Chapter 4

Author: Fifteen
At 3:00 pm that day, I arrived at Crestmont with the project materials.

I'd barely finished checking in at the front desk when I heard laughter drifting over from the break room. I looked up and saw Logan and Genevieve walking out side by side, each holding a cup of coffee.

Someone nearby teased, "Mr. Poole, buying Ms. Sachs coffee again?"

"He insisted." Genevieve laughed. "What was I supposed to do?"

Logan didn't deny it. But the moment he looked up and saw me, the smile on his face froze.

I simply took my visitor badge and walked straight past them without a word.

The meeting lasted an hour, and I remained calm the entire time. Logan glanced at me several times, but I never once met his eyes.

When the meeting ended, I closed my laptop and strode right out. As I left the conference room, Logan caught up with me and followed me into the elevator.

"What was that about?"

"I'm just here to work."

"You saw me and Genevieve. Why didn't you ask?"

I turned to him.

"If I had, would you have told me the truth?"

He couldn't answer. But even after we stepped out of the elevator, he still trailed after me.

"The wedding is only two weeks away," he said in a low voice. "Making a scene now isn't going to help either of us."

"What you really care about is whether the wedding is going to be canceled, isn't it?" I asked calmly, despite the anger in his eyes.

He went silent for a few seconds.

"I admit I've gotten closer to Genevieve lately," he said, finally relenting. "But we're just coworkers. She relies on me more than most people, and I can't exactly make her uncomfortable."

I didn't have it in me to feel that pain all over again. I simply understood now.

"You worry about making her uncomfortable, but what about me?

"When I couldn't even get my car into my own parking spot, you told me not to make things difficult for her. When I felt like a stranger in my own home, you told me not to overthink it. When I sold something that belonged to me just to get some peace and quiet, you turned around and bought it for her."

"Logan, don't you think you're being incredibly hypocritical?"

His jaw tightened.

"I'll be more careful from now on," he said after a long silence. "I'll drive you home tonight, and we'll talk things through."

"Don't bother," I rejected his offer and walked away. "There's nothing left to talk about.

…

After that, Logan started messaging me constantly.

"Have you eaten?"

"Let's go look at wedding dresses this week."

"The wedding planner needs us to finalize the schedule. Are you free tonight?"

I muted the conversation.

14 days remained until the wedding, and my overseas assignment was set to begin on that exact same day.

I turned the calendar to that date, a heaviness settling in my chest. It was supposed to be the day I had looked forward to more than anything, but now, it was simply the day I would leave.

Over the next few days, I tied up every loose end. I had someone retrieve the documents and belongings I'd left at Logan's place.

Meanwhile, in our group chat, Logan continued making arrangements as though nothing had happened.

"Keira's been busy lately. How about Genevieve help with the final wedding dress fitting?"

"Sure!" Genevieve replied almost instantly. "I have great taste. I'll make sure she loves it."

I stared at the screen. For some reason, I didn't want to leave the group chat anymore. I wanted to see just how much more of my life they were going to arrange without me.

…

The night before I left, Logan sent me a long string of messages.

"I'll be downstairs at 7:00 am tomorrow to pick you up."

"Leave the rest to me."

"As long as you stop being so sensitive, we can have a good life together."

I didn't reply to a single one.

…

On the morning of the wedding, Logan arrived downstairs dressed in his tuxedo.

By then, I was already on my way to the airport. My phone kept buzzing, but I ignored every call.

Later, the realtor told me that Logan had rushed upstairs and pounded on my door for a long time. Eventually, he'd even kicked it until security intervened.

All that remained inside was an empty table with a note I'd left for him.

It contained only one sentence.

"Logan, we're completely over."

Not long after, he sent me one final message.

"If you don't show up today, I'll have Genevieve take your place."

I stared at the words, realizing I didn't feel a thing anymore.

My parents called over and over, and Mom told me all our relatives had already arrived.

I ignored them.

Logan kept sending frantic messages, asking if I'd lost my mind.

I silenced my phone and glanced at the departure gate. As the boarding announcement began, I turned off my phone, slipped it into my bag, and blocked every number.

I walked through the gate without looking back.

