Chapter 2

作者: Poplars
When I opened my eyes again, I was floating in midair. I looked down at the cryopod and stared at the stiff, curled-up figure inside, utterly dazed.

The girl in the pod had frost clinging to her hair and eyebrows. Her lips were a deep shade of purple, and she lay perfectly still.

Was that me? Was I dead?

Outside the pod, the base was in utter ruins. The place I had lived for the past five years was reduced to rubble, the streets littered with severed limbs. It was impossible to tell which belonged to zombies and which belonged to my old friends.

I looked through body after body, searching.

"Where are you, Mom? Dad? Dad's the best commander there is. Nothing could have happened to them."

My voice wavered. "They must have just evacuated for now. They'll come back for me."

I checked corpse after corpse until I was too exhausted to keep going, but I still couldn't find them anywhere.

I drifted back to what used to be my room. The cozy space was now completely trashed. Amid the broken bodies, I found a rag doll—the one Mom had given me for my fifth birthday.

There was a tear on its belly from when I had accidentally ripped it, and Mom had promised she would sew it up for me whenever she found some free time.

I floated in the corner of the room, waiting quietly.

One day passed. Then two. Then a week.

Over the ruins, the snow fell and melted, then fell again. I waited for what felt like an eternity.

Suddenly, a violent tug yanked at my ethereal form. My weightless body was dragged across the ruined city and down into an underground fortress.

The place was brightly lit and buzzing with life. A massive party was underway, thrown to celebrate Beckett's recovery.

In an apocalypse ravaged by zombie attacks, they had somehow managed to find colorful ribbons, balloons, and a massive cake.

Dad stood on a platform, beaming as he raised his glass to the crowd. "A toast to our hero and the future of humanity, Beckett! We have successfully extracted a perfect antibody from his blood."

The crowd erupted into deafening cheers.

Mom gently cut a thick slice of cake for Beckett. "That's our Beckett, always the sweetest and most thoughtful."

She paused, and contempt crept into her voice. "Not like that ungrateful wretch who only ever caused trouble for us. She never gave us a moment's peace."

Somewhere in the crowd, someone asked in a hushed voice, "Commander Walker, where's Brielle? Why isn't she here?"

Dad let out a cold snort and casually waved his hand, his wine glass still in his grip. "She's in confinement back at the old base, throwing a tantrum."

"A little hardship will straighten her out. Kids need discipline when they don't listen," he added confidently. "Don't worry. Those military-grade cryopods are built like tanks. The zombies won't be able to get inside to kill her."

I lunged forward, desperately trying to scream the truth in their faces.

"I'm dead! You left me in your so-called military cryopod, and I froze to death!" I shouted.

But my hands passed straight through Dad's body. I couldn't touch anything, nor could I make a single sound.

The devastating reality finally sank in—I had been forgotten, left behind forever in that agonizingly cold cryopod.

I floated above the crowd, watching them laugh and clink their glasses together.

Perhaps this was for the best. I would never have to give blood again and watch it being fed into Beckett's veins.

That was something, at least.

Then, it was time for the scheduled nutritional supplements. A newly hired nutritionist walked in carrying two portions of nutrient paste—one plain and one strawberry-flavored.

The strawberry flavor used to be my special reward. It was given to me because I was always good during the blood draws, never crying or making a fuss.

When Dad caught sight of the two portions, his brows furrowed in annoyance.

Then, he snatched up the strawberry paste meant for me and threw it into the trash without a second glance.

Once everyone found out about my death, the power dynamics in the base shifted completely. Deputy Commander Harris… Well, he was now Commander Harris. He joined forces with several founding members of the base who had long harbored resentment toward my parents. Together, they called for Dad's impeachment, accusing him of multiple charges, including dereliction of duty, negligent homicide, and endangering the safety of the base. The survivors were in an uproar. They surrounded the command center, shouting their demands."Down with Eric Walker!""Justice for Brielle Walker!""A murderer can't be the commander!"The man who had once been seen as a hero and savior was now the target of everyone's contempt, and Dad didn't fight back against the public outcry. He calmly handed over the badge that represented his supreme authority as the commander. At the public hearing, Commander Harris presented all the evidence before everyone. The base's resource allocation logs clearly showed tha

