Chapter 8

Author: Flaming Grass
I drained every last cent of our family's savings and then risked my life by selling my blood three separate times on the black market just to fund Zachary's ticket to the city.

But when I presented the official paperwork to Zachary, all I got was a flat, emotionless word of gratitude that was delivered without a hint of a smile.

In time, he climbed the ranks with ease and became the factory manager. At the same time, I managed to join the factory on my own merit and earned an entry-level position.

Yet, despite all this, Zachary grew increasingly distant and cold toward me.

I felt like there was a monumental wall separating us, a barrier he had meticulously constructed himself. I spent years deluding myself that sheer hard work would let me breach that defense, only to finally realize that he had always intended to keep me locked out.

I was nothing more than a stepping stone to him—a necessary object to boost him out of his own deep mire. I was disposable, to be carelessly cast aw

Leon's voice was hushed and tender, as gentle as the moonlight streaming through the window at that moment. In time, we naturally became a couple. Leon refrained from asking any questions about my history, instead simply stating, "I'm only concerned with the person you are now, Professor Warner, and that's all that matters to me."In the end, we even got married and later welcomed Queenie Henderson, our beautiful daughter, who possessed Leon's signature smile. I thought time had already erased everything about Zachary from my life, leaving not even the faintest trace of a scar.It wasn't until one late afternoon, a decade and a half later, that everything changed. It was snowing so heavily that it seemed like the whole world was being smothered beneath it. I was driving my brand-new car—provided to me by my workplace—and enjoying the strong heat emanating from the car's heater, while Queenie's favorite nursery rhyme was playing softly on the radio.I was on my way to pick Leon

I had already decided to move, choosing a life in the countryside. I had made this choice willingly to get away from everything here and begin my life all over again. It was then that the police officer regarded me with faint sympathy, saying, "Mr. Smith has asked for you, Ms. Warner. He's been quite insistent about seeing you one last time. Do you intend to go see him?"I stopped what I was doing momentarily. I recalled his smiling face in the wheat field, dressed in a clean white shirt. It was quickly replaced by the memory of his determined handwriting, inscribing the word "mire" in his autobiography before my death in my past life.In the end, considering the fact that we had once been husband and wife, I nodded in assent. "I'll go see him."I was met by every worker's complicated gaze as I walked past the factory while following the police officer. They had only realized within the last few days that I, a totally unassuming worker in the factory, was the lawfully wedded wife

In that instant, the onlookers' retreat left a wide, empty area, effectively creating a zone of isolation around Juliana and me. The police officers were utterly shocked, but their response was lightning-fast. They immediately moved to firmly restrain Juliana.Juliana was so utterly panic-stricken that she stammered incoherently, "I-I'm innocent! I'm not a spy! I just studied abroad for a while! You have no right to use personal grudges to make such monstrous accusations against me, Serenity!"She was so distressed that she was nearly crying. She also kept trying to look toward Zachary, as if pleading for help.Zachary, despite being in dire straits himself, rushed to protect Juliana. "You've lost your mind, Serenity! You should come after me if you're upset—stop making these ridiculous, slanderous attacks against an innocent woman! You ought to know that Juliana's moral character far surpasses yours!"I let out a contemptuous snort and retorted, "You want to talk about morals no

In that instant, everyone in the corridor fell silent, as they were utterly rendered speechless by the sheer magnitude of my accusation.Zachary's face instantly drained of color as he yelled, "You've lost your mind, Serenity!"I ignored his yelling and looked directly at the police officers, saying, "I have the evidence."In an instant, the police officers' expressions hardened. The seriousness of such a situation left no room for carelessness. "Is everything you said true, Ms. Warner?"I nodded in assent. "It's absolutely true."Zachary was utterly frantic. He lunged forward to try and clamp a hand over my mouth, but one of the police officers instantly grabbed him and held him back.I gave a sidelong, contemptuous look at his contorted face, then led the police officers directly to the factory manager's office, where Zachary kept his incriminating ledgers. It was true that factory scrap was being resold, but the person responsible wasn't me—it was Brody Smith, Zachary's belo

I swiftly seized Zachary's wrist, holding it firm. "You'd better return my money to me, Zachary!"Zachary, in a fit of pique, took out 200 dollars from his pocket and hurled it at my face. "This is all I have! Take it or leave it!"Juliana, standing to the side, chimed in with a feigned, reproachful tone, "How could you report Zachary to the police over something so trivial, Ms. Warner?""You'd better shut that mouth of yours!" I then turned to the police officers, saying, "I've lost over 24 thousand dollars! I also intend to press charges against my husband, Zachary Smith, for having an affair with Juliana Ziegler!"That accusation of an illicit affair instantly wiped the color from both Zachary's and Juliana's faces. That specific charge, while perhaps not carrying any serious penalty in those days, was guaranteed to destroy their careers, reputations, and entire future.Zachary was utterly terrified. He hurriedly retrieved a stack of money from his wallet and thrust it at me, y
