Chapter 4

Author: Fifth Petal
Wesley signed it without even looking.

Derek withdrew the complaint without hesitation.

The next day was his grandmother's funeral.

Wesley shoveled in the last of the earth, then knelt with his forehead against the headstone, begging her to forgive him.

Suddenly, there was a commotion outside the cemetery.

"Wesley North, the plagiarist, belongs in jail!"

"You bullied a poor student for four years! Why don't you just die?"

"You drove your own grandmother to her death! You should've been buried right next to her!"

Wesley was shocked and furious. "What are you talking about?"

Someone held up a phone. "You signed it yourself! You admitted you bullied Derek Sloan all through college and that he did all your research for you. It's in black and white. You still want to deny it?"

Wesley thought of the paper he hadn't bothered to read.

He scrambled for his phone.

Derek had posted a scan of the document publicly.

It wasn't a withdrawal at all. The title on the cover page read: "Statement of Facts Regarding My Bullying of and Unfair Competition Against Derek Sloan, by Wesley North." And he had signed it.

The crowd swarmed toward Evelyn's grave. They crushed the wreaths, trampled the flowers, and surrounded the North family.

"Anyone who raised trash like Wesley North can't be any better."

"Your whole family should just drop dead right here in the cemetery. Do the world a favor and don't pass on those rotten genes."

Wesley's father, Richard, had just lost his mother and already had a weak heart. He clutched his chest, collapsed, and gasped for air.

His mother, Laura, was knocked to the ground. Her ankle swelled badly above her high heel.

Wesley's heart was breaking.

He called the police, then held up his phone, photographing everyone, and screamed, "If anything happens to my family, I'll drag every one of you to hell with me, even if it kills me!"

Wild-eyed, he swung the knife from the memorial reception table. Afraid he'd truly snapped, the crowd scattered.

By the time Wesley had taken his mother home and checked his father into the hospital, it was late at night.

Exhausted, he lay on a cot in the hospital hallway, scrolling through his phone.

Public opinion wasn't completely one-sided. Plenty of his old classmates had organized on their own to speak up for him, and his thesis supervisor had recorded a video publicly supporting him.

Footsteps came from the far end of the hallway.

Natalie had arrived carrying a fruit basket. She went to see Richard first.

Richard took her hand, eyes red. "Nat, you have to speak up for Wesley. You two grew up together. You know what kind of person he is. How could he ever bully anyone or steal their work?"

Natalie was silent for a moment before she spoke.

"Mr. North, some people online are saying Wesley's innocent and that Derek set the whole thing up.

"That's really hurting Derek.

"I came because I'm hoping you can convince Wesley to come forward publicly, admit what he did these past four years, and shut down the people claiming Derek's lying."

Wesley held back his rage.

"Get out."

Natalie stayed perfectly calm.

"Wesley, we grew up together. Eighteen years. You're the one I've always known I'd spend my life with. Help Derek one last time, and as soon as we graduate next month, we'll get married."

She added, "It was your grandmother's last wish too."

It felt like a knife twisting in Wesley's heart.

He looked at her earnest face and listened to her weigh the pros and cons, and his heart sank like a stone.

He gave a bleak smile.

"Fine. I'll post a video to clear things up. Go home and wait."

After Natalie left, Richard forced himself to sit up, looking at his son with worry.

"You're really going to post a video? That'll destroy your reputation! I know you love Natalie, but you can't throw away your principles for her!"

"I said I'd post a video to set the record straight," Wesley said. "I never promised Natalie I'd set it straight for Derek.

"And Dad, I got an offer for grad school overseas. Most of our business has been overseas for years now. If it weren't for Grandma, you and Mom would've emigrated a long time ago.

"Grandma's gone now. It's time for us to leave."

