Chapter 1

Penulis: AAA Builder
Dalton Scott, my second-oldest brother, opened the car door and said to me with a smile, "Come on. We're taking you home."

I had barely taken half a step when Tina Lewis poked her head out from the back seat.

"Wait!" She called out to stop me before turning to my brothers. "Dad gave me this car for my birthday last year..."

She glanced at the stained prison clothes I was wearing and frowned, her expression reluctant. "That stench coming off Isabel… It might seep into the leather seats. I won't be able to get rid of it…"

I slowly withdrew my foot, which was still hovering in midair.

Ashton Scott, my eldest brother, frowned as well. "Then we'll call her a cab. She can take a cab back to the house."

Tina immediately waved her hands frantically. "No, no! Isabel has been locked up in there for almost seven years now! She only just regained her freedom. How could we let her take a cab home by herself?"

She tilted her head, thought for a moment, then clapped her hand in realization before pointing at the trunk.

"Isabel can sit back there! It's only a 30-minute drive. She just has to put up with it for a bit, and we'll arrive in no time."

For a moment, my brothers' expressions turned awkward. Dalton opened his mouth to speak, but Tina's eyes had already turned red.

"Oh, forget it… Isabel can sit in the car, I guess. I'll just take a cab home myself. After all, whenever she comes back, I'm the one who always has to step aside for her."

Ashton's face darkened. He looked at me and said, "Get in. It's not that far. Just make do for now."

I walked to the back of the car and opened the trunk. A black shadow suddenly lunged at me. Sharp canine teeth sank into my forearm, instantly tearing through my skin, digging right into my flesh.

I let out a muffled groan of pain as blood trickled down my wrist.

Tina cried out from the front. "Oh! I forgot Rex was back there! I'm so sorry, Isabel. He usually doesn't bite people."

Then she paused and cocked her head to the side. She glanced at the collar around my neck and blinked innocently. "Oh. Maybe he saw your collar and… assumed you're like him? He's always been very territorial."

Before I could say anything, Dalton called out from the front, hurrying me. "What are you waiting for? Get in already!"

I had no choice but to curl up inside the trunk, pressing my bleeding arm beneath me. At that moment, the system sent me a countdown to my departure.

"Time remaining: 10 hours and 9 minutes."

When we arrived at the Scott residence, I went upstairs and stopped outside my old bedroom. The moment I opened the door, I froze. Torn dog toys were scattered across the floor, while the bookshelves were filled with dog food and chew toys.

A huge dog bed sat in the corner, embroidered with the words "Rex's Home".

My bedroom had become Rex's room.

My eyes fell on the corner of the room, where I spotted a stuffed bunny. One of its ears had been bitten down to half its original length. Cotton stuffing had been pulled out of its belly and tossed beside the dog bed.

Ms. Watson, the orphanage director, had given it to me the day the Scotts arrived to take me away. She'd made it herself, just for me. She'd embroidered into one of the ears the words "Izzy's Bunny".

She told me that whenever I looked at the bunny, it would be as if she were still by my side. If I ever felt hurt or wronged, I could tell the bunny about it.

When I was first brought back to the Scott residence, everything felt foreign to me. They were all ridiculously expensive—and nothing belonged to me.

The bunny was the only thing that was truly mine. Whenever I hid in my room to cry after being bullied or wronged, I would hug the bunny and pretend that Ms. Watson was with me.

But now, it was no different from a piece of trash.

Behind me, Tina said softly, "Sorry about this, Isabel. After you got locked up, the room sat empty for so long. Rex needed more space to move around, so I..."

My brothers said they hadn't expected me to get out of prison early. They would start changing the room back tomorrow, so I would just have to make do for one night.

I crouched down and picked up the bunny. I stuffed the cotton back into its belly.

"You don't need to change it back," I said.

I knew perfectly well that I was leaving. I wouldn't be here "tomorrow".

Ashton's expression hardened. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Preston Scott, my third-oldest brother, sneered. "After almost seven years, you still haven't changed that nasty temper of yours, huh?"

Ashton took a deep breath and snapped, "Tina has already prepared a guest room for you! Why are you still throwing a fit?"

Tina tugged on Ashton's arm and gently tried to calm him down. "Don't be mad at her… It's my fault."

She flashed me a smile. "The guest room is on the second floor. I just cleaned it up a couple of days ago. Go take a shower, Isabel. We're having a party tonight to welcome you home.

"Put on the dress I prepared for you. We'll have a proper celebration tonight."

Clutching the ruined bunny, I walked into the guest room.

The moment I saw the neatly folded outfit lying on the bed, I stiffened. It was a gray-colored maid's uniform, complete with a gold-colored dog tag that matched the collar around my neck.

