Chapter 3

Author: Suki
The next day, I went to Natalie and Simon's home.

They hadn't invited me over, of course. I'd found the apartment through a photo Natalie had posted on her social media.

The doorbell rang for a long time before Natalie finally opened the door. The moment she saw me, her eyes turned red.

"Tara…"

I looked past her into the apartment.

Three types of shoes filled the shoe cabinet—a man's, a woman's, and a child's. On top of the cabinet was a bunch of children's art supplies.

A family portrait drawn by a child was stuck on the fridge. It showed a father and mother holding hands with a little boy, with a huge sun drawn above their heads.

The photo wall was filled with pictures of the three of them together. The one in the center had been taken on the day Andy was born. Simon held the newborn in his arms while Natalie leaned against the hospital bed. Her face was pale, but she wore a blissful smile.

The date was written beneath the photo. It'd been taken September 12, six years ago.

My fingers tensed.

That day, Simon and I had agreed to go shopping for his wedding suit. I'd waited all afternoon for him, only to receive a single message from him much later that evening.

"A problem came up with my project. We'll need to postpone the wedding."

At the time, I clutched the wedding suit catalog and reassured myself by saying that it didn't matter—that he was just busy with work.

But on that very day, when he told me we were postponing the wedding I'd been looking forward to with all my heart, he'd posed for a family photo with Natalie and their son.

Standing behind me, Natalie choked out, "Tara, I'm sorry…"

I didn't turn around. "All these years, whenever I complained about how Simon kept postponing our wedding, didn't you rant about him with me?"

Her tears fell harder, but I chuckled.

"I told you that he was refusing to get married. He kept running abroad each time. I said that maybe he didn't love me that much after all. Every time I said those things, you'd hug me and tell me not to overthink things.

"Be honest with me, Natalie. What was truly going on in your head whenever you held me and comforted me then?"

She covered her mouth and sobbed so hard she could barely stay on her feet.

When Simon finally rushed into the apartment, the first thing out of his mouth wasn't concern for whether I was hurt. Instead, he spotted Andy's shoes by the front door, and his expression hardened as he turned to Natalie.

"Why did you let her in? Andy's here!"

I snorted. "Even now, all you care about is whether Andy gets hurt."

Frowning, Simon said, "Stop acting like this, Tara."

"Acting like what?" My voice trembled hard. "I waited for you for eight years, only to see a family portrait featuring the three of you. What does that make these past eight years of my life, Simon?"

Simon swallowed hard before saying, "I'll settle things."

There it was again. I'd heard those words from him countless times already.

When he said we had to postpone the wedding, he said he'd settle everything. When we delayed registering our marriage yet again, he also said he'd settle things.

Even when I waited for him at the bridal studio until closing time, he said he'd settle everything.

In the end, his way of settling things was simply to leave me hanging while he happily made a home with another woman and the child he had with her.

Our voices had grown louder, and the door to a bedroom opened.

Andy appeared in the doorway, clutching his dinosaur toy as he eyed me timidly. "Miss, are you here to take my daddy away from me?"

I froze in place, while Simon immediately shielded Andy behind him. "Go back to your room, Andy."

However, Andy looked terrified.

Natalie went over and crouched down to reassure him in a trembling voice, "It's okay, Andy. I'm here. Be a good boy."

Watching the three of them all huddled up together, I felt the last of my strength drain away. I lost all urge to question them.

Who did Simon truly love? Did Natalie regret what she'd done to me? How could they have lied to me all these years?

I'd come looking for answers to these questions, but now, it no longer mattered to me.

I turned around and walked out.

But just as I reached the elevator, Natalie's alarmed cry rang out behind me. "Andy?"

I turned around and saw the door to Andy's room standing ajar. The room was empty.

He was nowhere to be seen.

