Penulis: The Handsome Guy

Chapter 1

Penulis: The Handsome Guy
When I came out, dinner was already drawing to a close.

Mom placed a glazed barbecue rib on my brother, Mason Young's, plate and, without even looking up, said, "There's no food left. I saved you a piece of cake in the fridge."

She said it as though it were the most natural thing in the world, as though it didn't matter whether I ate or not.

The class group chat had already gone crazy. It was filled with pictures of feasts and all kinds of nourishing soups.

Then I looked at the plates in front of Mason and my sister, Mia Young, then at my parents'.

There was nothing in front of me.

My chest tightened. I pulled my chair over beside the trash can and asked quietly, "Wasn't there still some pasta left?"

Dad put down his cutlery. "That's for Mason. He's got a fitness test coming up, so he needs to eat more."

Then he turned to Mason. "Keeping up with your training?"

"Yeah, pretty much."

"Does your ankle still hurt where you injured it last time?"

"Not really."

"I'll take you to the doctor the day after tomorrow and get it checked."

"It's been fine for ages."

"Just get it checked. Your mother and I will feel better."

They worried about him. They didn't care about me at all. They didn't even ask.

I tried to find something to talk about. "Dad, I took my college entrance exam today..."

He gave a vague hum without asking anything else and kept eating.

I waited two minutes, but he still didn't ask.

"There were so many people outside the school today. Some were holding flowers, and others were handing out water..."I clasped my hands together and stood awkwardly at the edge of the table, forcing out a dry little laugh.

But no one responded. It was as if the words coming out of my mouth, just like me, were nothing but air.

Mason kept gnawing on his rib. Mia glanced at me, then pulled out a tissue and wiped her mouth. Mom ladled a spoonful of soup into Dad's bowl without sparing me a single glance.

The table was unnaturally quiet. No one seemed to care that I'd taken the exam, how I'd done, or when my scores would come out. None of it mattered. At least, not to this family.

Finally, Mom turned to Mason. "Your competition is coming soon. Don't catch a cold from the air conditioning these next two nights."

Dad nodded. "There's been a lot of flu going around lately. Better be careful."

Mia chimed in, "If you do well, I've got a present for you!"

"Don't worry. I'll give it everything I've got!" Mason replied before gulping down two mouthfuls of water.

Then he smiled at me and added, "Remember to eat your cake."

I didn't like that smile. Something about it hurt my eyes.

I looked at the piece of cake. The frosting had melted, and the strawberries had gone limp and turned a dull reddish-brown. It was the leftover scrap from Mason's birthday cake five days ago.

I remembered that day clearly because I'd asked Mom for 20 dollars to buy a new stationery set.

When she heard the price, she'd shaken her head. "20 dollars for a few pens and rulers? That's too expensive. We've got three kids. We need to save money."

But then she'd turned around and ordered Mason a fancy mousse-covered birthday cake.

I'd secretly looked up the price on my phone. It cost a full 100 dollars. That was enough to buy 5 stationery sets, 25 sets of practice papers, or decent meals for me for 10 days.

I really wanted to know what made a 100-dollar cake so different from the 10-dollar ones I rarely bought for myself.

But Mom had cut the cake into only four pieces, one for each of them. There hadn't been one for me.

I had swallowed my anger and asked, "Where's mine?"

She had swallowed her bite of cake and mumbled, "That stuff gives you diarrhea. Don't eat it."

Now the cake sat in the fridge, melted and spoiled, because no one wanted it anymore.

So now I was allowed to eat it, and she wasn't afraid it would give me diarrhea.

I carried the cake back to my chair.

Mia suddenly shouted, "Move!"

Before I could get out of the way, a crumpled tissue struck me squarely in the forehead. The grime on it smeared across my eyelid.

Mom scoffed. "How stupid! There are so many places you could sit, and you had to sit beside the trash can? No wonder you're just like the trash. Completely useless!"

My hand froze halfway to my face for only a moment. Then I calmly wiped myself clean and looked up at the family before me.

Four people sat around a square table, with four sets of plates and cutlery laid out before them. Each of them had a place of their own.

Mason liked sitting across from the TV because he could watch the games from there. Mia liked sitting by the window because she said the air was better. My parents sat at opposite ends of the table, with Mason and Mia safely between them.

But there was no place for me.

