Chapter 1

When Ernest Marino entered the room, I was in a daze as I stared at a clump of dark hair on my dresser.

It had fallen off my head while I was combing my hair. That was not the only thing. My skin was starting to turn an unhealthily pale shade, and my nails had become fragile and easily broken.

"Why are you in a daze again, Mia?" A warm hand pressed on my shoulder.

Ernest was in a dark suit that fitted him perfectly. The cufflinks on his sleeve were printed with the Marino family's crest. It was a silver snake entwined around a cross.

He was gentlemanly and courteous. The eyes hidden behind his glasses were full of adoration and tenderness.

Ernest was holding an exquisite enamel porcelain mug in his hand. The liquid in the mug was steaming with a pungent and bitter smell.

"Drink it while it's hot."

I stared at the dark, dense liquid in the mug. It was making me nauseous.

"Ernest, I haven't been feeling very well recently. I'm always feeling anxious, and my hair is falling. Can we go to another doctor?"

He paused momentarily before scooping up some of the herbal brew with a spoon. He blew on it gently and put it to my mouth.

"Mia, taking care of your body includes the process of detoxification. Once you've gone through a complete detox, our baby will come naturally. Be a good girl. Don't be stubborn about this."

He spoke softly as usual, but there was something in his tone that informed me this was not a negotiation.

This was the control the Don of the Marinos had over everyone. In his world, his word was the rule.

I opened up my mouth to swallow the pungent, bitter liquid robotically. I was not like any of them. I hated bloodshed.

It was the reason why I changed my identity five years ago to escape from the Corleones, a family that was filled with guns and death.

I kept my abilities a secret as all I wanted to do was to be an ordinary designer in Micosa.

That was until I met Ernest. He was different from my father and never forced me to learn or accept anything involving bloodshed.

Ernest saved me from a torturous life and gave me a grand wedding. Everyone in Minota knew that he loved and doted on me immensely.

I thought I had found my sun, but I had no idea that I had left hell and leapt into a deeper, darker abyss.

When I swallowed the last of the brew, Ernest's phone rang. He picked up the call and put it on speaker. The call was from his trusted Underboss, who was speaking in unfluent Gurmon, a language he thought I did not understand.

"Don Marino, the doctors have confirmed it. The Donna has come back with clean results on her immunoglobulin indicator. She is clear of it. We can conduct the organ transplant at any time."

Ernest smiled as he replied in exceptional Gurmon.

"Good. Anna can't wait any longer. Strengthen her safety and supervision for the next three days. She can't have any food that might trigger negative effects.

"After all, there is no better kidney than this in the entire Micosa."

Ernest hung up and turned to look at me tenderly as usual.

"What's wrong, Mia? Why are you looking so pale?"

I clenched the corner of my blanket as my fingers dug into my palms.

Clean results on the immunoglobulin indicator.

No better kidney than this.

Those phrases were like an ice-cold knife that sliced up the dream life I had been living in for the past six months.

Ernest never wanted a child. All he wanted was to use immunosuppressants on me to destroy my immune system so that my kidney could be successfully transplanted into that woman called Anna Bucca without her body rejecting it.

"Nothing."

I never told Ernest that I had been studying different languages since I was three. Understanding Gurmon was not difficult for me. I lowered my head to hide the shock in my eyes.

"The brew must have been too bitter for me."

Ernest laughed softly as he brushed my nose intimately with his finger.

"I know it's been hard on you. Once Anna's surgery is a success, I'll take you to the Aldiva Islands to make up for our honeymoon."

Once Anna's surgery succeeded?

Ernest did not even bother to hide the fact that his stepsister, Anna, was the only person whom he truly adored.

On an island in Severia, inside the old castle of the Corleones, was the location of the power center of the underworld. A black flag was flapping in the wind by the sea.I was wearing a long, red down with the skirt trailing long behind me. My hair was put up high, and my fair, slender neck was exposed. In this place, I was no longer the weak designer known as Mia. I was Mia Corleone, the queen of this place.Silvio was by my side. He had taken off his bloodstained cloak and replaced it with the dapper suit that was worn only by the Don."Mia, a report from Micosa has just been delivered."Silvio placed a photo of Micosa's most dangerous slum in front of me. Ernest was crouching next to a heap of garbage as a group of beggars was beating him up over a piece of bread that had just been stepped on. His hands were once used to play the piano and sign contracts, but were now covered in dirt.As for Anna, she had managed to live six months in the warehouse. Every piece of her skin w

