Chapter 5

Author: Fifth Petal
Before leaving, Wesley made one more trip to campus.

He needed to pack up his things, say goodbye to the friends who'd truly stood by him, and gather the materials for his video.

A send-off ceremony for the graduating class was underway on the athletic field.

As the department's outstanding graduates—and the only two recommended recipients—Derek and Natalie took the stage to speak.

Derek wore a white shirt with a silver pin at the collar.

It was identical to the one Wesley had tucked away at the back of a drawer.

He remembered Natalie giving him that pin and telling him, so earnestly, that she'd had it custom-made just for him. She'd designed it herself. There wasn't another one like it in the world.

So he'd never been one of a kind after all.

Wesley headed for the lab building without looking back, but Derek's words stopped him in his tracks.

"There's one special person I want to thank.

"Natalie Rowan.

"For four years, I was broke, insecure, and alone, and you pulled me out of the dark more times than I can count.

"You tutored me. You fought to get me a work-study position. When my family was in the hospital, you covered the medical bills. When I thought I had no chance to be recommended, you did everything you could to make it happen.

"Without you, I wouldn't be standing here today.

"Will you be my girlfriend?"

Wesley stopped.

He thought of Natalie yesterday, smiling as she promised, "You're the one I've always known I'd spend my life with."

Then he heard her say, "Yes."

Wesley kept walking.

At the lab door, he froze.

His computer had been smashed. His notes were soaking in water. Someone had splashed red paint across his workstation and scrawled BULLY in huge, ugly letters.

The crystal keepsake his grandmother had left him lay shattered on the floor.

Wesley rushed over and gathered up the pieces. He knelt helplessly in the wreckage, tears falling, trying to fit the crystal back together.

Someone grabbed him by the hair from behind and dragged him toward the door.

"You've got some nerve showing your face here! If Derek hadn't exposed you, none of us would've known you were such a two-faced piece of trash!

"The graduation ceremony's still going. You're going to apologize to Derek in front of everyone!"

Wesley barely managed to clutch the crystal to his chest before he was dragged toward the field.

His back was scraped raw. The pain nearly made him black out.

People passing by pointed at him. Some even threw rocks and spat at him.

A rock split Wesley's forehead open. Through the blood, he saw Natalie and Derek walking toward him side by side.

She stopped in front of him, her gaze cold and haughty.

"Yesterday, right in front of my dad, you said you'd marry me." Wesley's voice was hoarse, his mouth tasting of blood. "So what's this today?"

Natalie was calm. "Call it figuring out what I really want. Derek and I will be in the same grad program. If we're together, we can help each other, academically and professionally.

"Wesley, I really do like you, but your reputation's ruined. Your life's a mess. I can't see a future for you.

"People have to look out for themselves, don't they?

"So from now on, stay out of Derek's and my life. And you don't need to post that video, either. Derek's work will speak for itself."

Then she turned to the crowd with a sweet smile.

"Okay, everyone, thank you for standing up for my Derek, but that's enough. I don't want anyone getting in trouble because of us."

The crowd finally backed off.

Wesley limped away.

He fell seriously ill and couldn't get out of bed for a week.

Richard and Laura looked at their son, who'd lost so much weight, their hearts aching.

"The immigration paperwork's done. We can leave anytime. Is there anything else you want to do first?"

"Dad," Wesley said, "our company does security systems. Every surveillance feed in the city is backed up in our core database, right?

"I need some of that footage. I want it released along with my video after we're gone."

With everything arranged, Wesley boarded the plane.

Before takeoff, a message came in from Natalie.

"Dinner tonight. You have to come. Even if we didn't end up together, I don't want to lose my best friend."

After reading it, Wesley canceled his phone number and deleted all his social media accounts.

He was going to get as far away from Natalie, Derek, and the whole mess as he could. He had his own life to live.

