Chapter 1

The heavy door of the cryopod slammed shut right in front of my face. Freezing mist instantly enveloped me, blurring everything outside into a hazy smear.

I pounded on the reinforced door with all my might until my palms turned bright red from the impact.

"Dad! Mom! I didn't mean to! I'll never do it again!" I screamed. "Please, let me out!"

Mom's voice cut through the thick walls of the pod.

"Oh, now you're sorry? Too late!" she snapped. "Beckett has a fragile constitution. His immune system is much weaker than yours. You stole his high-energy nutrient meals. Were you trying to kill him? You're going to stay in there and think about what you've done!"

I shook my head frantically, even though I knew they couldn't see me. Tears mixed with the icy condensation, blurring my vision.

"I didn't! I just grabbed the wrong one!"

Then came Dad's voice, cold and completely devoid of emotion, "24 hours of confinement."

He turned to the medical staff standing nearby and barked an order, "Cut off all supply systems to the pod. Keep only basic life support running."

A doctor in a white lab coat hesitated. "Commander Walker… Doing that under these low-temperature conditions could cause irreversible damage to the child's body."

Dad's tone left absolutely no room for argument. "Execute the order."

Then, he spoke to me again through the pod door, "Brielle, the door will unlock automatically when your time is up. Use this time to properly reflect on your actions."

The biting cold began to creep up from the soles of my feet.

I pulled my knees to my chest, my teeth chattering violently as uncontrollable tremors wracked my entire body. Before long, I felt my hands grow so numb that I could barely move them.

I was so cold.

I knew I had messed up.

I would never dare covet my younger brother Beckett Walker's food again—not even a whiff of it.

Suddenly, the piercing wail of a red alert echoed through the entire base. It was a Code Red—the highest-level zombie horde invasion!

I could hear panicked screams, frantic footsteps, and the deafening roar of heavy gunfire.

I summoned every ounce of strength I had left to shout, my voice trembling and stuttering from the cold. "Dad! Mom! Let me out! The zombies are here!"

Through the tiny observation window, I caught glimpses of the chaos outside.

Dad swept a terrified Beckett up into his arms, shielding him tightly against his chest, while Mom clutched a briefcase packed with core data files.

Their eyes swept over the cryopod I was trapped in, but their gazes slid right past me without pausing for even a fraction of a second, as if I were nothing more than a piece of junk.

No, wait—Dad turned back. He shot a glance in my direction.

But there was no worry in his eyes, only annoyance and disgust, as if he were thinking that even at a time like this, I was still acting out and throwing a tantrum.

The lights in the base began to flicker violently.

With a sharp beep, the cryopod's backup power indicator flashed to life, glowing a menacing red.

The piercing cold invaded my body from all sides, seeping into my bones like jagged shards of ice. Slowly, my consciousness began to slip away, swallowed by the creeping darkness.

Once everyone found out about my death, the power dynamics in the base shifted completely. Deputy Commander Harris… Well, he was now Commander Harris. He joined forces with several founding members of the base who had long harbored resentment toward my parents. Together, they called for Dad's impeachment, accusing him of multiple charges, including dereliction of duty, negligent homicide, and endangering the safety of the base. The survivors were in an uproar. They surrounded the command center, shouting their demands."Down with Eric Walker!""Justice for Brielle Walker!""A murderer can't be the commander!"The man who had once been seen as a hero and savior was now the target of everyone's contempt, and Dad didn't fight back against the public outcry. He calmly handed over the badge that represented his supreme authority as the commander. At the public hearing, Commander Harris presented all the evidence before everyone. The base's resource allocation logs clearly showed tha

Upon hearing the truth, Mom fainted. When she woke up again, she saw my ripped cloth doll on the bed next to her. I had no idea how my doll ended up there. She clutched the doll with a foolish smile on her face. Reaching into her medical kit, she grabbed a suture needle and some surgical thread. Stitch by stitch, she clumsily mended the tear.Even though the needle pricked her fingers multiple times, staining the white thread with blood, she didn't feel a thing. All her attention went to mending the doll.At last, she sewed up the rip. The stitches were crooked and uneven, looking like an ugly centipede stained with blood. She hugged the blood-stained doll tightly, a tender smile appearing on her face."It doesn't hurt anymore, Brielle… I fixed it for you. It's not in any more pain now. Let's go to sleep…"She began to hum a soft lullaby, the only one she'd ever sung to me when I was little. The singing voice was as broken as the heart that had long since rotted away inside her.