Anna's surgery was a success, well, at least from a medical point of view. Ernest's kidney has been successfully transplanted into her body. However, the Corleones' doctor would not allow her to die so easily.Silvio had hired the top medical team to look after her. Their mission was to ensure that they could prolong her pain regardless of the price. An abandoned warehouse in the suburbs of Micosa had been modified into a dark, simple hospital room. Anna was covered in tubes while lying in her bed. She had to bear the internal pain of two different blood types and DNA massacring each other in her body, as she had no anaesthesia or anti-rejection drugs to help her through this. She could feel her organs being torn alive right inside her.I pushed open the doors of the warehouse. The light shone on Anna's contorted face as she looked at me while trying to say something. She was croaking at me, and she sounded like an old, dehydrated bellow."M-Mia… Just… kill me…"She struggled to

Ten minutes. That was all it took for Ernest's business empire to collapse in Micosa.I was in a black sedan printed with the Corleone family crest. Silvio was cutting his cigar elegantly next to me. "The old coots of the Marinos have been taken care of, Mia. "Even the Micosa banks have been issued a warning by the headquarters," Silvio informed me casually. The Marinos' life was in his hands, and he could change their fate with just a flick of his fingers.I looked out at the scenery flying past me.Micosa.I thought I was this city's favorite child in the last six months. It turned out I was just a plaything locked up in a cage."Silvio, I want the Micosas to lose every asset and every cent," I said softly. "That includes their mansions, their clothes, and everything they have under their names."He nodded and made a call. "Half an hour, Micosa. Make sure they end up applying for bankruptcy. Freeze all of their assets. Every trade they make will come under the Corleones."

The stench of blood and gunpowder filled the air inside the surgery room. It was the scent of death.Ernest sat limply on the floor. His left wrist had a bullet hole in it, and blood kept dripping from it onto the white tiles of the surgery room, but he felt no pain. It was because of the fear, a fear that chilled him to the bones and deep inside his trembling soul. The fear had numbed every nerve in his body.He stared at the red tulip insignia. That was not an insignia to the underworld, but an invitation sent out by Death itself. Nothing could make it out alive where the insignia was seen."S-Severia… Corleone…"Ernest's voice was shaking badly. He looked up with great difficulty at me while I was still sitting on the surgery table. I wiped off the bloodstain on my hand slowly as I looked at him coldly, as if he were dead to me.Silvio stood in front of Ernest. He was a big, muscular man, and his shadow cast over Ernest completely."Ernest Marino."Silvio crouched and patted

On the morning of the surgery, a storm hit Micosa. The sky was so dark that one could not help feeling worried that something was about to happen. The thick clouds covered up every ray of sunlight.Ernest's bodyguards forced me into the car. I was extremely weak after days of heavy medication and mental stress. Ernest was sitting next to me as he put up a show of tidying up my messy hair."You just need to take a nap, Mia. Once the surgery is over and Anna gets her health back, I'll make it up to you several times over."His tone resumed to its usual tenderness, but this fake act was making me nauseous instead. The car stopped at a remote private hospital. In name, this place was a clinic, but it was actually a site used by the Marinos to conduct unseemly business. The doctors here have taken numerous lives.I was pushed into the surgery room where Anna was already prepped in the bed next to mine. She looked at me tauntingly with a crazed sort of delight in her eyes."Thank you f

There was a sudden thunderstorm in Micosa that night.Cold air followed him into the room when he returned. He was holding a box of my favorite dessert from a particular Froise pastry shop I loved. He was still acting loving toward me."Mia, I'm so sorry I came home late. I got delayed by that business at the port."He came over to me to kiss me on the forehead as usual, but I instinctively turned away to avoid his touch. His hand paused mid-air, and his eyes narrowed dangerously behind his glasses. However, he quickly regained his composure."What's wrong? Did Anna say something to you when she stopped by this afternoon?" He sounded like he was trying to figure out what was going on in my mind. It was clear that the bodyguard had told him everything.I stared at him right in the eyes."We have been married for six months, Ernest. Was there a moment when you had been true to me?"Ernest turned quiet. He slowly took off his glasses. Without them to hide his eyes, they looked ch
