Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Three Two
On the day I returned to the country, my boyfriend, Sean Hoult, threw me a welcome home party. However, my old friends all eyed me with looks of dissatisfaction and resentment as they made sarcastic comments.

Someone remarked, "I'm amazed. Who would've thought that the person who up and left would actually be shameless enough to come back?"

The others chimed in, expressing their agreement.

"I know, right? She's so shameless."

When I left the country, Sean had been gravely ill with barely any hope of survival, and his business was in dire straits.

In just two years, he made a miraculous recovery, and even his business had soared to new heights.

However, Sean knew why I left the country.

I turned toward him, but he remained quiet, showing no intention of standing up for me.

All of a sudden, a woman named Cynthia Tucker picked up her wine glass and stood up. When I saw her face, I was momentarily stunned.

She shared an uncanny resemblance to me, but the words that came out of her mouth were filled with malice.

"Daphne, I'm dying to know if you don't get nightmares from the guilt of abandoning your boyfriend for the sake of your career."

Everyone fell silent, and Sean remained quiet still. Gripping my glass, I replied, "Are you my friend or Sean's, Ms. Tucker? Why are you trying to interfere with our private matter?"

Cynthia was startled, her face turning a little pale. She retorted, "It doesn't matter who I am. Do you know what Sean had to go through for the last two years?"

The more she spoke, the angrier she became. She lifted her hand and threw the wine in her glass at my face.

Some of the people around us chuckled, while others said I deserved what I got.

I was a mess. The wine kept dripping down my face. Even my hands shook as I felt an overwhelming sense of rage and humiliation.

I raised my glass too, but Sean, who had been silent the whole time, stopped me. He also instinctively shielded Cynthia behind him.

"Don't push it, Daphne!"

I froze immediately. It was impossible for me to ignore the reproachful tone of his voice. I hadn't even done anything. I was the one who had been criticized and had wine splashed onto my face.

In the past, whenever someone said anything negative about me, Sean would get so upset that he would flip the table over and demand that the person apologize to me.

Yet, this time, he merely stood aside and watched as someone else insulted me. He even expressed his concern for someone I didn't even know.

What was his relationship with Cynthia?

Seemingly realizing that he had overreacted, Sean hastily added, "Daphne, what I meant is, you just got back. Don't be upset because of someone else. I'll accompany you upstairs to get changed, okay?"

Sean dragged me off. Once we got into the elevator, he held me tightly.

"It's been two years since we last met, Daphne. I missed you so, so much. I really did."

He explained to me that Cynthia was a medical assistant who had helped him a lot the last two years, so he kind of owed her.

His explanation felt a bit off to me, but the suspicion and humiliation I felt melted away as he held me in his arms.

Having been apart for two years, I was consumed with my longing for him. I had missed him very much too.

Sean and I had known each other for 27 years. We were childhood sweethearts and had been in a relationship for ten years now. We were inseparable from each other.

Nevertheless, when I was alone in the room, I kept thinking about the way Sean had protected Cynthia earlier.

The nagging feeling in the back of my mind intensified when I went to the bathroom downstairs to touch up my makeup.

An indescribable stench lingered in the air.

Cynthia was leaning against the sink, using a tissue to wipe the handprints off the mirror.

Her makeup was smudged. Tears clung to the corners of her eyes, and there were used tissues scattered on the floor as well.

Mr. Hoult paused briefly before he started hitting Sean even harder.Sean turned as pale as a ghost. He couldn't stop shaking."Mr. Hoult, I don't care if you want to teach your son a lesson. Even if you hit him to death right here, right now, I won't say a single word."Sean's eyes filled with a look of immense horror before he stumbled to the floor."Daphne…"I spotted a tear hanging from the corner of his eye.At the end of the day, Mr. Hoult did care about Sean. He tried to say something, but Dad stopped him."Edgar, make sure this punk never shows his face in front of my daughter again, or our friendship ends now. I'll do everything within my power to make your lives a living hell."Dad and Mr. Hoult had been friends for decades now, but he was willing to go this far for my sake.It looked like Mr. Hoult had more to say, but in the end, he didn't say anything. He simply apologized to me before taking Sean away.As I stared at the closed door, my tears fell. Someone I h