Simon stayed in Goldshore for three days. He didn't try to approach me again. He simply stood outside my office building every day, watching me as I came to work in the morning and left in the evening. On the evening of the third day, Natalie showed up as well. She hadn't brought Andy with her.She stood alone across the street, holding a paper bag. When she saw me, her eyes quickly reddened. "Tara!"I stopped in my tracks. Simon stood nearby, but he didn't approach us.Natalie held out the paper bag to me. It was filled with some of her old belongings—photos we'd taken together in college, the hair clip I'd bought her after she got those stitches in her forehead, and the friendship bracelet I'd given her."I shouldn't be keeping these things," she said, her voice choked.I didn't take the bag, and she eventually lowered her outstretched arm."When Andy went missing, I shouldn't have suspected you. I never should've slapped you." Tears poured down her cheeks. "I know an apology

I found a new job in Goldshore. It didn't pay very well, but at least I no longer had to arrange my life around anyone else's schedule.Every morning, I took the bus that went by the sea. The sea breeze streamed in through the window cracks, carrying a faint salty scent that helped clear my head at last.During the first month, I often woke up in the middle of the night. In my dreams, I saw that private room and heard that phone call all over again. I heard Andy asking if I'd come to take his daddy away from him. I experienced that slap from Natalie once more. When I woke, the room would be dark, with only the faint glow of a streetlight outside the window. In the past, whenever I used to have a nightmare, Simon would pull me into his arms and say, "Don't be scared. I'm here."Then I learned that he also repeated the same words to his wife and son.Slowly, I learned to live on my own again.I went to the hospital for my follow-up appointments alone, I ate my meals alone, and I t

Two weeks later, Natalie posted a long message in our class group chat. She admitted that she'd secretly been married to Simon for seven years, and that most of his supposed business trips abroad had actually been a cover for the time he spent with her and their child. She also shared that I'd tried my best to look for Andy when he'd gone missing that day, but she and Simon had both accused me of taking him. After she sent the message, it took a while for someone to reply. Eventually, one of my classmates who used to envy my relationship with Simon asked, "Where's Tara? How is she doing?"Natalie didn't respond. She didn't have the answers either.Simon was in our old bedroom when he saw the message. He'd packed the things I'd left behind into cardboard boxes—our matching coffee mugs, the scarf's gift box, the wedding invitations I'd picked out, and the wedding itinerary I'd written out.He saw pages and pages of my notes, all done in my handwriting. I'd planned everything down t

By the time Simon found the bridal studio, it had been three days since I'd left. The sales assistant still remembered me.She told him that when I'd tried on wedding gowns that day, I'd tripped on some steps and badly sprained my ankle."We wanted to take her to the hospital, but she said it wasn't necessary. She said her fiancé would pick her up."The shop assistant looked at Simon, her tone hesitant. "She sat by the entrance, waiting for a long time. It was already dark outside when she finally carried the garment bag out herself and left."Zhou Xuchuan froze on the spot, his face looked ghastly. He remembered the call I'd made to him that day. I'd been in so much pain that I was even gasping as I spoke. But at the time, he was accompanying Andy to a parent-child activity at school. The teacher had asked the fathers to hold their children while they played a game, and Natalie sat beside them, smiling. When he'd seen my incoming call, he stepped outside the classroom to answer

The plane landed just as the sky started to brighten. I sat by the window, watching as the sunlight slowly illuminated an unfamiliar city. The flight attendant announced that passengers could disembark, but I remained seated for a long time. It wasn't until most of the people around me had left that I slowly got to my feet.My feet had been in so much pain that they'd gone numb. The backs of my feet had already been rubbed raw last night, but I stuck a pair of socks over them anyway. Every time I moved now, it felt as though the skin were being torn open all over again.I dragged my suitcase out of the airport. Only when the cold wind hit my face did I realize I'd been crying the entire way.I'd come to the city of Goldshore, and it hadn't been on a whim. The year I graduated from college, I'd received a job offer from a company in Goldshore.Simon had just started his own business then. He was so busy he barely had time to eat. Holding me in his arms, he'd said, "Tara, please do

When Simon and Natalie arrived at the convenience store by the back gate of the apartment complex, Andy was sitting beside the cashier, crying. He was holding a strawberry lollipop, his eyes red. The moment he saw Natalie rush in, he jumped off the stool and threw himself into her arms. The cashier explained that Andy had come in alone. He'd risen onto his tiptoes to place the lollipop on the counter and asked how much it cost."He said his mommy was crying, and he wanted to get her something sweet to eat so that she'd feel better."After hearing that, Natalie practically deflated. Clutching Andy, she sank to the floor and sobbed, her shoulders trembling uncontrollably."I'm here, Andy. Mommy's here. You don't have to be scared anymore."Andy clutched her blouse with his tiny hands and asked between sobs, "Mommy, is that lady a bad person?"Natalie's sobs abruptly stopped. The bright lights of the convenience store fell across her face. Her lips moved several times, but she coul
