Chapter 4

작가: Tea Spiller
The people gathered by the entrance turned around all at once, their eyes falling on me.

Every single one of them froze.

Julian turned at the sound of my voice, the smirk on his lips extinguished.

“What are you doing here?”

He strode toward me with rapid, aggressive steps, his face dampening into a harsh glare.

“Emma, how could you come to the office without filing a prior report? What’s this nonsense?

“I’ve been far too lenient with you, a mistake on my part. You can forget your quarterly performance bonus.”

I didn’t offer a word in response. I simply handed him a stack of attendance sheets.

The divorce agreement was slipped right in between them.

Without so much as glancing at the pages, he scribbled his signature across them in a matter of seconds.

Only after I retrieved the document did I look at him with unbothered composure.

“Go ahead. Dock it.”

Under my unnervingly calm gaze, Julian felt a sudden tremor of unease, which instantly flared into indignant anger.

“It was nothing more than a joke between friends! Can’t you show a little bit of grace?

“Besides, you heard them—this kinda thing is standard practice in our circle.”

Before I could open my mouth, Hannah clutched at my sleeve, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“It’s all my fault, please don’t blame it on Mr. Ferguson. I was the one who jumped on him.”

I knitted my brows.

Why was the woman breaking into tears when I hadn’t said a single word to her?

“I just came to—”

Hannah dropped to her knees on the marble floor, letting out a dramatic sob:

“Please forgive him! I’m not after anything. I just wanna stay by his side. Please don’t fire me!”

The surrounding onlookers were filled with pity for her and utter disgust toward me.

I instinctively tried to yank my arm out of her grip.

Yet before I could exert any force, Hannah suddenly let out a sharp scream, rolling wildly down the steps and striking her head hard against the solid tile below.

Drops of dark blood dripped from her temple, running down toward her eye.

“Ah! My head!”

Curling into a ball while clutching her forehead, she gasped in agony:

“Julian… my face is ruined…”

Before I could process what had just happened, Julian shoved me aside with brutal force, roaring in my face:

“Emma, have you lost your mind?

“She was apologizing. Why would you do that?”

I stared at him in utter disbelief.

“Have you gone blind, or deaf?

“I hadn’t said or done a thing! It was the two of you who were screaming at me all along.”

Fury burst across Julian’s face.

“You crossed the line today. Your salary for the entire second half of the year is revoked.

“And I won’t be coming home. Spend time alone to do some self-reflection.”

With that, he scooped up Hannah from the floor and rushed her into his car.

The engine roared as the car sped off, disappearing in an instant.

I was left standing alone on the empty pavement.

The scrapes on my palms stung. The pain radiated along my nerves through my entire body, sending me trembling.

I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh.

Just now was the man I had insisted on marrying, disobeying my grandfather in doing so, and whose bizarre style of life I had given in to.

Well, it was for the best. Our unequal dynamic should have ended long ago.

I walked into the coffee shop right next door.

Daniel was already waiting there. The very first thing he noticed was the bleeding scrape on my hand.

His brows knitted at once as he called the server over to fetch some adhesive bandages.

Watching the man bending over to tend to my wound, I couldn’t help but let out a self-mocking scoff.

Grandpa, my judgment had never come close to matching yours.

As per corporate regulations, the man I married too had a three-year probation period in my heart.

Now, his performance had fallen tragically short of the standard.

It was only natural to end this chapter and move on to the next.

In truth, Julian had known in his heart of heart, that Hannah had staged the fall.

But I couldn’t be allowed to challenge his boundaries time and time again.

Rules once established could never be broken.

At the thought of this, he pressed his lips into a tight line and sent me a text:

“Have you realized your mistake?”

No reply came.

Three hours passed, and still there was no reply.

A sudden wave of panic washed over Julian as he sensed something was slipping away, out of his control.

Just then, a news headline suddenly flashed across his phone screen:

“Heir and Heiress Daniel Sinclair and Emma Miller to Betroth on March 18.”

