Chapter 1

The message had barely gone through when the typing indicator appeared.

Knowing Sabrina Georgiou's temper and how fiercely protective she was of me, I figured she was probably already calling the bodyguards and sending them over to deal with everyone.

Instead, a long voice message popped up.

I tapped the tranion button, and what I read nearly made me choke.

"What billionaire romance novel have you been reading these days? You're the only son in this family. Where did I suddenly get another brother from? Are you just looking for another excuse to quit your job?

"Dad already said you've been spoiled your whole life and need to learn what hard work actually feels like. I'm overseas negotiating an acquisition right now, so stop running around tattling to me about everything!"

Going to Sabrina whenever I had a problem had worked my entire life.

This was the first time it had ever backfired.

Before I could recover, Melanie Ashcroft snatched the phone out of my hand.

Finley Tatum glanced at the message and sneered. "Do you seriously think saving some random number as your sister is enough to convince everyone you're some billionaire heir? Have you even looked at yourself? Look at how broke you look."

Melanie tossed the phone back into my arms, her expression contemptuous.

"So much for that little rich-kid act. Do you really think you can make fun of Mr. Georgiou and get away with it? Clearly, you'll never learn your place."

She jerked her chin toward the storage room.

"Move those 50 boxes of old files up to the records room on the third floor. The elevator's down today, so you'll be taking the stairs. If you don't finish, you're not leaving."

My head snapped up.

"50 boxes? That's the logistics department's job. I'm in business planning!"

Melanie gave a mocking laugh.

"You can't even put together a decent proposal. Frankly, I have no idea how you got into business planning in the first place."

The second she turned toward Finley, however, her entire demeanor changed.

"Now, Finley is different. He joined the company and immediately turned in a flawless proposal. If all you're good for is taking up a desk, carrying a few boxes might finally make you useful."

Finley looked down his nose at me. "Ms. Ashcroft, maybe you should go easy on him. He could've been pampered his entire life. For all we know, he's never lifted anything heavier than a coffee cup."

He folded his arms and sneered.

"Still, my sister always says the company doesn't pay people to sit around doing nothing. If you can't even manage a basic task like this, wouldn't it be easier to quit now instead of waiting for her to come back and fire you herself?"

The two of them were so smug that I could feel my blood pressure rising.

Once I had enough evidence and Sabrina came home, Finley wasn't going to be the only one answering for this. I'd deal with Melanie right along with him.

I turned and headed for the storage room.

By the time I dragged all 50 boxes into the records room, seven or eight blood blisters had formed across my palms. The pain was excruciating.

I took a deep breath, shook out my hands, and headed back to my desk.

Then, I stopped.

My workstation had been completely trashed.

Someone had spilled coffee all over my keyboard, and the desktop tower was making a sharp sizzling sound from an electrical shor.

Finley's raised hand froze in midair."S-Sabrina?"His lips started trembling, and a second later, so did his legs.He had spent the past three months strutting around the company pretending to be the heir to the Georgiou family, so there was no chance he didn't recognize her.Sabrina was the one who actually controlled Georgiou Group, and her reputation as a ruthless businesswoman preceded her.Melanie clearly knew that, too. The color drained from her face as she collapsed onto the couch."M-Ms. Georgiou!"Sabrina didn't even look at them. She crossed the room, crouched beside me, and carefully pulled me into her arms. "Jayden…"She was usually so composed, yet this time, I heard a faint tremor in her voice. The moment I leaned into her warm embrace, the tension I'd been holding onto finally melted away."Sabrina…"My throat was so raw that I could barely get the words out. Tears rolled down my face as I tried anyway."They wouldn't let me tattle on them… They forced liqu

