Chapter 1

I carefully made my way forward, scared I'd miss the live wire.Wendy Peck suddenly exclaimed, "James!"Her voice was choked with emotion, yet she stopped herself before she could say anything else.I played dumb, keeping my tone light as I said, "Does your head hurt again? Here, let me give you a massage."A comment flew by that read, "Hey, stop! The wire's right in front of you!"Great. If it was right in front of me, then I wouldn't miss it. But just as I was about to lower my foot, the doorbell rang all of a sudden, followed by the awful screech of a chair being violently pushed back."Watch out!"A sudden force tackled me to the ground. My head was ringing from the impact, and the pain was so bad I couldn't even process what had happened.Wendy helped me up, her hands shaking. "James, I'm sorry… There's a wire right there…"Comments filled with curses appeared. "Wendy, you idiot! Weren't you the one trying to get him killed? Why are you tearing up and getting all shaky no

Chapter 2

Wendy stayed quiet for a long time before responding in a hoarse voice. "No matter what happens, we'll always be kindred spirits.""I won't come looking for you again. When you come to your senses, take this to my mentor," Abel said before leaving in tears. As I lay on the floor, overcome by dizziness, my mind suddenly drifted back to when I was 13.After I'd gotten bullied at the school for the blind, I came home with a swollen, bruised head. Wendy was absolutely furious. She was such a smart kid, but she insisted on transferring to that school just to stay by my side. And in order to catch up with the curriculum from regular schools, she never got a full night's sleep for years. When I turned 18, my mom remarried. She sobbed while holding my hand. "James, my new husband can't take care of a blind kid for me. It's been so hard on me. You understand, right?"I only took Wendy in for your sake in the first place. She should be the one taking care of you!"Just like that, Mom lef

Chapter 3

"Why did the person who found me have to be blind?"Why? Silly Wendy. Why would she still care about me, then?Unable to take it anymore, I cried my heart out. "That's right! I'm not stupid! So just leave already! I don't need you to look after me!"I was only five when my parents' marriage fell apart. They fought every single day because neither of them wanted me. They didn't even notice when I went blind from a fever.I thought that maybe unwanted kids didn't even deserve to keep their eyesight. That was why, when I found Wendy lying alone in the snow, my heart broke for her. I didn't want there to be another kid in the world who lost their eyesight.Wendy weakly held my hand. "Alright, I'm sorry. Stop saying things you don't mean. You expect me to leave you here so you can get hit by a car?"She led me back home and never brought up using the cane again. However, I noticed she was spending more and more time in the study.Inside my room, I made a call. The moment they heard i

Chapter 4

As the flames spread, the smoke suffocated me, forcing me to the ground. My skin was being burned so badly that I could no longer feel the pain.Sobbing uncontrollably, I crawled toward the front door with everything I had. "James, you useless fool! Don't you dare die here!"If Wendy came back to a charred corpse, she'd never get over it for the rest of her life! The comments that popped into my head frantically tried to guide me, "Blindie, over here! Crawl this way!"I desperately crawled toward the direction the comments told me, but the smoke was simply too much. I slowly blacked out from asphyxiation. When I came to, I was already in the hospital. Wendy showed up shortly after with Abel right behind her.Wendy muttered, sounding completely drained, "I was only gone for a day. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?"I nervously wrung my hands. "I'm sorry…"A police officer harshly reprimanded Wendy, "What kind of guardian are you? How could you leave a blind man home alone?

Chapter 5

"Stop, Blindie! Don't go any further! There's a man-made lake right in front of you!"Ignoring the comments, I stepped forward to pick up Wendy.A splash sounded, and the freezing water closed in on me from every direction, flooding my senses. Right before I lost consciousness, a distant voice pierced through the water."Don't try to jump in impulsively! It's the dead of winter right now! He's probably already gone!"As I listened to that voice, I slowly closed my eyes and sank deeper and deeper into darkness. For a moment, I seemed to regain my sight. A sparrow with colorful feathers was hovering in front of my eyes.I reached out to shoo it away. A beautiful bird should fly freely. As Wendy watched the last ripple disappear into the calm water, all the color drained from her face. She couldn't understand how a blind person who was so deathly afraid of the dark could have the guts to jump into such freezing water. She started tearing at her own clothes, struggling frantically