“Online rumors regarding Ms. Miller attempting bigamy are untrue. Ms. Miller and I are legally divorced, and she committed no wrongdoing whatsoever from start to finish. On the contrary, I was the unfaithful one, having involved myself with Hannah Scott. I sincerely apologize for the widespread concern this matter has caused. This tarnishing of our corporate image is a complete failure of responsibility on my part.”Reading the statement, my fingers hovered over my phone screen for a few seconds.I never expected Julian to take all the blame upon himself.Shortly after, Grandpa had his legal team release my signed divorce agreement along with clear evidence of Julian’s infidelity, which completely contradicted the narrative Hannah had spun online. He let out a soft huff, turning to me:“Don’t you dare forgive him over that tiny show of chivalry. This mess was entirely of his own making, and it is only right that he bears the consequences himself.”I looked at him with an amused smile:

Julian’s face drained of all color, his panic escalating by the second.“There’s still time! As long as we aren’t divorced, as long as I don’t consent, you can’t leave me!“Emma, you can’t do this to me. I can sue you for bigamy!”As he tried to lunge forward again, Grandpa signaled for the bodyguards to step in.“It looks to me like you would prefer it the hard way.“I gave you a chance.”With a nod from my grandfather, the bodyguards’ fists rained down on Julian, one blow after another.“Emma refrains from laying a finger on you because she has a forgiving nature. That doesn’t make the Millers pushovers.“Bigamy? The divorce paper is signed. It just needs to be finalized in court now.”Julian spat out a mouthful of bloody foam.“I don’t mind it. Please, go ahead and hit me! I deserve it—I deserve every strike! As long as it quells your rage, I’ll do whatever you want!”Grandpa let out a scoff.“What I want is for you and Emma to end things once and for all, before she gets lynched by

Before the engagement party had even wrapped up, social media was already in an uproar.Refusing to accept defeat, Hannah had published a long exposé of me online.Writing as Julian’s executive assistant, she claimed to have had close contact with me, having helped Julian order gifts for me.She then claimed she could no longer bear to watch everyone be duped by my lies, and so had stepped forward to tell the truth, even if it meant spelling her own ruin.At the end of the post, she attached a collection of chat logs between herself and me, most of which contained my deep, heartfelt private confessions of my love for Julian. The post spread like wild fire across social platforms, instantly exploding into a viral sensation.Startled by the swarm of microphones thrust in front of my face, I froze in shock.“Ms. Miller, are you the person Ms. Scott described in her post? Are you about to commit bigamy?”“Since you’re already married to Julian Ferguson, why are you tying the knot with Mr.

“I let you use my phone to message Emma time and time again.“But why didn’t you tell me she was coming to the office that day? You know better than anyone that I maintain strict boundaries. My work and private life are two entirely separate entities, just as your role and Emma’s are distinct. You crossed the line this time.“Hannah, we’re done.”With that, Julian turned and bolted straight for the exit.He hurried all the way back to our house. Yet when he pushed the door open, every single item that belonged to me had vanished.Gone.Not a trace left.He felt his heart sinking into a dark abyss. Panicking, he rushed back outside with only one thought on his mind—find Emma.I couldn’t be marrying another man. How could I?Getting into his car, Julian stepped on the accelerator, speeding all the way to the Miller residence. He had no desire to question why I had never told him about my true background. All he cared now was to stop what was happening, and all his hope was desperately p

Upon returning to the house, I packed my luggage in short order.Despite having lived with Julian for three full years, remarkably little truly belonged to me.It seemed I had squandered all my time on him.I hadn’t even bought clothes I actually liked. The garments hanging in the wardrobe were nothing more than disguises put on to play the part of his wife.On my way out, I cast one last look over my shoulder. We had chosen this house together. Every square inch of flooring, every piece of furniture, all the interior design had been personally handled by me. I learned from tutorials online before hiring the contractors for execution. And now, this place no longer served any purpose.I flagged down a cab and headed straight to my studio. My best friend, Piper, came from money and had invested in a private jewelry design studio.Seeing that I had a natural gift for jewelry, she had handed the operations off to me entirely.Over the past three years, our studio had built a respectable re

Julian shivered violently, his fingers trembling uncontrollably as he tapped on the news alert. There was no photo attached.Only an identical name.It couldn’t be me.A woman who relied on him for a pitiful living allowance could never be some wealthy heiress. He let out a sigh of relief, yet the tension in his chest remained tight as a bowstring. After wrecking his mind over it, he couldn’t stop himself from sending a few more texts:“Emma, where are you?“Be good now, go home and wait for me. Once Hannah’s clear, I’ll head back.”I still offered no reply.I gazed out the car window as beams of streetlight flashed past one after another, a desolate void claiming my heart.Soothing music played through the car speakers, its gentle calm lulling me into slumber. When I opened my eyes again, we had pulled up to the entrance of the estate.Daniel’s low, mellow voice broke the quiet.“Grandpa wants to see you.“Let’s pay him a visit together tomorrow.”I didn’t shake my head.Toward any ab