Just like that, two years' worth of constant effort and labor, those seemingly never-ending days and nights of exhaustion, had been reduced to a joke.I touched my face, instantly drenching my palm with tears. With a sarcastic smirk, I asked Sean, "So? Is that your excuse for cheating on me?"Sean lowered his head, his face turning a little pale. He said, "Cynthia looks so much like you. Plus, the moment I met her, I started getting better. That made me wonder if it was fate."That only made me feel even more scornful. It took an immeasurable amount of dedication and sacrifice to bring about significant progress in the field of medicine, but in Sean's eyes, it was merely a result of the so-called plot of a romance novel.Sean started getting agitated again. He tried to take my hand as he continued, "In the story, your life became a tragedy because you kept trying to pick on Cynthia. I didn't want you to end up like that. That's why I kept trying to stop you."But Daphne, I get i

Cynthia came charging over to us with tear-filled eyes. What a strange sight it had to be to see Sean holding onto me while she held onto him."She doesn't love you anymore, Sean. I don't want to break up with you, either. Haven't we had a happy relationship for the last two years? We love each other!" Cynthia declared. My heart was gripped with sorrow. Two years?I had been out of the country for two years, and their relationship had gone on for two years as well.It turned out that the duration of a relationship had no impact on how strong it was. It took over two decades to build up the foundation of our relationship, but two years was enough time to turn it into ruins.Yet, Sean, who used to constantly worry that I would bully Cynthia, flung her hand off him and scoffed cruelly."We love each other, you say? Who do you think you are? I only paid a bit more attention to you because you look like Daphne. "You're not someone I love. At most, you're just a toy that I've mista

"I don't care about all of that," Sean declared. His eyes reddened, and his voice trembled as he continued, "Did you witness those things yourself?"Immediately, I figured out what he was referring to—his intimate acts with Cynthia.I nodded curtly in response, and all the blood drained out of his face."I was wrong, Daphne. I now realize just how big of a mistake I've been making all along. I'm the one who can't be without you," Sean declared. My expression remained indifferent as I replied, "Not everyone gets to be forgiven just because they recognize the error in their ways. I don't even want to look at you."Sean swayed on his feet. He didn't seem to expect me to respond like that.Even as I headed back to my place, I heard him mumbling to himself, "It's fine. Everything's fine. You can't leave me. You'll definitely come back to me."Considering the state of our relationship now, I couldn't fathom why he was so convinced of that.Either way, it felt like Sean was engrossed

Various variations of the story about me abandoning Sean when he was sick started spreading across the internet.Soon, someone tracked down my identity and unearthed my information. They left scathing remarks and insults on the official websites of both the hospital and my family's company. They even questioned my academic credentials and claimed I was incompetent as a doctor. My reputation took a nosedive, and all of my patients asked to be assigned to someone else.Considering how rapidly the news spread, it was obvious that someone was fanning the flames behind the scenes.I took Sean's number out of my blocked contacts and called him. He didn't seem surprised at all to hear from me."Are you the one behind this?" I questioned. After a brief silence, Sean replied, "I simply didn't object to it."I thought my heart had grown numb by now, but it ached in pain anyway. I was so done with myself. I thought I would've been able to stop feeling hurt by now."Sean, don't you feel an

Cynthia cried as she spoke. She even raised her hand to slap me, but Sean stopped her before the slap landed. He had a pained expression, though I couldn't tell whom his heart ached for.Gently rubbing her hand, Sean said, "Don't be mad. I know you're doing it for my sake."His words felt like needles stabbing me in the heart. To help him with his medical condition, I had gone abroad for two years. Even when I was exhausted in every way possible, I dared not take a break. The immense pressure I felt took a toll on my mental health and left irreversible damage on me.Resisting the urge to cry, I asked, "Sean, do you also think I owe you?"Sean stiffened, but he ignored me and coaxed Cynthia into heading to the car first. In spite of her reluctance, she left as instructed.Sean and I were once lovers, but now, there was nothing left for us to say to each other."Daphne, Cynthia works at that hospital. Must you go there too? She… won't be happy if you're her colleague. Can't you go
