Chapter 3

Author: Fifteen
I pushed the door open and went straight to the bedroom, where I pulled my suitcase out of the closet.

Logan followed me in, his expression darkening.

"Keira, what's your problem now?"

"I'm moving out," I said, tossing my clothes into the suitcase one by one.

"Over a parking spot?"

I didn't stop packing, but he grabbed the suitcase.

"Why didn't you talk to me before you sold the spot?" he asked, his voice rising with frustration.

"It was my parking spot." I looked at him. "Why did I need to discuss it with you?"

Rendered speechless, Logan looked as if he'd swallowed a lemon.

"We're getting married soon," he finally said. "Do you really have to make such a big deal about what's yours and what's mine?"

"Did you buy the parking spot?" I asked, staring at him.

"I did. So what?" His answer came without hesitation. "You'd already decided to sell it. I wasn't going to let someone else buy it. Genevieve has trouble parking, so keeping the spot between ours made the most sense."

"Made the most sense?" I echoed. "For who?"

Logan's patience finally ran out.

"Stop overthinking this!" he snapped. "It's just a parking spot. I'll buy you another one if that's what you want."

Somehow, he made it sound like I was the petty one for being upset.

"Logan, forget the wedding." I looked at him with a sneer as I zipped up my suitcase. "I don't want to marry you anymore."

The moment the words left my mouth, Logan's expression turned grim.

"The wedding is in two weeks, and you're telling me this now?"

Genevieve appeared in the doorway, her gaze tearful.

"Keira, don't do this. This is all my fault."

I turned toward her.

"If it's your fault, then do you even know what you did wrong?"

The color drained from her face.

"If you walk out of that door tonight, we're not going to be able to talk this through," Logan warned, his voice turning cold as he blocked the doorway.

I ignored him and looked at my phone instead.

The screen showed an email from the overseas division.

"Overseas Assignment Confirmation: Please confirm whether you accept the position by the end of this week."

In truth, I'd been staring at that email for three days. I'd been torn about whether to accept it, but now, I'd made up my mind.

With both of them watching, I clicked on the email and typed, "I accept."

The moment I hit send, Mom called.

"Keira, have you lost your mind?" she cried. "You're making this much of a fuss over a parking lot? Your wedding's just around the corner. Imagine what our family and friends would say!"

Dad took the phone next.

"Keira, enough. Stop making a scene. You're getting married soon. You can't be this unreasonable."

They hadn't even asked why I was leaving, but they had already decided that I was in the wrong. Apparently, I wasn't allowed to embarrass our families.

I hung up.

…

Not long after the altercation, the doorbell rang.

Genevieve was standing outside with a thermal bag.

"Keira, I made you soup."

I didn't let her in.

"Just get to the point."

She lowered her head, tears welling in her eyes.

"Why do you have to end things with Logan? If this is about the parking spot, I'll stop parking there. Is that what you want? You can have the spot."

I almost laughed.

"Have it? It was mine to begin with."

She faltered, then plastered a smile on her face.

"We've been friends for so many years. We don't have to let something this trivial come between us."

"Then, why did you let Logan buy it?" I demanded.

"I never asked him to buy it," Genevieve cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. "He just felt bad for me. You know I'm a terrible driver. You've always been understanding about it."

I nodded.

"So, I was supposed to tolerate you taking my fiance away from me, too?"

She fell silent, and I looked her in the eye.

"All these years, were you really taking over my parking spot because you were a bad driver, or were you trying to make some kind of point?"

The hurt expression on her face finally cracked.

"Do you really have to make it sound so awful?"

"What exactly is awful?" I shot back. "Are you referring to my words or what you did?"

Genevieve wiped away her tears, finally giving up on her facade.

"I never meant to take anything from you," she said. "Logan and I work at the same company, and we just happen to be on the same route."

The last thread of my patience snapped.

"Right. You always have an explanation," I said, a sneer tugging at my lips. "Whether it was coincidental or intentional, you know the truth."

She had nothing to say. Before leaving, she set the thermal bag on the floor and gave me one last look.

"Keira, you'll regret this."

"I do regret something," I said before closing the door. "I regret not seeing the truth sooner."

…

The next morning at work, I overheard people talking in the break room about a business meeting.

"I heard we're going to Crestmont today."

"I was in the parking garage last time. Mr. Poole was always parked next to one of the female employees' cars."

"You mean Genevieve? They're always getting coffee together at work, too. Wait, isn't Logan Poole Keira's fiance?"

Several people turned to look at me, but I said nothing.

Just then, my manager, Sean Goldwin, came out of his office.

"Keira, head to Crestmont this afternoon and finalize the details for the new project."

"Got it," I said.

At that moment, I suddenly found the whole thing almost laughable.

Even the people around me had noticed the signs before I did, but I'd been the only one foolish enough to miss them.