Dad's shoulders trembled. It looked like he was crying. As far as I could remember, it was the first time I had ever seen him cry."I did turn around…" His voice was hoarse. "I turned back to look… I saw the hatch shaking… I… I thought she was just kicking up a fuss on purpose to force us to let her out… I just wanted her to learn a lesson…"A lesson?Hovering in the air, I let out a mirthless laugh. My wonderful father had taught me a lesson, alright—one that cost me my life.Dad looked like all the strength had been drained out of him. He took off his coat, the one that signified his supreme authority as the commander. Then, he bent down and carefully lifted my stiff, deformed corpse from the floor, carrying me out of the cryopod. He wrapped the coat tightly around me, as if that would somehow inject warmth back into my body. The ride back to the base was silent, the truth having dawned on everyone.I, Brielle Walker, the daughter of the commander of the base, had frozen to de

After Dad hollered the command, a small team of elites was assembled immediately. After hearing the news, Mr. Lewis, who had always cared a lot about me, insisted on joining the team. He was one of the base's founding members and also a brilliant mechanical engineer.Even from the beginning, his expression was grim.Throughout the ride, the atmosphere was suffocating. Sitting in the vehicle, Mom kept twisting her hands tightly together, but she stubbornly insisted, "Brielle must've run off long ago… She definitely ran out by herself… She's not a baby. It's not like she'd starve herself to death… "I bet she's hiding somewhere, just waiting for us to beg her…"Mr. Lewis, who sat in the front passenger seat, finally couldn't take it anymore. He glared through the rearview mirror and looked right at Mom's pale face as he cut her off, saying, "Mrs. Walker, the cryopod's thermal regulation system can only last 72 hours, at most. "How many days has it been since the zombie horde attac

Another disaster soon followed. In the span of a single night, the entire supply of processed serum stored in the base was contaminated by an unknown fungus. The serum was the lifeblood of the base. It was the source of every survivor's courage to leave the safety of the base to fight the zombies. And now, panic spread through the entire base like a plague."Did you hear the news? All the serum reserves can no longer be used!""What are we supposed to do now? If another zombie horde comes, we're screwed!""It's all Beckett Walker's fault. Isn't he supposed to be some kind of hero? Why is his blood suddenly useless now?"Voices of doubt and agitation came from all sides. Dad was so overwhelmed that his eyes turned bloodshot after several sleepless days and nights.Mom stayed by Beckett's bed at all times, crying her heart out.Mom and Dad, once the proud power couple who ruled the base, were now social outcasts. Everyone in the base avoided them.During an emergency meeting amo

"From now on, only prepare Beckett's portion," Dad commanded. The nutritionist froze, looking at him in utter confusion. "Commander Walker… What about Brielle's portion?"Mom waved her hand in annoyance. "Don't bother with her. That ungrateful girl is stubborn to a fault. She's still throwing a tantrum, convinced she's irreplaceable."They were certain that once my confinement ended, I would come crawling back with my tail between my legs, crying and begging for their forgiveness. They didn't remember that it was Dad who had personally ordered the pod's supply systems to be cut to the bare minimum. They had also forgotten that the sudden zombie outbreak had turned the old base into a graveyard. To them, I was just playing a childish game to vent my resentment. Dad even saw it as a direct challenge to his authority as commander. He picked up the radio on the command console and tuned it to the old base's public frequency. After a burst of sharp static, he spoke into the receiver,