Chapter 6

"He needs a skin graft," the doctor said.Wendy lowered her head blankly, rolled up her pant leg, and looked at the skin on her thigh. "Can my skin be used?"Abel rushed in at that moment. As he had feelings for Wendy and couldn't bear to see her talent being wasted, he just couldn't bring himself to leave."No way! Wendy, you said it yourself! You've paid back what you owed him, so why are you still hurting yourself for him?"You're a young woman! How could you give him your skin? Have you forgotten what he said? He only saved you back then so he could treat you like a guide dog!"Wendy's vacant gaze drifted over to him. "You know what? That day, I knew everything he said was a lie. So why did I let my anger get the better of me that day and decide to leave him?"The way Wendy looked at Abel was like she wasn't really seeing him. "Why did I have to be so stubborn that day?"Wendy pinched her thigh until it turned pale. She thought back to that day, to how happily she had been

Chapter 7

I tried my hardest to open my eyes as wide as I could, hoping to see just a glimmer of something. But no matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't see a thing. And I could no longer see the comments in my head either. However, Wendy's familiar scent overwhelmed me, flooding my senses all at once.Confused, I took a deep breath, only to find that the familiar floral scent was still there.I lay there on the hospital bed, at a loss. "So I didn't die?"All of a sudden, Wendy grabbed me by the shoulders with such force that I felt like my bones were going to break.Nevertheless, she sounded as calm as still water as she uttered, "James, stop messing around. I'm not going anywhere anymore. I'm never leaving again."Her words made me feel like I was still submerged in that icy water, my heart becoming cold and heavy. My mouth felt dry as I parted my lips. "Wendy, I was never messing around. I was serious."I was serious about wanting to die.Wendy weakly squeezed my hand. "James, I

Chapter 8

Abel let out a laugh as he teared up. "Is this how James destroyed the artistic hands in you? How many more hands do you have left for him to ruin?"Did Abel hurt his hand because of me? The guilt hit me like a tidal wave, crushing me completely."I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I thought I could finally see a path ahead of me and wanted to walk along it. I didn't know… I didn't know he was—""That's enough! James, you're blind! What kind of path could you possibly have seen?" Wendy cut me off, her icy voice laced with disgust. Her voice came out strained and unrecognizable as she continued, "Wasn't ruining my ability to paint enough for you? Please tell me how many more people have to give up their futures because of you."I froze where I stood, trembling as I apologized over and over again. She was right. I was completely blind. How could I have possibly believed I could see?Wendy quickly brought Abel to the hospital. As she passed by me, she didn't say another word or even acknowle

Chapter 9

Other than Wendy, I'd never been this close to anyone before. I let Chris hold my hand as I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.This was supposed to be shy? I refused to believe that no one wanted to be friends with such a cute kid.Chris wasn't timid at all; he kept swinging my hand back and forth at my silence. "Please? Please? Just take pity on me."My face flushed bright red, and I stammered out an "okay". Chris beamed in response.Like I thought, "shy" was the last word to describe him. He had absolutely no fear of strangers.Every day, he'd show up at my door lugging bags of food Jessica made, feel his way inside, and plop himself right down on my couch. Most of the time, he did the talking while I listened.Chris would get pouty sometimes, too. "You never talk to me! If you don't want to be my friend, then I'm not talking to you either!"I panicked, my face turning red again. "No, that's not true. I do want to be friends, and I do like you."While grinning smu

Chapter 10

I stood there frozen, trash bag in hand, and let out a long sigh.Oh, Wendy, honestly…After Jessica ended the call, she turned around and caught my blank, unfocused stare. Her voice carried a hint of worry. "James…"I just smiled at her. "It's okay, Jessica. There's some pasta left. You should tell her to come up and have some."Wendy came upstairs, but she stood outside the door for a long time before she finally worked up the nerve to knock. I beamed in the direction of the door."You're here, Wendy! You must be starving. Come eat. Try out my cooking."I kept my tone super casual, as if she had merely gone to work and returned home like before. Wendy pulled out a chair before sitting down in silence. She stuffed the pasta into her mouth in big bites as her tears fell into the bowl. The whole time, I waited quietly for her to finish the food. Then I heard her voice, which was thick with sobs. "James, can a lost sparrow still find its way back home?"Even when she was abando