Once I returned to Norvia, my life finally settled into a comfortable rhythm.I had a steady work schedule, a place of my own, and a parking spot that belonged to me.Every day after work, I'd drive home and park in my own space. On weekends when the weather was nice, I'd stop by the florist's and pick up a bouquet. On rainy days, I'd curl up on the couch and watch a movie.Sometimes, my coworkers invited me out for dinner. Other times, I'd drive to a nearby town and wander around the grocery store on my own.My life wasn't particularly exciting, but it was steady.…One evening, I came home from work and parked in the garage, but I didn't get out right away. The garage was quiet, the overhead lights casting a pale glow across the gray wall in front of me.I suddenly found myself thinking about the past. I thought about all those times I'd driven home, only to find myself unable to pull into my own parking space.I remembered Genevieve's car parked crookedly across the spot. I

A year later, I returned to Averon briefly for work. The weather was beautiful when I landed. As I walked out of the airport with my suitcase, a driver was already waiting for me.Riverton looked almost exactly as I remembered it. The roads and buildings didn't change at all.I spent three busy days handling the handover, and once everything was settled, I went to see my parents.Mom froze for a second when she opened the door, then immediately reached for my suitcase."Why have you lost so much weight?" she cried. "Are you not used to the food over there?"I changed out of my shoes and stepped inside."Work's been busy," I simply said.Neither Dad nor Mom mentioned Logan during dinner.Mom only asked whether I was settling in well, whether work was exhausting, and whether I'd made any new friends. Dad ate quietly beside her, occasionally reminding me not to stay up so late. After dinner, Dad pushed a folder across the table."These are the expenses Logan reimbursed after th

By the time Norvia's second rainy season came around, I'd gotten used to handling things on my own. When I got a flat tire, I'd call roadside assistance myself. When a pipe in my apartment started leaking, I emailed the property manager and scheduled a repair. If I worked late, I'd call a cab home. On weekends, when I had time, I'd drive out to the supermarket and stock up on everything I needed for the week.I'd always thought living alone would be exhausting. But eventually, I realized that living alone had never been what wore me down. What exhausted me was being completely drained and still having to make excuses for someone else's behavior.…It was pouring one evening. I stopped at a red light, my windshield wipers sweeping back and forth as warm air filled the car. For some reason, I suddenly remembered that stormy night back in Averon. I'd parked nearly a mile from home and walked the rest of the way with my bag clutched against me, water soaking through my shoes. I mu

More than a month after the wedding fiasco, Logan went to my parents' house. Mom was the one who told me about it. I'd just finished a cross-country conference call that day, and my throat was painfully hoarse. Mom called, first asking whether I'd eaten before finally telling me Logan came by today. The pen in my hand stopped. "What did he want?""To apologize."She told me he'd shown up carrying several bags of things and stood outside for a long time. Dad hadn't wanted to open the door at first but eventually let him in. Once Logan sat down, he admitted he shouldn't have bought the parking spot behind my back. He also admitted that things had gone too far between him and Genevieve. Mom paused before adding, "He also said he'd had too much to drink the night before the wedding, and that's how things ended up happening."I laughed."Of course that's what he'd say."If I hadn't walked away, he never would have thought there was anything wrong. Every time things went wr

Life in a foreign country was much simpler. My days followed the same routine—work, home, and back again. Leaving my apartment at 7:00 am every day and returning around 10:00 pm soon became the norm. Some nights, I was so exhausted that I didn't even feel like turning on the lights when I walked through the door. But at least this kind of exhaustion was bearable. It came from work, not from constantly having to deal with people who drained me. I settled into my new life quickly. There was a convenience store downstairs and a little coffee shop around the corner. On weekends, I'd go to the supermarket and stock up on everything I needed for the week, filling my fridge with all the food I liked. There were only my shoes by the front door. Only my things filled the bathroom cabinet. I'd always thought living alone would feel lonely. But now, I realized it meant no one could force their way into my life anymore. I still heard bits and pieces of what was happening back home

  • I'm Done Squeezing Into Their Love Lane   Chapter 5

When I landed, dawn was just breaking over Norvia. A thin layer of fog hung outside the airport, and the early morning light was still faint. I stood outside the terminal with my suitcase, my phone still switched off. For the first time in days, there were no calls, no messages, and no one trying to reach me. I didn't turn my phone back on until that afternoon. The moment the screen lit up, the notifications came flooding in. There were dozens of missed calls from my parents, hundreds of messages from Logan, and so many screenshots and voice messages from mutual friends that my WhatsApp was practically unusable. At the top was a video from the wedding. I opened it. Logan stood on the stage, his boutonniere slightly crooked and his face dark with anger. The officiant held the microphone, barely managing to keep a smile on his face, while the murmuring from the guests grew impossible to ignore.Genevieve stood beside Logan in a pale-colored dress. She wasn't dressed like a
