Chapter 4

작가: Dragon Skywalker
Monica froze for two seconds before laughing. "The chairman? Wow. You really committed to the act."

Victor frowned at me. "Ms. Bennett, you're clearly not in the right state of mind. I suggest you go home and rest."

I ignored him and spoke into the phone, "Marcus, pull up the original ownership documents, the property management agreement, and all registration records for the Emerald Bay project."

"Already on it. The legal team and security teams will be there in ten minutes."

I glanced at Daniel. His hand was still gripping my wrist.

"Bring weapons, too."

Daniel immediately released me, suddenly realizing what I meant.

Monica's expression hardened.

"Who do you think you're scaring? Making a few phone calls doesn't make you the boss."

Victor pulled her aside and lowered his voice. "Mrs. Prescott, she might actually know someone."

Monica glared at him. "What are you so afraid of? Everyone knows Emerald Bay belongs to Whitmore Properties. What could a young girl like her possibly do?"

"But she mentioned ownership documents…"

"She's bluffing." Monica sneered. "Young people these days love putting on a show. One phone call, and suddenly she's throwing around words like 'board of directors.' If she were really the chairman, do you think she would've just sat there and taken all those insults in the residents' group?"

Seeing me remain silent, Monica seemed convinced she had the upper hand.

"Ms. Bennett, I'll give you one last chance. Apologize now. Admit that Lakeview Isle is a public area, and I'll have Mr. Hayes drop the charges against you for disrupting the construction.

"You'll also post a statement in the residents' group saying that you willingly supported my daughter's wedding and thanking the property management company for arranging everything."

"And?" I asked.

"You'll pay the island's cleanup costs yourself. Our wedding crew was delayed by half an hour, so you'll cover those losses, too."

I looked up at her. "How much?"

Monice crossed her arms. "300 thousand dollars. I'm being generous. We're neighbors, after all."

I nodded. "Noted."

Victor's patience ran out. "Ms. Bennett, stop being sarcastic. Mrs. Prescott has already been more than reasonable."

"I gave you chances, too."

What chances?"

I stood up.

"I already gave them to you. Before you cut the gate lock. Before you blocked the fire exit today. And before you let your security guards put their hands on me."

Victor's face darkened. "Don't make accusations without proof."

"The security cameras are everywhere."

He sneered. "The Lakeview Isle security system malfunctioned. The property cameras are under maintenance."

"What a coincidence," I scoffed. "Just my luck."

Monica laughed again. "Aren't you always going on about security footage? Go ahead. Get it. There are no cameras and no witnesses. Who's going to prove I slapped you?"

The nearby workers turned their heads away.

Daniel avoided eye contact, too.

I scanned the group.

No one spoke. Fabulous.

A black luxury SUV suddenly screeched to a stop by the lake. Six people in dark gray suits stepped out. Leading them was Marcus Morgan.

He looked thinner than he had three years ago, but the coldness in his eyes remained unchanged.

He walked toward me. The moment he saw my face, he froze. "Who did this?"

Monica looked him up and down. "Who are you supposed to be?"

Marcus ignored him.

He handed me a document folder. "Ms. Bennett, the board is already online. Whitmore Properties' chairman, Richard Whitmore, is on his way. He'll arrive in about 15 minutes."

Victor's face instantly went pale.

Monica frowned. "Richard Whitmore? You mean that Richard Whitmore from Whitmore Properties?"

Marcus finally turned to her. "Mrs. Prescott, Emerald Bay was developed by Whitmore Properties. 62% of Whitmore Properties is owned by Skylark Holdings, and Ms. Cecilia Bennett is the controlling shareholder of Skylark Holdings."

Edward's property management company was nothing more than a minor subsidiary of Whitmore Properties.

Monica's mouth fell open, her expression blank with disbelief.

Then she burst out laughing even louder.

"You people are really creative. The controlling shareholder? If she's the boss, then I'm the mayor's wife."

I opened the folder and pulled out the first document, handing it to Victor. "Article 17 of the property management agreement. Read it carefully."

Victor didn't take it.

So, Marcus read it out loud. "If the property management company fabricates owner resolutions, infringes upon independent property rights, or damages an owner's assets, the client reserves the right to immediately terminate the contract and pursue full compensation."

Victor swallowed hard.

At that moment, Monica's phone rang.

She glanced at the caller ID, looking annoyed.

"Edward, why are you calling? I'm busy."

A trembling male voice came from the other end. "Monica… Are you at Lakeview Isle?"