I struggled desperately, but some of the liquor went down my windpipe and sent me into a violent coughing fit.A burning, stabbing pain spread from my stomach through my entire body almost immediately."Hold him still! Don't let him throw it up!" Melanie shouted excitedly.Finley stood nearby with his phone pointed at me, laughing as he recorded everything."How does it feel, Jayden? You always acted like you were so arrogant, didn't you? Look at you now. You're on your knees like a pathetic loser."By the time they had forced half the bottle down my throat, the bodyguards finally let go.I collapsed onto the carpet, clutching my stomach as another vicious cramp tore through me.Melanie gave a cold laugh, pulled out the forged confession and a pen, then tossed both in front of me."That's enough. You look pathetic. Even Ms. Kellar has lost interest. Sign it, and we'll let this go for today."Finley walked over and planted his dress shoe on my fingers before grinding his heel i

By 5:00 pm, the entire company was in chaos.Janice Kellar, the head of the partner company, had arrived with a team of lawyers and threatened to take the company straight to court unless she received the ten-million-dollar penalty payment that very day.Inside her office, Vivian tore into Melanie and Finley."I don't care how you do it. You two had better find a way to calm Ms. Kellar down. If this turns into a lawsuit, you're both fired!"By the time they left Vivian's office, Melanie was sweating with anxiety."Finley, what are we supposed to do? You know how difficult Ms. Kellar can be. How are we supposed to convince her to let this go?" she asked.Finley thought for a moment before a malicious smile spread across his face."Ms. Kellar has a thing for men, doesn't she? And we happen to have the perfect fall guy."Melanie froze for a moment before realization dawned. "You mean… Jayden?""He's to blame for the whole mess anyway. Having a few drinks with Ms. Kellar and apolo

I was locked in the basement warehouse all night without food or water. At 8:00 am the next morning, the metal door finally opened.Melanie stood outside with one hand over her nose, looking at me with disdain."Well? Have you had enough time to think? Are you going to sign now?"I braced one hand against the wall and slowly pushed myself up. My vision darkened almost immediately, and my legs were so weak that I could barely stay upright.Still, I gritted my teeth and stared at her and uttered through gritted teeth, "No. I didn't do it. I'm not signing a confession for something I didn't do.""You've got quite a backbone, aren't you?"Melanie gave a cold laugh as she threw a filthy janitor's uniform at my feet."If you won't sign the statement, you can start working off some of the damage you caused. The janitor called out today, so you're cleaning all 12 restrooms on the first three floors."I didn't argue.Instead, I picked up the uniform and pulled it on.They could enjoy

"If you refuse to admit it…" Finley continued. "I'll have you know that my sister is the company CEO. Once she gets back, I'll make sure no one in this industry ever hires you again."I rose leisurely to my feet, a cold smile tugging at my lips."Sure."Then, I looked him dead in the eye. "If your sister really is the CEO, why don't we call her right now? I'd love to hear exactly how she plans to ruin my career."Finley's expression stiffened. He immediately looked away."Who do you think you are? My sister doesn't have time to talk to some nobody intern. She's overseas negotiating deals worth billions. What makes you think you're important enough for her to take your call?"I gave him a faint smile and stepped closer."Deals worth billions? Funny. I heard the CEO is overseas working on an acquisition, too."Keeping my eyes trained on him, I lowered my voice. "But her last name is Georgiou, and yours is Tatum. If you're really her biological brother, how exactly does that work?

I leaned against the cold tile wall in the restroom, my head pounding and my body burning with fever. The more I thought about everything that had happened, the angrier I became. In all 22 years of my life, no one had ever treated me like this.Forget about not tattling, and screw the start money! I was done putting up with this to keep Dad happy.I pulled out my phone, created a group chat, and added Mom, Dad, Sabrina, and practically every relative I could think of.I was about to start a voice message and start tattling about everything that had happened when I heard two coworkers whispering by the sinks outside."Hey, did you hear what happened? Finley made a complete fool of himself in that meeting today.""Serves him right. He walks around here like he owns the company and everyone else is beneath him. But seriously, do you think he's actually the CEO's brother?""Not a chance."The second coworker sounded amused. "My cousin works in the HR department. I already found ou