The stab didn't kill Derek, but it left him unable to have children.Natalie was convicted of aggravated assault causing serious injury.Because of her prior record, she got a harsher sentence: seven years. In those seven years, no one from her family ever came to see her.Only Derek came, once a year, every visit full of resentment and curses."Natalie, I'll never have a son to carry on the family name. That's all thanks to you."My father's cheating now. The doctors said I can't be fixed, so he's trying to make himself a new heir."You'd better stay in there as long as you can. When you get out, I'll pick you up. You'll still be my wife. We'll just torture each other for the rest of our lives."Natalie never answered. She'd hang up the receiver, turn, and walk back to her cell, a little calmer each time. The day she was released, the sky was gray.Natalie carried only one personal item, the one thing that had gotten her through those seven years: a faded photo of a young W

After the wedding, Natalie lived entirely on Derek's charity. To avoid any legal trouble down the road, Derek never legally married her. He didn't give a cent to the woman who was his wife in name only. He found her a do-nothing job handling paperwork that paid just enough to cover her expenses.Derek cheated openly and never bothered to hide it.New interns at the company, the girl at the front desk—he switched every few days.Once, when Natalie brought documents to his office, she opened the door and found him and a girl wrapped around each other in his office chair. The girl apologized in a panic. Derek didn't, unhurriedly buttoning his shirt."Knock before you come in next time," he said without looking up. "If you can't manage that, get out of the company."Natalie set the documents on his desk, turned, walked out, and closed the door.Around the corner, she wiped away her tears, took out her phone, and started texting Wesley again. She'd gotten someone to track down his

The flight back to Bayhurst wasn't long, but Emma slept through almost all of it.When she woke, there was a blanket over her.She didn't ask, and Wesley didn't say. They sat side by side, both their hands resting on the armrest between them, inches apart, but neither of them ever crossed that invisible line.Grad school in Bayhurst meant a heavy lab workload, but word of what had happened back home still got out, thanks to some loose lips.On Friday, after the group meeting broke up, Mason Yates—another grad student who'd come over from back home—sidled up to Wesley with a grin."Hey, Wesley, I heard you were pretty famous back home. Your childhood sweetheart stole your data, you lost your recommendation, and you even did time in a holding cell. Is that true?"His voice wasn't loud, but the lab was quiet, and several pairs of eyes turned their way.Wesley kept packing up his laptop without looking up. "It's true."Mason perked up, and his voice rose."I knew it. It's all ove

Wesley went to the warehouse at the address Natalie had given him.Emma was gagged and tied to a chair. All she could do was look at him with frantic eyes."What do you want?" Wesley looked at Natalie, distant and on guard.Natalie was choking back sobs, her voice almost unrecognizably hoarse."I want you to listen to me. Hear me out. Just this once. One last time."Stealing your data was wrong. Deleting your evidence was wrong. You called me from the police station, begging me to help you be there for your grandmother's funeral, and I said yes, then turned around and went to dinner with Derek. That was wrong too. When they splashed red paint on you and dragged you by your hair, I stood right there and did nothing. I own every single one of those things."But Wesley, eighteen years—from age three to twenty-one—you're everywhere in my life. When I had a temper, you gave in. When I was unreasonable, you talked me down. When I made a mess, you cleaned it up. I didn't understand back

"Make the woman next to Wesley disappear."Charles hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded. As long as it brought the company back from the dead, he'd do anything. He stepped out to make a few calls, then came back and told Natalie, "I found out who she is. The girl's name is Emma Rhodes. Nothing in her background stands out. She's back here on school business for two weeks. I'll find a chance to make my move."After the engagement party, Natalie started living a different way. When Derek tore up his graduate admission letter, she smiled and tossed hers into the fire, saying she'd support him no matter what he did. When Derek got drunk, she made him something for the hangover. When he couldn't close a deal, she went to the business dinners and smiled through them for him.In public, she held Derek's arm, her smile flawless.Only she knew that every night, she hid in the bathroom and texted Wesley from her old phone from high school."Wesley, I drank too much. Before Wesley could open his mouth, Emma stepped in front of him."You destroyed his future, drove him out of the country, and made it so his grandmother couldn't even die in peace. How do you have the nerve to come begging to get back together?"You chose Derek, didn't you? When you were stealing Wesley's data for a liar like Derek, why didn't you think about today?"Natalie, you're apologizing in public because you can't hold it together anymore."You're crying because you just realized that of these two men, one's never coming back, and the other only lied his way into getting you."This whole scene is just you hoping they'll both feel sorry for you at the same time. You want Wesley to say 'forget it,' and you want Derek to say 'Nat, you're my fiancée,' so you can go back to being the girl two men fight to protect."A woman like you doesn't have a sincere bone in her body. It's all calculation."Natalie's lips trembled. Her usually composed face fell apart completely. She tu
