Chapter 3

Author: Hopefully
Just then, the elevator chimed, causing everyone to instantly jump out of their seats and stand straight.

Subsequently, a man in his 50s strode out of the elevator. He had an angular face and salt-and-pepper hair. Dressed in a charcoal gray suit, he exuded an air of authority, especially since a group of five people was following behind him.

"Good morning, Mr. Lane!" everyone greeted him simultaneously.

The chairman, Marty Lane, nodded in response.

Kevin approached him with a wide smile. "You're here, sir. Allow me to give you a tour of our office—"

"No need," Mr. Lane interrupted him. "I'm here to see my son."

Silence descended upon the office as everyone eyed me from the corner of their eyes.

I had no idea why, but my palms were damp with sweat even though I technically hadn't done anything wrong.

The smile on Kevin's face brightened further. "Oh, your son is on our team. He's so incredibly outstanding that our team—"

"Your team?" Mr. Lane shot him a strange look.

Kevin paused in surprise.

"At the very least, I still know what team my son is on."

With that, Mr. Lane began to stride forward.

Everyone watched with bated breath.

Louis tugged on my sleeve excitedly. "The chairman is coming toward you!"

I kept silent.

Mr. Lane walked over to me, then passed right by me without any hesitation. As everyone stared in wide-eyed shock, he came to a stop at the desk in the furthest corner of Team B's side of the room.

That desk was none other than Michael's.

"Where's Michael?" Mr. Lane asked his assistant.

After checking his phone, the assistant replied, "Mr. Lane, Mr. Michael says that he's in the washroom and will be back in a moment."

He had barely finished speaking when the door to the washroom opened.

Michael stepped out, but the moment he spotted Mr. Lane, an obvious look of surprise crossed his face.

"Dad?" He furrowed his brows. "What are you doing here? Didn't we agree that you wouldn't seek me out in the company?"

The word "Dad" seemed to go off in the office like a bomb.

I watched as the smile on Kevin's face froze before slowly cracking. Meanwhile, Louis' eyes widened to the size of dinner plates as his mouth dropped open in astonishment.

As for George, who was holding a mug, he jerked violently, causing the liquid to slosh out.

The entire office was so silent that only the humming of the air-conditioning could be heard.

The instant Mr. Lane laid eyes on Michael, the stern look on his face vanished. What replaced it was the exasperation of a father who had been told off by his son.

"I just wanted to come and see how you were doing. It's not like I'm bothering you."

"Your very presence here is already a bother," Michael retorted indifferently. "I already told you that I wanted to depend on my own capabilities, so could you not come here?"

"Alright, alright!" Mr. Lane threw his hands up in surrender. "I'll leave right away! Happy now?"

With that, he turned to leave, only to suddenly halt in his tracks. Looking over at a deathly pale George, he asked, "You're the team leader for Team B?"

George's lips quivered. "Y-Yes, Mr. Lane."

"My son is working as an intern on your team. How has his performance been?"

If possible, George paled even further, and when he spoke, even his voice was trembling. "N-Not bad. Michael is an outstanding young man with strong capabilities, so our entire team really likes him…"

Michael stood nearby, not saying a word.

Mr. Lane nodded. "That's good to hear. Thank you for looking after him."

The second the elevator doors shut, George's legs gave out. He was only able to steady himself by grabbing the nearby desk.

The rest of the office erupted into chaos.

"Oh, my! So it's actually him!"

"Oh, no! We made the wrong assumption!"

"So his dad's the chairman? Then, why didn't he say anything when George was tearing into him the other day?"

"If he had spoken up, that would've revealed his real identity! He was just genuinely trying to keep a low profile, okay?"

"That's right! What's wrong with him wearing a Rolex? His dad's the chairman of the company, so he can wear whatever he likes!"

Those who had once looked down on Michael were now fighting each other to get closer to him.

"Michael, are you thirsty? Want me to get you some water?"

"Michael, let me help you edit that report. You just rest, okay?"

"Michael, wanna have lunch together? I know of this new restaurant that serves great food…"

As I watched this all happen, I suddenly found myself lost in a daze.

Just yesterday, these people had been insulting him behind his back and delighting over his misfortune. Now, however, their attitudes had taken a 180-degree turn. It was honestly shocking how quickly they changed their behavior toward him.

From then on, the tides turned.

When I arrived at my desk the next morning, I found it to be completely empty. A brief search revealed that my computer had been shifted to the desk in the furthest corner of the room.

