Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Three Two
Wendy stayed quiet for a long time before responding in a hoarse voice. "No matter what happens, we'll always be kindred spirits."

"I won't come looking for you again. When you come to your senses, take this to my mentor," Abel said before leaving in tears.

As I lay on the floor, overcome by dizziness, my mind suddenly drifted back to when I was 13.

After I'd gotten bullied at the school for the blind, I came home with a swollen, bruised head. Wendy was absolutely furious. She was such a smart kid, but she insisted on transferring to that school just to stay by my side.

And in order to catch up with the curriculum from regular schools, she never got a full night's sleep for years.

When I turned 18, my mom remarried.

She sobbed while holding my hand. "James, my new husband can't take care of a blind kid for me. It's been so hard on me. You understand, right?

"I only took Wendy in for your sake in the first place. She should be the one taking care of you!"

Just like that, Mom left with her suitcase, leaving behind our old home and Wendy with me.

The years of exhaustion from taking care of me eventually took a toll on Wendy's health. She was just 18 when she became ill.

Time and time again, I begged her to leave me, to stop burdening herself with me.

But she'd just smile, ruffle my hair, and say, "You're such a crybaby. Take the sparrows outside, for example. They always stick together. Neither one can be without the other."

Now that this sparrow was tired, she should just fly away on her own. An unwanted blind guy like me would have died long ago if Wendy hadn't taken care of me.

I should have died somewhere Wendy would never know about so that she wouldn't blame herself.

I rubbed the back of my head, which was throbbing with pain. Just as I was feeling around and trying to stand up, the door opened.

"What happened?"

Wendy's voice was incredibly hoarse. "Where did all this blood come from?”

A comment floated past my vision. "Are you kidding me? You were the one who pushed him! Why are you acting surprised?"

I tried my best to smile. "Sorry, I accidentally tripped since I couldn't see where I was going."

The second I said that, a glass shattered at my feet. "James, how many years have you lived in this house? How can you still not remember your way around?"

As I heard her heavy, ragged breathing, I tugged at my sleeve, feeling upset. "I'm sorry for being useless, Wendy."

Wendy took out the white cane that had been left untouched for years and dragged me outside in big strides.

Unable to keep up with her, I nearly fell down the steps a few times, but she never stopped for me.

I grabbed her in fear. "Wendy, where are we going?"

As Wendy came to a sudden stop, I crashed into her so hard that my nose bled.

I frantically tried to wipe my nose, only to hear her voice crack.

"James, there are countless blind people in this world. How come everyone else can live a normal life with a cane, but you can't? I'm not your seeing-eye dog! I can't be your guide dog for the rest of my life!"

As my heart tightened, Wendy gave me a forceful push from behind. Her cold voice sounded from behind me. "If you don't learn how to use the tactile paving by tonight, then don't bother coming home."

Then, her voice and her scent were gone. All that remained in my ears was the sound of the wind, traffic, and passersby whispering. "Is he blind? What's he doing out here? Is he trying to pull some kind of insurance scam?"

The darkness and panic swallowed me whole, like a giant gaping maw.

I gripped the cane tightly. As I fought the urge to scream, I softly said, "Wendy, I'm scared."

Back when I just got blind, I had a hard time adjusting. Every time I woke up to pure darkness, I'd cry my eyes out from fear.

Wendy would always rush into my room to grab my hand right away. "I'm right here. There's no need to be scared."

But now, the only response I got was the sound of the wind.

The comments were still filled with criticism and outrage. "Damn, wasn't she the one who swore she'd hold his hand for the rest of his life and said he didn't need to learn how to use a white cane? People really do change their minds fast!"

I wiped away my tears. That wasn't true.

I had long forgotten everything I knew about tactile paths. I stumbled along, tapping the ground, thinking that caring for a blind person like me must have been too much for Wendy.

I wandered aimlessly, finally stopping right where the sound of the honking cars was loudest.

If I just got hit by a car right now, Wendy could finally be a free sparrow, right?

But the crash I was expecting never came. Instead, I was yanked into someone's arms.

Wendy's body was trembling slightly as she sounded utterly desperate. "James, you're blind, not stupid! Why can't you just learn?"

