginable. "That old man has been dead for a long time. He died on the very day you got out of prison. On the same day you lowered your head and agreed to be my assistant, that nursing home caught fire."I used the Ingram family's influence to pressure the media into keeping the story quiet. I deliberately had the news released today. So, Matthew, what do you think? Do you like my little gift?"That fire burned hot. I heard the

I said solemnly, "You say the video is fake, and that I bullied Seth, right? Then what about this?"I opened another folder. It contained something Seth had never imagined I'd kept, which was an even more damning recording. It was from three years ago, when Seth came to visit me in prison, convinced he'd already won. He'd told me everything himself. His voice in the recording was arrogant and savage."Matthew, you really think Sheryl and Isabella love you? Keep dreaming. In their eyes, you're nothing more than a tool they can use to take the fall for me. Once you're locked up, I'll make sure you're well taken care of. Especially those eyes of yours. They really piss me off. "I'll have someone gouge them out and kick them around like balls. Just rot in here. Everything that belongs to the Ingram family, as well as Isabella, will always be mine!"Everyone in the ballroom exclaimed in shock.Isabella stood frozen, too stunned to speak. Her wineglass slipped from her hand and shatt

Gabriel spat, "All three of you are all nothing but scumbags."He turned, standing in front of me while pointing at Seth, Isabella, and Sheryl.Gabriel berated, "Are you even human? I've seen women forced into prostitution, but I've never seen anyone force their own brother to take the blame for a crime and then have his eye gouged out. Never have I seen such a thing in my entire life!"Seth shouted furiously, "You're talking nonsense! Who the hell are you? You have no right to slander me! That video has to be fake! Matthew is jealous of me. He teamed up with some outsider to frame me!"Gabriel sneered, "Why would I bother framing trash like you?"Suddenly, someone in the crowd gasped. "I remember now! He's Gabriel Chapple!"A wealthy woman pointed at Gabriel, her face filled with horror. "He's that… that murderer from the notorious case that shocked the entire city! He killed his gambler father! He's a convicted murderer!"The moment those words were spoken, the entire hall gas

In the video, Seth sat curled up on a couch, reeking of alcohol, while Isabella stood beside him and spoke to me coldly."Have Matthew take the blame… Seth isn't in good health. He wouldn't survive a place like prison. You're stronger, and you've been through hardships before. Just endure it for a while, and it'll be over… If you confess and take the blame, I'll still marry you when you get out."The guests present cried out in shock and disbelief."Oh my God! So the drunk-driving accident was actually a cover-up?""That's disgusting! They forced the true heir to go to prison just to protect their adopted son!""And she said he was strong enough to handle it… She sent him to prison! What kind of monster says something like that?"Isabella stared at the giant screen in horror, her face deathly pale. She screamed at the staff nearby, "Turn it off! Turn it off right now! Who put this video on? Shut it down!" Seth was even more terrified. He bolted for the stage and tried to yank

The entire ballroom fell silent. Everyone's eyes were fixed in horror on the lone prosthetic eye lying at Sheryl's feet before slowly shifting to the empty socket on the left side of my face."Ah!" Someone screamed. The entire room gasped and started expressing their shock."Oh my goodness! Is that an eyeball?""His eye… He's blind in one eye?"Sheryl's entire body stiffened. She reached out with a trembling hand toward the prosthetic eye, only to jerk it back as though she'd been burned.Isabella's face went pale, and her voice nearly broke. "Where's your eye? Matthew, where's your eye?"Seth stood nearby, shouting in panic, "Matthew! Why did you take that disgusting thing out? Put it back in!""Shut up!" Sheryl suddenly shouted. She stared at my empty eye socket, and her pupils contracted violently. She remembered that before I'd gone to prison, I'd had a pair of charming, bright eyes."Who did this?" Her voice was cold, but there was a tremor beneath it.At that moment, a