Three days after Mia left, Dad came to the university.Unlike Mia, he showed no guilt. The moment he saw me, he started blaming me. "Madison Young, what's wrong with you? Mason is at a critical stage of his rehabilitation. He can't be left alone. Your mother is taking care of him, and she'll come see you when she can."Mia came all this way to see you. That was already her way of giving you an opening. How can you be so inconsiderate of what your parents are going through?"Before, he'd blamed me for being withdrawn and unlikable. Now, he blamed me for being immature and failing to understand them. Yet he still expected me to wait.I laughed. For the first time, I spoke with a sharpness that surprised even me. "So I'm inconsiderate of you? Then when did you ever consider me?"Why was everything they wore and used always new while I was expected to make do with their old things? Why could they sign up for whatever classes they wanted and buy whatever toys they liked while I could

It was pouring that day.I'd just come out of the laboratory when a professor told me someone was waiting for me at the entrance.I hadn't even had a chance to guess who it might be before I saw Mia standing outside beneath an umbrella. She'd lost some weight. A nervous, lonely look lingered on her face.I stopped about six feet away from her. I didn't move any closer, nor did I greet her.Her lips moved as she called my name. "Madison..."I hummed in response.Rain fell between us, streaking through the space that separated us.I heard the hoarseness in her voice when she asked, "Are you doing okay?"I nodded. "I'm doing fine."She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but the words seemed to fail her.In the end, she scratched her head. "Mom and Dad were actually supposed to come see you two months ago, but Mason had an accident. Someone stepped on his ankle during a match, and the injury was so bad that the doctor said he might never be able to play soccer a

On my first day at Southlink University, I found a coffee shop on the street just outside campus that offered room and board in exchange for work. The owner was a local office worker who rarely had time to run the shop. She had been planning to close it down when I happened to come across her."I'll provide your meals and a place to stay, and I'll pay you 2,000 dollars a month. Once school starts, I'll find someone else to take over. All I ask is that you run the shop for me until then. How does that sound?"I never expected to stumble across an opportunity like that.I quickly nodded. With three months until school started, I could save 6,000 dollars.First, I'd pay back the 500 dollars my school advisor had lent me. Then I'd register for this year's physics competition. Since my tuition and fees were fully waived, I wouldn't have to worry about covering my living expenses for the semester.…Time passed quickly.During my first month at the university, I signed up for the ph

The next day, an interview video from Cedar Hill High School suddenly went viral.Within just a few hours that morning, it had racked up millions of views. The title read: [The Physics Champion and Top Scorer in Our City, Madison Young, Through My Eyes!]The interviewees weren't the advisor of the senior advanced class or any of the other teachers. They were students from Madison's senior-year class. On camera, the students looked young and shy, but their eyes lit up whenever they talked about Madison. The reporter asked, "His name is Madison Young. Why do you call him Mister Wait-Your-Turn?""At first, Mister Wait-Your-Turn was just a nickname we came up with for fun. We noticed that he was always wearing his brother's old clothes and shoes and using his sister's broken pens and worn-out backpacks. There was never anything new in his schoolbag.""Everything he owned was something he had to wait for his brother or sister to get tired of and throw away before he could use it. Eve

Sophia stood frozen for a long moment before she finally came back to her senses. She stammered, "W-Who are you looking for? Madison? Not Mason? Or Mia?"The reporters stared at her in confusion. The female reporter at the front paused before answering, "Mrs. Young, we're looking for Madison Young, the top student at Cedar Hill High School. The top scorer in the city!"At that, Liam, who had been in the bedroom watching the stock market, could no longer sit still. He shut down his computer and hurried out to usher everyone into the living room, where he served them drinks one by one.Only then did he sit down and ask cautiously, "Excuse me, but is there some kind of misunderstanding? Madison's grades are terrible. How could he possibly be a top student, let alone the top scorer in the city?"If you're here to interview my eldest son, Mason, I'd believe that. He's a forward on the state soccer team, after all, and he just—"Unfortunately, he didn't get the chance to finish before

I stood in the shadows of the kitchen. As I listened to those words, I couldn't stop my hands from trembling.Almost instinctively, I pulled out my phone and checked my bank account. The $500 my school advisor had transferred to me was still there. It wasn't much, but it was enough for a sleeper berth on a train south. Enough to tide me over until university started if I worked at a coffee shop. Enough for two sets of pajamas, a pair of slippers, and a comforter.I wouldn't have to hear that something was too expensive. I wouldn't have to wait for someone else's hand-me-downs.It was enough to let me walk out of this prison without asking anyone for money. Enough to spare me from those cruel, knife-sharp words.Dad's cold reprimands continued.Mason and Mia had finished eating long ago and slipped off to their rooms. My grandparents sighed and tried to persuade Dad to calm down, but before long, they joined in the judgment against me. Only Mom remained silent.I clenched my fis
