Chapter 2

Penulis: AAA Builder
Ashton knocked on the door. "Are you dressed yet? The guests will be here soon."

I said nothing.

He knocked again, his tone softening slightly. "Once tonight's party is over, you'll officially be a daughter of the Scott family."

I glanced at the maid's uniform on the bed and put it on. In the mirror, I saw myself dressed in a gray maid's uniform, with a gold dog tag hanging from the collar around my neck.

My name was engraved on the dog tag.

By the time I went downstairs, the living room was already packed with people.

There were even quite a few reporters, their cameras mounted on tripods. They had set up a live-streaming station in the corner.

"Isabel's here! Everyone, please welcome the eldest daughter of the Scott family home!"

Tina stood in the center in a white evening gown. When she saw me, she smiled and led the room in applause.

Dozens of faces turned toward me at once. Some people put down their wine glasses. Others covered their mouths and laughed. A few simply raised their phones.

One reporter thrust a microphone toward me.

"Ms. Scott, what are your thoughts on the prison sentence you just served?"

Ashton blocked the microphone, frowning. "This is a family dinner. No interviews."

But he didn't stop the live-streaming cameras from rolling.

A wealthy woman came over and looked me up and down before tapping on the dog tag.

"Tina, is this the new maid your family hired?"

Tina giggled and said, "You shouldn't joke like that, Mrs. Kline. She's my sister."

"Oh…" Mrs. Kline hummed meaningfully. "The one who went to prison?"

Several people nearby began gossiping without making any effort to lower their voices around me.

"I heard what she did back then was pretty serious. She almost killed someone."

"Oh, dear. She looks like a pretty young woman, though. What a shame…"

Ashton took me around the room, introducing me to the guests. He chose his words carefully. "This is my sister, Isabel Scott. She made some mistakes in the past, but she's back with us now."

He didn't explicitly say I'd been to prison, but everyone understood what he meant.

Someone asked, "What mistakes did she make?"

Tina covered her mouth and whispered to her best friend, her voice just loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.

"Isabel got into a little trouble before, but my brothers have put the past behind them and brought her home. The Scott family never abandons its own."

About halfway through the party, someone started calling for Tina to perform. She graciously sat down at the piano and played a sonata. The music flowed perfectly, with not a single mistake.

When the final note faded, the entire room erupted in applause.

Tina stood and bowed to everyone before turning to me with an innocent smile. "Now it's your turn, Isabel. What did you prepare? Everyone's waiting."

I stood in the corner, my fingers tightening around the hem of my dress. No one had told me I was supposed to prepare a performance.

Tina tilted her head, as if she had suddenly thought of something. "Why don't you and Rex do a joint performance? You can crawl around on the floor with him!"

She clapped her hands and lifted Rex down from the couch. "Rex loves playing with people!"

The living room fell silent for a moment. Ashton's hand stiffened around his wineglass.

"Tina… There are so many people here, and the party is being live-streamed as well," Dalton muttered. "I don't think that's appropriate."

Tina's smile stiffened. "What's wrong with it? Haven't you always said that Rex is part of the family, too? What's wrong with having Isabel play with her family?"

She raised a hand to wipe the corner of her eye, her lips trembling. "Or is this because you're favoring Isabel over me? Everything I do is wrong, right?"

Dalton immediately stopped protesting. Ashton put down his wineglass and looked at me.

"Get on your knees."

I took a deep breath. The system sounded in my mind again. "Time remaining: 8 hours and 34 minutes."

I was leaving anyway. There was no point in trying to fight this. I bent my knees and put both hands on the floor. Just as I was about to drop onto all fours, a furious roar abruptly rang out behind me.

"Let me see who dares to make her crawl like a dog!"

