Chapter 4

Author: Candice Rowan
Adrian brought me to the infirmary.

He furrowed his brows, his expression pained. “Your body is still weakened from the silver exposure, and the wolfsbane has only aggravated your condition. There’s nothing more I can do for you...”

My face showed no emotion.

Since learning that I had been poisoned with aconite for the last seven years, I knew death would claim me sooner or later.

In those two days I was in the infirmary, Kieran never once visited.

Sage came to me and told me that Ronan had fallen ill. Kieran and Celeste had been keeping near him the whole time.

I nodded, acknowledging the news.

As I got out of bed, my knees buckled, and Sage caught me. “Alpha Voss has given orders that you should stay put here. He will come for you in time.”

I curled my lips.

“I just wish to see Moonlight.”

Moonlight was the horse I raised, my faithful companion who had been with me through everything and my move to the Frostfang Pack. When she grew too frail to run, Kieran had settled her into a stable.

Sage wanted to fetch Adrian to go with me, but I stopped her.

“I won’t be going home. Just take the things I had you pack and deliver them to my mother.

“You should leave as well. You don’t need to stay with me.”

Sage’s tears spilled from her eyes.

“Luna, I don’t want to go. Alpha Voss loves you. He’s just too mad to recognize that. Once he cools down, he’ll come back for you.”

I smiled without a word.

There was a time when I believed in that so deeply that I learned to keep myself in check, content to remain at his side in silence.

However, I couldn’t care less anymore.

I made my way to the table at a slow pace, each step an agonizing struggle.

Moonlight had lost her sight, but she still recognized the sound of my voice.

I gently stroked her head, and she nuzzled her snout softly against my shoulder.

Sitting on the floor, I put my weight against Moonlight and felt her breathing grow shallow.

I started to reminisce about the good old days when Moonlight often carried me across finish lines, claiming victory after victory.

My wolf gradually faded into nothingness.

Closing my eyes, I kept my arms around Moonlight’s neck.

…

Inside Celeste’s quarters, Ronan drank the potion and slowly got better.

Kieran sat on the couch, rubbing his temples wearily.

Celeste was thoughtful enough to offer him a glass of water. “Still upset about Raina?”

Kieran remained silent, but Celeste was always great at reading the room. She smiled and added. “Raina’s been spoiled rotten by her family. I don’t blame her.

“She’s grown up a lot these years. Give her a bit of time, and she’ll be back.”

Kieran furrowed his brows.

For some reason, he couldn’t shake off an uneasy feeling.

He reached for his hip.

Kieran had carried the same wolf fang as mine on him for years.

However, it struck him now that the wolf fang had split in half.

Kieran grimaced while getting up. “I’m going to bring her back.”

Just then, Cael stumbled into the room, his face pale.

“Alpha, we’ve cleared up the incident with the messenger raven. Raina had nothing to do with it.”

Kieran broke into a smile. The only thing on his mind was to fetch me and make it up to me.

As he stepped out, Cael came in his way.

Kieran frowned. “Whatever it is, it can wait. I need to get to Raina now.”

Cael’s voice shook.

“There’s no bringing her back, Alpha.

“Raina… She’s dead.”

Kieran drove to the infirmary, brought Raina’s body to the border, and handed her over to Magnus. Alaric balled his fists, tempted to attack Kieran once more, but Magnus held him back. Without another word, they swiftly departed. Kieran stood there, watching their receding silhouettes with a heavy feeling. He had conquered countless battlefields across the North. Yet, in the end, he had no say in his own mate’s final rest. However, he wished not to start a war with Raina’s pack, so he had no choice but to let her family take her away. His mind wandered back to the time Raina was still alive. Once vibrant and fierce, Raina had ridden Moonlight across open grassland. For him, she had tucked away her sharp edges, forcing herself to drink the bitter aconite potion day after day, all the while naively hoping they might one day have pups of their own.At the party, Raina was framed for poisoning and accused of betraying the Frostfang Pack. Then, she was locked away in a silve

As the Gamma guards hauled Celeste out of the pack’s territory, her anguished cries disappeared into the distance. Kieran remained where he was, lost in memories of the beautiful moments he and Raina had shared. Tears slipped down his cheeks before he knew it. A short while later, heavy footsteps came from outside. Cael barged into the room and looked at Kieran hesitantly. “Alpha… Raina’s parents are here.” Drying his tears, Kieran pulled himself together to meet Raina’s parents. At the border, Raina’s father, Magnus, and her brother, Alaric, stood there, their expressions grim. Spotting Kieran, they made their intentions clear. “I’m here to bring my daughter home.” Kieran refused his request right away. “Raina is my mate. She belongs here.” Magnus’ eyes narrowed chillingly. “Alpha Voss, so you were aware that Raina was your mate. Why did you allow another she-wolf to kill her?” Kieran had no words. Hanging his head low, Kieran repeated himself. “Raina is my m

Kieran rushed to Celeste’s quarters. The door stood ajar. Before he could raise his hand and push it open, the voices inside drifted through. Celeste sat across from a friend, Layla, in the room. Dropping her ladylike and restrained façade, she sounded rather smug. “Raina’s finally dead. Now, there’s nothing standing between me and the Luna position.” Layla had some reservations. She murmured, “Aren’t you worried the Alpha might discover what you’ve done?”Celeste chuckled, her voice certain. “Kieran has a lot of trust in me. I told him Raina asked to be put in the silver cell, and he never suspected a thing. He thinks I’d never lie to him.” Layla gasped in admiration. “You’re amazing, Celeste.” Celeste sneered. “Raina even tried to turn my own pups against me. But what good did all her kindness do? Ronan helped me set her up anyway. He swore up and down that she’d poisoned me with wolfsbane.” Recalling the events of the party, Layla asked in confusion, “But you had wo

Kieran rushed to the stables to find Raina lying motionlessly against Moonlight. “Raina!” Taking strides ahead, Kieran bent over to touch her cheek. Feeling her icy cold skin beneath his fingertips, he jerked his hand back. He shakily scooped her into his arms.“Call Adrian! Now!” Kieran cradled Raina against his chest, a scream ripping from his throat. Standing nearby, Cael opened his mouth. “Alpha, Adrian has been here… Raina is dead.” Kieran, his eyes bloodshot, was beyond listening to reason. With Raina in his arms, Kieran bolted toward the infirmary and gently laid her down on the bed. It didn’t take Adrian long to arrive and run a quick check on Raina. “Save her.” Kieran’s voice was husky. His presence as the Alpha squeezed the air out of the room. “Alpha Voss, Raina is dead. “She was exposed to aconite for years, which had already weakened her wolf. The silver and wolfsbane piled on the damage. Even the best potion can’t bring her back.” Kieran’s eye

By the time I came to, I was back in my own room. Kieran stood by the bed, staring at me with a frown. “Raina, Celeste told me that you volunteered to reflect in the silver holding cell. Why?” The silver had ravaged me from inside out. For a moment, I couldn’t find the voice to speak. Met with my silence, Kieran scowled harder, his eyes reflecting displeasure. “Raina, you are always so headstrong. I can’t believe you put your health at risk out of spite this time. If not for Celeste, the silver would’ve killed you. You should be grateful to her!” He then walked away. Adrian handed me a healing potion. “You have lost the ability to heal. You’ll need this.” I nodded. He didn’t have to say it. I could already feel my wolf getting weaker by the day and slipping away by the minute. That night, Kieran held a birthday party for Celeste. I arrived just in time for Kieran to present her with a gown. That was the very gift he had promised me after his victory on the battlefie