Once I returned to Norvia, my life finally settled into a comfortable rhythm.I had a steady work schedule, a place of my own, and a parking spot that belonged to me.Every day after work, I'd drive home and park in my own space. On weekends when the weather was nice, I'd stop by the florist's and pick up a bouquet. On rainy days, I'd curl up on the couch and watch a movie.Sometimes, my coworkers invited me out for dinner. Other times, I'd drive to a nearby town and wander around the grocery store on my own.My life wasn't particularly exciting, but it was steady.…One evening, I came home from work and parked in the garage, but I didn't get out right away. The garage was quiet, the overhead lights casting a pale glow across the gray wall in front of me.I suddenly found myself thinking about the past. I thought about all those times I'd driven home, only to find myself unable to pull into my own parking space.I remembered Genevieve's car parked crookedly across the spot. I

A year later, I returned to Averon briefly for work. The weather was beautiful when I landed. As I walked out of the airport with my suitcase, a driver was already waiting for me.Riverton looked almost exactly as I remembered it. The roads and buildings didn't change at all.I spent three busy days handling the handover, and once everything was settled, I went to see my parents.Mom froze for a second when she opened the door, then immediately reached for my suitcase."Why have you lost so much weight?" she cried. "Are you not used to the food over there?"I changed out of my shoes and stepped inside."Work's been busy," I simply said.Neither Dad nor Mom mentioned Logan during dinner.Mom only asked whether I was settling in well, whether work was exhausting, and whether I'd made any new friends. Dad ate quietly beside her, occasionally reminding me not to stay up so late. After dinner, Dad pushed a folder across the table."These are the expenses Logan reimbursed after th

By the time Norvia's second rainy season came around, I'd gotten used to handling things on my own. When I got a flat tire, I'd call roadside assistance myself. When a pipe in my apartment started leaking, I emailed the property manager and scheduled a repair. If I worked late, I'd call a cab home. On weekends, when I had time, I'd drive out to the supermarket and stock up on everything I needed for the week.I'd always thought living alone would be exhausting. But eventually, I realized that living alone had never been what wore me down. What exhausted me was being completely drained and still having to make excuses for someone else's behavior.…It was pouring one evening. I stopped at a red light, my windshield wipers sweeping back and forth as warm air filled the car. For some reason, I suddenly remembered that stormy night back in Averon. I'd parked nearly a mile from home and walked the rest of the way with my bag clutched against me, water soaking through my shoes. I mu

More than a month after the wedding fiasco, Logan went to my parents' house. Mom was the one who told me about it. I'd just finished a cross-country conference call that day, and my throat was painfully hoarse. Mom called, first asking whether I'd eaten before finally telling me Logan came by today. The pen in my hand stopped. "What did he want?""To apologize."She told me he'd shown up carrying several bags of things and stood outside for a long time. Dad hadn't wanted to open the door at first but eventually let him in. Once Logan sat down, he admitted he shouldn't have bought the parking spot behind my back. He also admitted that things had gone too far between him and Genevieve. Mom paused before adding, "He also said he'd had too much to drink the night before the wedding, and that's how things ended up happening."I laughed."Of course that's what he'd say."If I hadn't walked away, he never would have thought there was anything wrong. Every time things went wr

Life in a foreign country was much simpler. My days followed the same routine—work, home, and back again. Leaving my apartment at 7:00 am every day and returning around 10:00 pm soon became the norm. Some nights, I was so exhausted that I didn't even feel like turning on the lights when I walked through the door. But at least this kind of exhaustion was bearable. It came from work, not from constantly having to deal with people who drained me. I settled into my new life quickly. There was a convenience store downstairs and a little coffee shop around the corner. On weekends, I'd go to the supermarket and stock up on everything I needed for the week, filling my fridge with all the food I liked. There were only my shoes by the front door. Only my things filled the bathroom cabinet. I'd always thought living alone would feel lonely. But now, I realized it meant no one could force their way into my life anymore. I still heard bits and pieces of what was happening back home

  • I'm Done Squeezing Into Their Love Lane   Chapter 5

When I landed, dawn was just breaking over Norvia. A thin layer of fog hung outside the airport, and the early morning light was still faint. I stood outside the terminal with my suitcase, my phone still switched off. For the first time in days, there were no calls, no messages, and no one trying to reach me. I didn't turn my phone back on until that afternoon. The moment the screen lit up, the notifications came flooding in. There were dozens of missed calls from my parents, hundreds of messages from Logan, and so many screenshots and voice messages from mutual friends that my WhatsApp was practically unusable. At the top was a video from the wedding. I opened it. Logan stood on the stage, his boutonniere slightly crooked and his face dark with anger. The officiant held the microphone, barely managing to keep a smile on his face, while the murmuring from the guests grew impossible to ignore.Genevieve stood beside Logan in a pale-colored dress. She wasn't dressed like a