"Don't cry, Wendy. Your eyes are too precious for tears."Wendy's tears came pouring out like a broken dam as she sobbed uncontrollably."James, you're the one who gave me my life. I don't have a home anymore. I just want to go home. It hurts so much. Where am I supposed to find my rib? I don't know, I really don't… I'm so sorry."She was rambling, but I understood what she was trying to say. She was just tired."It's okay, Wendy."Any sparrow would be exhausted if it had to spend its life looking after a blind companion.Just like when we were kids, I gently pulled Wendy into a hug, patting her back softly. "It's okay, Wendy. Don't be scared."Her sobbing slowly subsided. I gently wiped her face with a handkerchief. "Wendy, you should go back to your home. When I found you in the snow back then, I already told you that you can go wherever you want to go."I was like a cage to her. Locking her up for the rest of her life would simply be too much for her.Wendy covered her eyes

I stood there frozen, trash bag in hand, and let out a long sigh.Oh, Wendy, honestly…After Jessica ended the call, she turned around and caught my blank, unfocused stare. Her voice carried a hint of worry. "James…"I just smiled at her. "It's okay, Jessica. There's some pasta left. You should tell her to come up and have some."Wendy came upstairs, but she stood outside the door for a long time before she finally worked up the nerve to knock. I beamed in the direction of the door."You're here, Wendy! You must be starving. Come eat. Try out my cooking."I kept my tone super casual, as if she had merely gone to work and returned home like before. Wendy pulled out a chair before sitting down in silence. She stuffed the pasta into her mouth in big bites as her tears fell into the bowl. The whole time, I waited quietly for her to finish the food. Then I heard her voice, which was thick with sobs. "James, can a lost sparrow still find its way back home?"Even when she was abando

Other than Wendy, I'd never been this close to anyone before. I let Chris hold my hand as I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.This was supposed to be shy? I refused to believe that no one wanted to be friends with such a cute kid.Chris wasn't timid at all; he kept swinging my hand back and forth at my silence. "Please? Please? Just take pity on me."My face flushed bright red, and I stammered out an "okay". Chris beamed in response.Like I thought, "shy" was the last word to describe him. He had absolutely no fear of strangers.Every day, he'd show up at my door lugging bags of food Jessica made, feel his way inside, and plop himself right down on my couch. Most of the time, he did the talking while I listened.Chris would get pouty sometimes, too. "You never talk to me! If you don't want to be my friend, then I'm not talking to you either!"I panicked, my face turning red again. "No, that's not true. I do want to be friends, and I do like you."While grinning smu

Abel let out a laugh as he teared up. "Is this how James destroyed the artistic hands in you? How many more hands do you have left for him to ruin?"Did Abel hurt his hand because of me? The guilt hit me like a tidal wave, crushing me completely."I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I thought I could finally see a path ahead of me and wanted to walk along it. I didn't know… I didn't know he was—""That's enough! James, you're blind! What kind of path could you possibly have seen?" Wendy cut me off, her icy voice laced with disgust. Her voice came out strained and unrecognizable as she continued, "Wasn't ruining my ability to paint enough for you? Please tell me how many more people have to give up their futures because of you."I froze where I stood, trembling as I apologized over and over again. She was right. I was completely blind. How could I have possibly believed I could see?Wendy quickly brought Abel to the hospital. As she passed by me, she didn't say another word or even acknowle

I tried my hardest to open my eyes as wide as I could, hoping to see just a glimmer of something. But no matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't see a thing. And I could no longer see the comments in my head either. However, Wendy's familiar scent overwhelmed me, flooding my senses all at once.Confused, I took a deep breath, only to find that the familiar floral scent was still there.I lay there on the hospital bed, at a loss. "So I didn't die?"All of a sudden, Wendy grabbed me by the shoulders with such force that I felt like my bones were going to break.Nevertheless, she sounded as calm as still water as she uttered, "James, stop messing around. I'm not going anywhere anymore. I'm never leaving again."Her words made me feel like I was still submerged in that icy water, my heart becoming cold and heavy. My mouth felt dry as I parted my lips. "Wendy, I was never messing around. I was serious."I was serious about wanting to die.Wendy weakly squeezed my hand. "James, I

"He needs a skin graft," the doctor said.Wendy lowered her head blankly, rolled up her pant leg, and looked at the skin on her thigh. "Can my skin be used?"Abel rushed in at that moment. As he had feelings for Wendy and couldn't bear to see her talent being wasted, he just couldn't bring himself to leave."No way! Wendy, you said it yourself! You've paid back what you owed him, so why are you still hurting yourself for him?"You're a young woman! How could you give him your skin? Have you forgotten what he said? He only saved you back then so he could treat you like a guide dog!"Wendy's vacant gaze drifted over to him. "You know what? That day, I knew everything he said was a lie. So why did I let my anger get the better of me that day and decide to leave him?"The way Wendy looked at Abel was like she wasn't really seeing him. "Why did I have to be so stubborn that day?"Wendy pinched her thigh until it turned pale. She thought back to that day, to how happily she had been
