Chapter 4

Author: The Solitary Kite
All four guards charged me at once inside the record room. Two grabbed my arms, twisted them behind my back, and slammed me against the wall.

"Stop moving, or I'll kill you!"

Their hands clamped around my wrists and wrenched my arms higher. My wrists started bleeding, and my joints hurt from being squeezed as they almost popped.

I fought back as best I could and drove my heel down on one guard's toes. "Get off me! You're helping them commit a crime!"

The security guard cursed and tightened his grip. The confession letter fell to the floor, and they were even stepped on quite a few times.

Jane walked forward, grabbed my hair, and forced my head back. With her other hand, she seized mine and dragged it toward the ink pad.

"You don't have a choice! You're taking the blame today, whether you like it or not!"

-

The elevator indicator at the end of the hall lit up.

Thomas straightened his tie and hurried over to greet the inspection team. Branch employees had packed the area around the elevator, as they were called to welcome the staff from headquarters.

Thomas raised his voice over the crowd.

"The chairman will be here any second! We caught the person who betrayed the company. Your year-end bonuses are safe. Stand straight and behave yourselves!"

The employees shouted their agreement.

"She deserves it! Send her to prison!"

"Stealing from the company is disgraceful!"

The elevator chimed, and the doors opened.

The chairman stepped out, surrounded by senior management and bodyguards. He wore a tailored suit, and fury darkened his face. His presence silenced the entire floor.

The moment Thomas and Jane saw him, their expressions changed.

Jane gripped my arm and rushed to claim credit.

"Mr. Gomez! We worked all night and found the person who stole the money! It was Mavis! We were just about to make her sign the confession and put her thumbprint on it!"

She held out the confession, which bore half of my thumbprint.

Eager to impress him, the head of security pressed harder on my shoulder and kicked the back of my knee to make me fall to the floor.

"Stay still, Mavis! If you stole from the company, you should've known you'd get caught! How can you do something stupid when you're so young?"

My knee gave out from the pressure, and I nearly fell on the tiles.

That was the story they had prepared for headquarters. A scapegoat, a forged confession, and the same lie repeated by everyone at the branch.

They assumed the chairman would never bother listening to an intern. Once my thumbprint was on the page, the five-hundred-thousand-dollar gap would simply disappear.

I forced myself upright and looked straight at the one who had the highest authority in the company.

"Dad, do you think so too?"

Three months later… The judge struck the gavel, and the sound echoed through the courtroom. "Thomas Jones and Jane Lynch are found guilty of misappropriating company funds, embezzlement, and criminal intimidation. The evidence is conclusive, and the sentences will be combined." The judge read the final ruling in his stern voice. "Thomas Jones is sentenced to fifteen years in prison, and all his personal assets will be confiscated. Jane Lynch is sentenced to twelve years in prison and fined. The sentences take effect immediately." Thomas and Jane sat at the defense table in their orange jumpsuits. In the short three months, most of Thomas's hair had turned white, and he had begun to become crooked. Jane looked worse. Her face was hollow, and none of her old arrogance remained. They turned toward me in the public gallery and began to sob. "Mavis, we know what we did was wrong... Please, give us another chance..." Their regret came too late. Their tears meant nothing to

The lead federal officer walked up to Thomas and unfolded the sealed document with a stern expression. "Thomas Jones and Jane Lynch, we have received a report that you may have embezzled a large amount of company funds." He held the document in front of Thomas. "This domestic account, verified in Thomas's name, was linked to the offshore account. The international tracing report has just been completed." Thomas saw his own name on the record and froze. His confidence vanished, replaced by terror. "Impossible! The person from the black market said the account couldn't be traced! How could it lead back to me?" As his last hope collapsed, he shook his head and kept repeating that it was impossible. I stepped forward and opened a video the auditors had sent to my phone. I held the screen in front of him. "You may as well see exactly how you were caught." The video showed Thomas wearing sunglasses and a mask while completing the offshore account's verification process at a b

At the same time, Howard, who was restrained at the corner, finally broke. He looked at Thomas being pinned to the floor, then at the hotel records scattered around them, and knew it was all over. If he kept resisting, he could spend the rest of his life in prison, too. He collapsed on the floor and crawled forward. "Sir! Ma'am! I confess! I'll tell you everything! Thomas forced me to do it. I had no choice. He threatened to fire me if I refused!" Thomas jerked his head up and glared at him, his eyes red. "You're lying! When did I ever force you? You stole the money. Don't drag me down with you!" Howard pulled out his phone with shaking hands and opened a hidden audio file. "Change every approval step to that intern's name. Once it's done, I'll give you thirty thousand dollars. If you can't handle something this simple, you're fired tomorrow." Thomas's voice rang clearly through the hall as Howard played the recording. It proved that he had ordered the changes and threatene

After a raging roar, a woman stormed into the office with a boy and four large men. A security guard tried to stop them, but one of the men shoved him to the floor. The woman spotted Jane, who was standing beside Thomas, and charged forward and slapped her. The slap was loud enough to echo through the office. Jane screamed and stumbled into a potted tree, knocking it over. "You shameless witch!" The woman was none other than Donna, Thomas's wife. She pointed at Jane, yelling, "You used the company money my husband stole to buy limited-edition purses, and you still have the nerve to play innocent?!" Jane covered her swollen cheek. Her hair had fallen loose, and blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. She screamed and ducked behind Thomas, clutching the back of his suit. "Thomas, help me! I'm carrying your child! You promised you'd divorce that hag and marry me. You can't abandon me now!" The employees all erupted in discussion, many of them completely shocked to fin

"Mr. Gomez, everyone in the company knows Mavis is good with computers!" Thomas forced himself to stay calm and pointed to the report in the lead auditor's hands. He pushed himself off the floor and tried to reclaim the authority of a general manager. "She must have stolen my administrator password and altered the records to frame me!" Jane's eyes lit up. She collapsed to her knees and burst into tears. "Mr. Gomez, you have to help us! Mavis hid her identity and came to the branch. Maybe she embezzled the money herself, then stole my password and changed the data when she realized she might be caught!" I pulled over a chair, sat down, and crossed my legs. "I'm the only heiress to the Gomez Group. Why would I steal a mere five hundred thousand dollars?" Thomas used that opportunity and immediately said, "She may not need money, but young people do reckless things for the thrill of it. Maybe she traded gold and lost everything!" He put on a pained expression. "She may have pa

The entire hallway fell silent. Thomas's eager smile instantly froze, and his eyes widened. Jane's hand began to shake. She released my arm so quickly that she twisted her ankle and nearly fell. My father ignored them. His eyes scanned the crowd and stopped on the bloody marks around my wrists, and his face hardened even more. "Who gave you permission to touch my daughter?" Before Thomas could answer, my father drove a hard kick into his chest. There was a huge bang, and he flew backward into the glass door behind him. He clutched his chest as he slid down to the floor, struggling to breathe. All of the other employees stepped back in shock. No one dared to help him. "Daughter...? Mavis is the chairman's daughter?" "Holy… She's the heiress to the company?" "Then Thomas... Doesn't that mean..." The other employees who had demanded my arrest moments earlier turned pale. All they wanted to do was to find a hole to hide in. Jane's knees gave out as she collapsed onto
