Chapter 2

Author: Hopefully
One day, as Kevin once again brought me coffee, I said, "Kevin, I'm actually not—"

"Yes, yes, I know," he cuts me off. "You're just a normal intern. I was already getting a cup for myself, so it wasn't any bother to get you one at the same time. Don't overthink it, yeah?"

Despite his words, his eyes were clearly saying, "I know, you want to keep a low profile."

I had a mental breakdown upon seeing that. I wasn't actually trying to be humble—I genuinely wasn't who he thought I was!

Meanwhile, George Patman, Team B's leader, seemed to have it out for the other Michael Lane. Every day, he would be harassing Michael over something or another. Either he would reject Michael's proposal and have him redo it, or he would insist on Michael editing the data sheets, over and over again.

There was even once he shouted loud enough for everyone to hear. "Some people think that they're some rich heir just because they're wearing an expensive watch! Clearly, they don't know their place in this world!"

It couldn't have been any more obvious who he was referring to. Everybody knew he was talking about Michael.

The next day, Michael came to work wearing a new watch—a limited edition green Rolex.

The whole company was buzzing.

"Look at him! Even after being insulted, he still wore such an expensive watch to work! Is there something wrong with him?"

"Right? You know how it is. The more one lacks something, the more they want to pretend like they have it all."

"I bet his watch is fake. A high-quality one, but a fake nevertheless."

They weren't talking too loudly, but it was just enough that Michael could hear them.

I glanced at him, noting how he sat at his desk with his back ramrod straight. His face was blank as he switched on his computer and got to work.

…

That afternoon, I was heating up my lunch in the pantry when Michael entered. Our eyes met, and the atmosphere instantly became a little awkward.

After a few seconds, he dropped his gaze and began filling his mug with water.

I hesitated briefly before saying, "Your… Uh, your new watch is quite nice."

He paused and lifted his head to look at me, revealing the slightly surprised expression on his face.

"Thank you."

Following that, he headed for the door with his mug. Upon reaching the doorway, he stopped to turn back and say, "Your Simple bag is quite nice too."

That had me freezing on the spot in surprise, my lunch momentarily forgotten in my hands.

Later that afternoon, George began giving Michael a hard time again.

"Michael Lane, get your ass over here!"

Immediately, everyone's attention was on them.

I looked over as well to see George holding a document, his entire face flushed a bright red.

Michael walked over.

"What's going on with this client analysis report? The figures on the third page are inconsistent with the ones on the tenth. Did you even double-check them?"

"I did. Page three shows the quarterly figures, while page ten shows the cumulative figures. They're based on different reporting criteria, which I noted in the appendix."

"You noted it in the appendix? That's your excuse?" George slammed the document on the table. "You're just an intern, so you do what I tell you to do! Who gave you permission to change the reporting criteria on your own?"

"I didn't change it. I simply—"

"You simply, what? Who do you think you are?"

The moment those words left George's lips, the entire office fell silent.

Everybody knew what he meant by that last question.

Michael stood before George, his lips pursed into a thin line. After over a dozen seconds, he finally spoke, "I understand. This was my mistake, so I'll redo it."

Then, he took the document and returned to his desk.

Clicking his tongue, Louis leaned over to whisper to me, "Serves him right. That's what he gets for trying to be what he's not."

An abrupt wave of nausea seized me.

…

The next morning, I stepped into the office building and immediately sensed that something was off.

The male receptionist now sported a clean shave and had fixed his hair with wax. Besides that, our director, who normally didn't bother with a tie, had put on one today.

"What's going on?" I asked the person next to me softly.

"Supposedly, a big shot is coming today."

"Oh."

I didn't give the matter much thought and simply headed to my desk.

Surprisingly, Kevin had actually come in early today, which he had never done before. At that moment, he was straightening his tie in the mirror.

"Kevin, what's the special occasion?"

Kevin appeared surprised at my question. "Don't you know?"

When I shook my head, Louis came over and uttered lowly, "The chairman is coming in for an inspection today. Didn't he tell you that?"

My heart skipped a beat at the news. The chairman? As in, the other Michael's father?