On the day of my funeral, the sky was a beautiful shade of blue, and there was no breeze. My brothers and Nathan sat before my grave. White chrysanthemums covered the ground, and my name, Isabel Scott, was engraved on the gravestone.Dalton placed the mended stuffed bunny in front of the gravestone. He'd spent the entire night stitching it back together, carefully stuffing the cotton back inside and sewing its chewed-up ear back on. He had retraced the words "Izzy's Bunny" with new embroidery thread."Here you go," he said quietly. "I didn't keep it safe for you, but I've mended it for you now."Beside him, Preston was clutching the pair of racing gloves. He'd always thought Tina had bought them. Now he knew that I had earned them by working a part-time job for three months. He wanted to say something. He opened his mouth several times, but not a single word came out.Ashton sat at the very front, her back perfectly stiff and straight, looking like a statue. He stared at the name

Dalton closed the diary. Ashton stood motionless, the muscles in his face twitching. Preston crouched on the floor, both hands clasped over his head.Nathan leaned against the wall. His face was completely expressionless, but blood had splattered down his chest, soaking into his shirt. He didn't know why, but it felt as though his heart had been torn apart, and he couldn't stop coughing up blood. At the same time, all three brothers doubled over. The pain that shot through their hearts intensified. It was as though someone were ripping their hearts straight out of their chests.Ashton's knees slammed into the floor with a dull thud. He braced himself against the floor, lifted his head, and stared at Tina, who was standing at the foot of the stairs.Blood spilled from his mouth. "You killed my sister."Tina dropped to her knees with a thud and crawled over to Ashton, clutching his leg desperately."That's not what happened, Ashton! I was just afraid you wouldn't want me anymore! I

The car hadn't even come to a complete stop when Preston flung the door open and stormed into the house.Tina was sitting on the couch in the living room, looking at her phone. Hearing the commotion, she looked up with her usual sweet smile."You guys are home!"Preston snatched her phone from her hand and threw it onto the floor. The screen shattered."Did you set Isabel up back then?"Tina froze for a moment, then her eyes immediately reddened. "What are you talking about, Preston? I don't understand..."Ashton and Dalton walked in, with Nathan following behind them. Ashton stood in front of her, staring down at her as he spoke, his voice clear and sharp."Christy Fuller has confessed everything."For a moment, Tina turned pale. Immediately, tears spilled down her cheeks."Ashton... I know what you're talking about..."She dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around Ashton's leg."I was wrong, but I was genuinely scared… You guys had only just brought Isabel back home

In the interrogation room at the police station, Ashton, Dalton, and Preston sat in a row, with Nathan at the far end next to them. The detective sitting across from them opened a folder and pushed a stack of documents across the table."During our recent investigation into an insurance fraud case, we found clues that led us to Christy Fuller, the victim in that school poisoning case back then."He pulled out a medical examination report. "According to the medical report at the time, Christy suffered severe liver and kidney damage from the poisoning and would need to be on medication for the rest of her life. Based on that diagnosis, she filed a massive disability claim with the insurance company."But during her medical examination last month..."He turned the report around and pointed to the figures."All of her organs are fully functioning. She suffered no lasting effects from the poisoning whatsoever. The medical report and disability claim had been forged."Ashton took the

Everyone froze.Ashton was the first to speak. "Froze to death? It's August! It's 95 degrees outside, and you're telling me she froze to death?"The doctor spread out the report and pointed to the rows of data."The deceased's core body temperature was only 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The extensive frostbite on her extremities is consistent with exposure to subzero temperatures for at least four to five hours."He turned to the next page."As for the wounds on her body, they were not inflicted as a form of self-harm. She was using her own blood to keep herself warm."The hallway fell silent for a moment."What does that mean?" Dalton's voice tightened. The doctor pointed to the wound analysis in the report. "The wound on her wrist wasn't caused by horizontal or vertical cuts. It was caused by repeated friction."She pressed her wrist against the edge of a hard object and rubbed it back and forth, scraping the skin and flesh open to make it bleed, then smeared the blood over her bod

Even before James had stopped screaming, Nathan was already bounding up the stairs. He kicked the door to the guest bedroom out of his way and froze when he saw the curled-up figure on the bed.Blood had soaked into the bed. He saw the blackened lips and the stuffed bunny held close to the chest.Ashton rushed in right behind Nathan. He slammed into the doorframe and nearly collapsed to his knees, his legs going weak.Dalton pushed past everyone and threw himself by the bed. He checked for a breath and felt for a pulse.Nothing.There was nothing. He launched into a frenzy, placing his hands over my chest and starting CPR while shouting, "Call an ambulance!"Preston stood in the doorway. It took him three tries to just press the numbers, and his voice shook so badly he could barely give the address to the dispatcher. When the ambulance arrived, Dalton was still performing CPR. His palms slammed against my chest, his sweat dripping from his forehead onto my face. The paramedics