Upon hearing the truth, Mom fainted. When she woke up again, she saw my ripped cloth doll on the bed next to her. I had no idea how my doll ended up there. She clutched the doll with a foolish smile on her face. Reaching into her medical kit, she grabbed a suture needle and some surgical thread. Stitch by stitch, she clumsily mended the tear.Even though the needle pricked her fingers multiple times, staining the white thread with blood, she didn't feel a thing. All her attention went to mending the doll.At last, she sewed up the rip. The stitches were crooked and uneven, looking like an ugly centipede stained with blood. She hugged the blood-stained doll tightly, a tender smile appearing on her face."It doesn't hurt anymore, Brielle… I fixed it for you. It's not in any more pain now. Let's go to sleep…"She began to hum a soft lullaby, the only one she'd ever sung to me when I was little. The singing voice was as broken as the heart that had long since rotted away inside her.

Dad's shoulders trembled. It looked like he was crying. As far as I could remember, it was the first time I had ever seen him cry."I did turn around…" His voice was hoarse. "I turned back to look… I saw the hatch shaking… I… I thought she was just kicking up a fuss on purpose to force us to let her out… I just wanted her to learn a lesson…"A lesson?Hovering in the air, I let out a mirthless laugh. My wonderful father had taught me a lesson, alright—one that cost me my life.Dad looked like all the strength had been drained out of him. He took off his coat, the one that signified his supreme authority as the commander. Then, he bent down and carefully lifted my stiff, deformed corpse from the floor, carrying me out of the cryopod. He wrapped the coat tightly around me, as if that would somehow inject warmth back into my body. The ride back to the base was silent, the truth having dawned on everyone.I, Brielle Walker, the daughter of the commander of the base, had frozen to de

After Dad hollered the command, a small team of elites was assembled immediately. After hearing the news, Mr. Lewis, who had always cared a lot about me, insisted on joining the team. He was one of the base's founding members and also a brilliant mechanical engineer.Even from the beginning, his expression was grim.Throughout the ride, the atmosphere was suffocating. Sitting in the vehicle, Mom kept twisting her hands tightly together, but she stubbornly insisted, "Brielle must've run off long ago… She definitely ran out by herself… She's not a baby. It's not like she'd starve herself to death… "I bet she's hiding somewhere, just waiting for us to beg her…"Mr. Lewis, who sat in the front passenger seat, finally couldn't take it anymore. He glared through the rearview mirror and looked right at Mom's pale face as he cut her off, saying, "Mrs. Walker, the cryopod's thermal regulation system can only last 72 hours, at most. "How many days has it been since the zombie horde attac

Another disaster soon followed. In the span of a single night, the entire supply of processed serum stored in the base was contaminated by an unknown fungus. The serum was the lifeblood of the base. It was the source of every survivor's courage to leave the safety of the base to fight the zombies. And now, panic spread through the entire base like a plague."Did you hear the news? All the serum reserves can no longer be used!""What are we supposed to do now? If another zombie horde comes, we're screwed!""It's all Beckett Walker's fault. Isn't he supposed to be some kind of hero? Why is his blood suddenly useless now?"Voices of doubt and agitation came from all sides. Dad was so overwhelmed that his eyes turned bloodshot after several sleepless days and nights.Mom stayed by Beckett's bed at all times, crying her heart out.Mom and Dad, once the proud power couple who ruled the base, were now social outcasts. Everyone in the base avoided them.During an emergency meeting amo

"From now on, only prepare Beckett's portion," Dad commanded. The nutritionist froze, looking at him in utter confusion. "Commander Walker… What about Brielle's portion?"Mom waved her hand in annoyance. "Don't bother with her. That ungrateful girl is stubborn to a fault. She's still throwing a tantrum, convinced she's irreplaceable."They were certain that once my confinement ended, I would come crawling back with my tail between my legs, crying and begging for their forgiveness. They didn't remember that it was Dad who had personally ordered the pod's supply systems to be cut to the bare minimum. They had also forgotten that the sudden zombie outbreak had turned the old base into a graveyard. To them, I was just playing a childish game to vent my resentment. Dad even saw it as a direct challenge to his authority as commander. He picked up the radio on the command console and tuned it to the old base's public frequency. After a burst of sharp static, he spoke into the receiver,