On the day of my funeral, the sky was a beautiful shade of blue, and there was no breeze. My brothers and Nathan sat before my grave. White chrysanthemums covered the ground, and my name, Isabel Scott, was engraved on the gravestone.Dalton placed the mended stuffed bunny in front of the gravestone. He'd spent the entire night stitching it back together, carefully stuffing the cotton back inside and sewing its chewed-up ear back on. He had retraced the words "Izzy's Bunny" with new embroidery thread."Here you go," he said quietly. "I didn't keep it safe for you, but I've mended it for you now."Beside him, Preston was clutching the pair of racing gloves. He'd always thought Tina had bought them. Now he knew that I had earned them by working a part-time job for three months. He wanted to say something. He opened his mouth several times, but not a single word came out.Ashton sat at the very front, her back perfectly stiff and straight, looking like a statue. He stared at the name

Dalton closed the diary. Ashton stood motionless, the muscles in his face twitching. Preston crouched on the floor, both hands clasped over his head.Nathan leaned against the wall. His face was completely expressionless, but blood had splattered down his chest, soaking into his shirt. He didn't know why, but it felt as though his heart had been torn apart, and he couldn't stop coughing up blood. At the same time, all three brothers doubled over. The pain that shot through their hearts intensified. It was as though someone were ripping their hearts straight out of their chests.Ashton's knees slammed into the floor with a dull thud. He braced himself against the floor, lifted his head, and stared at Tina, who was standing at the foot of the stairs.Blood spilled from his mouth. "You killed my sister."Tina dropped to her knees with a thud and crawled over to Ashton, clutching his leg desperately."That's not what happened, Ashton! I was just afraid you wouldn't want me anymore! I

The car hadn't even come to a complete stop when Preston flung the door open and stormed into the house.Tina was sitting on the couch in the living room, looking at her phone. Hearing the commotion, she looked up with her usual sweet smile."You guys are home!"Preston snatched her phone from her hand and threw it onto the floor. The screen shattered."Did you set Isabel up back then?"Tina froze for a moment, then her eyes immediately reddened. "What are you talking about, Preston? I don't understand..."Ashton and Dalton walked in, with Nathan following behind them. Ashton stood in front of her, staring down at her as he spoke, his voice clear and sharp."Christy Fuller has confessed everything."For a moment, Tina turned pale. Immediately, tears spilled down her cheeks."Ashton... I know what you're talking about..."She dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms around Ashton's leg."I was wrong, but I was genuinely scared… You guys had only just brought Isabel back home

In the interrogation room at the police station, Ashton, Dalton, and Preston sat in a row, with Nathan at the far end next to them. The detective sitting across from them opened a folder and pushed a stack of documents across the table."During our recent investigation into an insurance fraud case, we found clues that led us to Christy Fuller, the victim in that school poisoning case back then."He pulled out a medical examination report. "According to the medical report at the time, Christy suffered severe liver and kidney damage from the poisoning and would need to be on medication for the rest of her life. Based on that diagnosis, she filed a massive disability claim with the insurance company."But during her medical examination last month..."He turned the report around and pointed to the figures."All of her organs are fully functioning. She suffered no lasting effects from the poisoning whatsoever. The medical report and disability claim had been forged."Ashton took the

Everyone froze.Ashton was the first to speak. "Froze to death? It's August! It's 95 degrees outside, and you're telling me she froze to death?"The doctor spread out the report and pointed to the rows of data."The deceased's core body temperature was only 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The extensive frostbite on her extremities is consistent with exposure to subzero temperatures for at least four to five hours."He turned to the next page."As for the wounds on her body, they were not inflicted as a form of self-harm. She was using her own blood to keep herself warm."The hallway fell silent for a moment."What does that mean?" Dalton's voice tightened. The doctor pointed to the wound analysis in the report. "The wound on her wrist wasn't caused by horizontal or vertical cuts. It was caused by repeated friction."She pressed her wrist against the edge of a hard object and rubbed it back and forth, scraping the skin and flesh open to make it bleed, then smeared the blood over her bod

Even before James had stopped screaming, Nathan was already bounding up the stairs. He kicked the door to the guest bedroom out of his way and froze when he saw the curled-up figure on the bed.Blood had soaked into the bed. He saw the blackened lips and the stuffed bunny held close to the chest.Ashton rushed in right behind Nathan. He slammed into the doorframe and nearly collapsed to his knees, his legs going weak.Dalton pushed past everyone and threw himself by the bed. He checked for a breath and felt for a pulse.Nothing.There was nothing. He launched into a frenzy, placing his hands over my chest and starting CPR while shouting, "Call an ambulance!"Preston stood in the doorway. It took him three tries to just press the numbers, and his voice shook so badly he could barely give the address to the dispatcher. When the ambulance arrived, Dalton was still performing CPR. His palms slammed against my chest, his sweat dripping from his forehead onto my face. The paramedics