After a few seconds, I suddenly laughed.Michael raised a brow at me. "What are you laughing at?""I'm just wondering whether we were the same person in our past lives.""What do you mean?"I began ticking the facts off with my fingers. "Well, we share the same name, started our internship on the same day at the same company, were both assumed to be who we weren't, and went through similar experiences. Don't you think this is all a little too coincidental?""Then, who do you think has it worse between us?""Of course, that would be me," I answered. "When they were insulting you, at least they said you bought high-quality imitations. When it came to me, they accused me of acting like a pretty boy to be a boy toy for a rich woman."A bubble of laughter burst from Michael's lips."That's true. Your 'crimes' were much more serious than mine."I joined in the laughter, but then I suddenly recalled something."By the way, back when you complimented me on my Simple bag, did you alre

The clicking of Mom's high heels faded into the distance before cutting off as the elevator doors shut behind her.Everyone breathed a simultaneous sigh of relief at that, the past few minutes having felt like a century to them.Helplessness filled Kevin's face as he started hoarsely, "Michael, I'm sorry. I didn't know that your mother was—""Kevin," I cut him off. "My chat history with you about the report hasn't been deleted yet. Would you like to take a look at it?"He opened his mouth, yet he couldn't find the words to speak."You don't have to apologize to me. You just need to clarify one thing—was I the one who made a mistake, or did you give the wrong figures?"An indeterminate amount of time passed before he finally answered, "Maybe I accidentally sent the wrong thing. Those figures were from last year, which I failed to notice…"Upon hearing that, I massaged my temples. The one thing I had been most worried about happening had still happened. When it came to the workp

As I stood there, staring at the mockery on Kevin's face and listening to the muffled snickers of my colleagues, I could feel my blood surging through my veins.Oh, no… It was all over now…When the woman simply laughed, Kevin lost all patience. "Where's security? Who let her in here? Security!""Mr. Mallor," someone called out from the end of the corridor, causing the words to die in Kevin's throat. As one, everyone turned to look, only to see Mr. Lane hurrying over. To their shock, he approached the woman, stopped in front of her, and then greeted her respectfully. In a tone filled with respect, he said, "Mrs. Lane, why didn't you tell me that you were returning to the country? I would've arranged everything for you."The smile on Kevin's face froze, while everyone else wore stunned expressions. After all, they had never seen Mr. Lane acting like that before. However, the woman merely uttered indifferently, "Mr. Lane, your employees certainly are opinionated. They seem to thin

The group chat was in an uproar over the photos."I told you he wasn't as simple as he seemed. That Simple bag really was part of an act. By pretending that he wanted to keep a low profile, everyone would think that he was the chairman's son. However, now that the real son has been revealed, his lie has been exposed. That's why he's so anxious and latched onto a rich woman over the weekend!""Tsk, tsk! Men these days really would do anything to climb up the social ladder.""So the Simple bag was a deliberate play? All to catch the interest of a wealthy woman?""Right on! Play the pretty boy, find your next meal ticket, rinse and repeat.""Remember how he was on his first day here? Turns out, that innocence was all just an act!""As expected, it's easy for a young, handsome man to latch onto a rich woman…"My hands began to shake.Rumors were terrifying in that once they started, they would spread endlessly like a virus, regardless of whether they were true or not. Before I cou

Michael's words only made me feel even more upset."But if I had stepped forward earlier and told them the truth, you probably wouldn't have been scolded so badly."He answered calmly, "My scolding had nothing to do with you. George came after me because he thought I was too flashy and liked to show off, that I didn't fit in. He would've found other reasons to berate me even without you.""Aren't you mad? You were wronged, excluded, and publicly humiliated. Don't you feel even the slightest bit angry?"For a moment, he was silent before he replied indifferently, "Well, I'm just an intern. Isn't it normal for an intern to be scolded?"I couldn't help but laugh at that.…After I returned home that night, Mom called me."Mikey, I'm coming back to the country next week. What gifts would you like?"I lay sprawled across the couch, feeling utterly drained. "Nothing.""Really? I thought you quite liked the watch I bought you last time?""Really. Just don't bring back yet another s

"Kevin, about my desk…""Oh, that." Kevin didn't even bother raising his head when he spoke to me. "Your original spot has good lighting, so I plan on leaving it for the new intern. Your new spot is over there."Instead of saying anything, I simply headed to my new desk. It was up against the wall, which meant that my back would be to everyone. That wasn't so bad. At least I would get some peace and quiet.I glanced around, noting how every member of Team A had their head bowed as they worked on their tasks. Not a single one paid me any attention. It was a stark contrast to how they had treated me last week. Previously, Louis would come over and share his snacks with me. Walter Cox would ask whether I had any problems adapting to the company's system, while Kevin would often pat my shoulder encouragingly. As for Winnie, her response was even more drastic, as it had been three whole days since she last sought me out. When I ran into her yesterday, she had kept her head bowed low