The stab didn't kill Derek, but it left him unable to have children.Natalie was convicted of aggravated assault causing serious injury.Because of her prior record, she got a harsher sentence: seven years. In those seven years, no one from her family ever came to see her.Only Derek came, once a year, every visit full of resentment and curses."Natalie, I'll never have a son to carry on the family name. That's all thanks to you."My father's cheating now. The doctors said I can't be fixed, so he's trying to make himself a new heir."You'd better stay in there as long as you can. When you get out, I'll pick you up. You'll still be my wife. We'll just torture each other for the rest of our lives."Natalie never answered. She'd hang up the receiver, turn, and walk back to her cell, a little calmer each time. The day she was released, the sky was gray.Natalie carried only one personal item, the one thing that had gotten her through those seven years: a faded photo of a young W

After the wedding, Natalie lived entirely on Derek's charity. To avoid any legal trouble down the road, Derek never legally married her. He didn't give a cent to the woman who was his wife in name only. He found her a do-nothing job handling paperwork that paid just enough to cover her expenses.Derek cheated openly and never bothered to hide it.New interns at the company, the girl at the front desk—he switched every few days.Once, when Natalie brought documents to his office, she opened the door and found him and a girl wrapped around each other in his office chair. The girl apologized in a panic. Derek didn't, unhurriedly buttoning his shirt."Knock before you come in next time," he said without looking up. "If you can't manage that, get out of the company."Natalie set the documents on his desk, turned, walked out, and closed the door.Around the corner, she wiped away her tears, took out her phone, and started texting Wesley again. She'd gotten someone to track down his

The flight back to Bayhurst wasn't long, but Emma slept through almost all of it.When she woke, there was a blanket over her.She didn't ask, and Wesley didn't say. They sat side by side, both their hands resting on the armrest between them, inches apart, but neither of them ever crossed that invisible line.Grad school in Bayhurst meant a heavy lab workload, but word of what had happened back home still got out, thanks to some loose lips.On Friday, after the group meeting broke up, Mason Yates—another grad student who'd come over from back home—sidled up to Wesley with a grin."Hey, Wesley, I heard you were pretty famous back home. Your childhood sweetheart stole your data, you lost your recommendation, and you even did time in a holding cell. Is that true?"His voice wasn't loud, but the lab was quiet, and several pairs of eyes turned their way.Wesley kept packing up his laptop without looking up. "It's true."Mason perked up, and his voice rose."I knew it. It's all ove

Wesley went to the warehouse at the address Natalie had given him.Emma was gagged and tied to a chair. All she could do was look at him with frantic eyes."What do you want?" Wesley looked at Natalie, distant and on guard.Natalie was choking back sobs, her voice almost unrecognizably hoarse."I want you to listen to me. Hear me out. Just this once. One last time."Stealing your data was wrong. Deleting your evidence was wrong. You called me from the police station, begging me to help you be there for your grandmother's funeral, and I said yes, then turned around and went to dinner with Derek. That was wrong too. When they splashed red paint on you and dragged you by your hair, I stood right there and did nothing. I own every single one of those things."But Wesley, eighteen years—from age three to twenty-one—you're everywhere in my life. When I had a temper, you gave in. When I was unreasonable, you talked me down. When I made a mess, you cleaned it up. I didn't understand back

"Make the woman next to Wesley disappear."Charles hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded. As long as it brought the company back from the dead, he'd do anything. He stepped out to make a few calls, then came back and told Natalie, "I found out who she is. The girl's name is Emma Rhodes. Nothing in her background stands out. She's back here on school business for two weeks. I'll find a chance to make my move."After the engagement party, Natalie started living a different way. When Derek tore up his graduate admission letter, she smiled and tossed hers into the fire, saying she'd support him no matter what he did. When Derek got drunk, she made him something for the hangover. When he couldn't close a deal, she went to the business dinners and smiled through them for him.In public, she held Derek's arm, her smile flawless.Only she knew that every night, she hid in the bathroom and texted Wesley from her old phone from high school."Wesley, I drank too much. I feel awful. Do

Before Wesley could open his mouth, Emma stepped in front of him."You destroyed his future, drove him out of the country, and made it so his grandmother couldn't even die in peace. How do you have the nerve to come begging to get back together?"You chose Derek, didn't you? When you were stealing Wesley's data for a liar like Derek, why didn't you think about today?"Natalie, you're apologizing in public because you can't hold it together anymore."You're crying because you just realized that of these two men, one's never coming back, and the other only lied his way into getting you."This whole scene is just you hoping they'll both feel sorry for you at the same time. You want Wesley to say 'forget it,' and you want Derek to say 'Nat, you're my fiancée,' so you can go back to being the girl two men fight to protect."A woman like you doesn't have a sincere bone in her body. It's all calculation."Natalie's lips trembled. Her usually composed face fell apart completely. She tu