Monica rolled her eyes. "Yes. So what?"

"Stop immediately! Apologize to Ms. Bennett right now!"

She froze. "What did you say?"

"Mr. Whitmore from Whitmore Properties just called me. He said we forged property management company resolutions and illegally occupied the private property of Skylark Holdings' actual head. Who exactly did you offend?"

The day Lakeview Isle was sealed off, a drizzle fell. The new security gates had been installed, and the broken glass in the greenhouse had been cleared away. But the space left behind was painfully obvious. Macus stood beside me, staring at what remained. "The restoration team is here. We also reached out to Prof. Bennett's former research partners. They're willing to help salvage whatever specimens remain." I nodded. "Save whatever they can."Marcus then reported, "The Prescott family has already paid the first installment. Edward has been formally investigated, and Victor implicated the property management company's finance director. Monica posted a public apology, and Lily has quit social media." I said nothing. Marcus hesitated. "Some residents want to organize a group apology. They asked if you'd attend." "No.""They want to apologize to you in person." I looked out at the lake. "Yesterday, they wanted to watch the wedding in person. Today, they want to ap

Emerald Bay had never seen this kind of chaos. The moment the audit team arrived at the property management office, Victor stepped in to stop them."There are residents' private records inside. You can't just walk in."Marcus simply raised an eyebrow. "Are you opening the door, or do we need to call the police and have them witness us breaking it down?"Victor handed over the keys.I sat in the property management conference room with an ice pack pressed against my face.Monica and her daughter sat across from me. Lily hadn't stopped crying. "I'm getting married next month. The Internet is attacking me now. Cecilia, are you happy now?"I flipped through the damage assessment from my attorney. "No." She stared at me. "What more do you want?" "Compensation." Monica immediately looked up. "Name your price."Marcus slid the assessment across the table."The Lakeview Isle electronic gates and security system sustained approximately 1.8 million in damage. Six climate-con

Edward's face went pale, as if he had just seen a ghost. "Ms. Bennett, the maintenance fund issue is complicated. You can't judge it based on the surface figures alone."Marcus' voice was cold. "Mr. Prescott, you don't own any of the companies involved, but Kingsley Engineering—80% owned by your brother-in-law—handled 27 Emerald Bay contracts over the past five years, including elevator maintenance, exterior cleaning, and lakeside landscaping."Victor lowered his head and quietly took half a step back, trying to disappear into the crowd.Edward immediately pointed at him. "The property management company handled all of that! I only signed off on it."Victor looked up sharply. "Mr. Prescott, that's not what happened. Every time, you instructed us to use Kingsley Engineering for the bids." "You're lying!""I have the chat records." Monica broke down. "Stop fighting! Lily still has a wedding to plan!" I almost laughed in disbelief. The ground was covered in shattered specim

Monica's daughter was Lily Prescott, a wedding influencer with three million followers. When she saw the line of people in suits waiting outside, she froze for a moment. Then she quickly tucked the notebook behind her back."What are you filming? Get it away from me. I haven't even had a chance to fix my makeup!" I held out my hand. "Give it to me." Lily frowned. "Who are you?" Monica rushed over and grabbed her. "Lily, stop talking. Lily shook her off. "Mom, what are you doing? This notebook is dirty and old. I wouldn't even use it as a paint mat."My eyes fell on her nails. The edges of her pink acrylic nails were stained with mud and scraps of paper. That notebook was my mother's final field research journal. Inside were her handwritten collection routes and a photo I had slipped inside when I was ten. I held out my hand again. "Give me that." Lily rolled her eyes. "Seriously? You want this piece of junk? What's wrong with using it for the wedding setup? Why are you

Monica was still clutching her phone, her fingers trembling uncontrollably."Edward, are you sure about that? She's just a resident here."The man on the other end practically shouted. "She's Cecilia Bennett! The Cecilia Bennett from Skylark Holdings! Have you ever read the news?"Monica bit her lip. "But she never said anything."I handed the specimen box to Marcus."Do I need to report my assets to you?"Monica's face flushed red. "Don't get so smug. Even if you're rich, you can't just accuse people of whatever you want. Whether Lakeview Isle is private property is for the court to decide."Marcus adjusted his glasses."Mrs. Prescott, the property deed, survey maps, and land division agreement are all here. If you have any doubts, we welcome a court-ordered appraisal."Victor finally managed a strained smile. "Ms. Bennett, this may have all been a misunderstanding. Mrs. Prescott was simply organizing a community event, and the property management company was only trying to a