After a few seconds, I suddenly laughed.Michael raised a brow at me. "What are you laughing at?""I'm just wondering whether we were the same person in our past lives.""What do you mean?"I began ticking the facts off with my fingers. "Well, we share the same name, started our internship on the same day at the same company, were both assumed to be who we weren't, and went through similar experiences. Don't you think this is all a little too coincidental?""Then, who do you think has it worse between us?""Of course, that would be me," I answered. "When they were insulting you, at least they said you bought high-quality imitations. When it came to me, they accused me of acting like a pretty boy to be a boy toy for a rich woman."A bubble of laughter burst from Michael's lips."That's true. Your 'crimes' were much more serious than mine."I joined in the laughter, but then I suddenly recalled something."By the way, back when you complimented me on my Simple bag, did you alre

The clicking of Mom's high heels faded into the distance before cutting off as the elevator doors shut behind her.Everyone breathed a simultaneous sigh of relief at that, the past few minutes having felt like a century to them.Helplessness filled Kevin's face as he started hoarsely, "Michael, I'm sorry. I didn't know that your mother was—""Kevin," I cut him off. "My chat history with you about the report hasn't been deleted yet. Would you like to take a look at it?"He opened his mouth, yet he couldn't find the words to speak."You don't have to apologize to me. You just need to clarify one thing—was I the one who made a mistake, or did you give the wrong figures?"An indeterminate amount of time passed before he finally answered, "Maybe I accidentally sent the wrong thing. Those figures were from last year, which I failed to notice…"Upon hearing that, I massaged my temples. The one thing I had been most worried about happening had still happened. When it came to the workp

As I stood there, staring at the mockery on Kevin's face and listening to the muffled snickers of my colleagues, I could feel my blood surging through my veins.Oh, no… It was all over now…When the woman simply laughed, Kevin lost all patience. "Where's security? Who let her in here? Security!""Mr. Mallor," someone called out from the end of the corridor, causing the words to die in Kevin's throat. As one, everyone turned to look, only to see Mr. Lane hurrying over. To their shock, he approached the woman, stopped in front of her, and then greeted her respectfully. In a tone filled with respect, he said, "Mrs. Lane, why didn't you tell me that you were returning to the country? I would've arranged everything for you."The smile on Kevin's face froze, while everyone else wore stunned expressions. After all, they had never seen Mr. Lane acting like that before. However, the woman merely uttered indifferently, "Mr. Lane, your employees certainly are opinionated. They seem to thin

The group chat was in an uproar over the photos."I told you he wasn't as simple as he seemed. That Simple bag really was part of an act. By pretending that he wanted to keep a low profile, everyone would think that he was the chairman's son. However, now that the real son has been revealed, his lie has been exposed. That's why he's so anxious and latched onto a rich woman over the weekend!""Tsk, tsk! Men these days really would do anything to climb up the social ladder.""So the Simple bag was a deliberate play? All to catch the interest of a wealthy woman?""Right on! Play the pretty boy, find your next meal ticket, rinse and repeat.""Remember how he was on his first day here? Turns out, that innocence was all just an act!""As expected, it's easy for a young, handsome man to latch onto a rich woman…"My hands began to shake.Rumors were terrifying in that once they started, they would spread endlessly like a virus, regardless of whether they were true or not. Before I cou

Michael's words only made me feel even more upset."But if I had stepped forward earlier and told them the truth, you probably wouldn't have been scolded so badly."He answered calmly, "My scolding had nothing to do with you. George came after me because he thought I was too flashy and liked to show off, that I didn't fit in. He would've found other reasons to berate me even without you.""Aren't you mad? You were wronged, excluded, and publicly humiliated. Don't you feel even the slightest bit angry?"For a moment, he was silent before he replied indifferently, "Well, I'm just an intern. Isn't it normal for an intern to be scolded?"I couldn't help but laugh at that.…After I returned home that night, Mom called me."Mikey, I'm coming back to the country next week. What gifts would you like?"I lay sprawled across the couch, feeling utterly drained. "Nothing.""Really? I thought you quite liked the watch I bought you last time?""Really. Just don't bring back yet another s

"Kevin, about my desk…""Oh, that." Kevin didn't even bother raising his head when he spoke to me. "Your original spot has good lighting, so I plan on leaving it for the new intern. Your new spot is over there."Instead of saying anything, I simply headed to my new desk. It was up against the wall, which meant that my back would be to everyone. That wasn't so bad. At least I would get some peace and quiet.I glanced around, noting how every member of Team A had their head bowed as they worked on their tasks. Not a single one paid me any attention. It was a stark contrast to how they had treated me last week. Previously, Louis would come over and share his snacks with me. Walter Cox would ask whether I had any problems adapting to the company's system, while Kevin would often pat my shoulder encouragingly. As for Winnie, her response was even more drastic, as it had been three whole days since she last sought me out. When I ran into her yesterday, she had kept her head bowed low
