Chapter 4

Author: Suki
Natalie's face instantly turned pale.

She checked Andy's room, the balcony, and the bathroom in a rush, her voice growing more piercing with each cry.

"Andy!"

Simon panicked, too.

He called the property management office while rushing into the stairwell.

I stood by the door, my heart pounding. Andy had been in his room just moments ago. How could he have suddenly disappeared?

Forgetting the humiliation I'd just endured, I joined them in the search.

After checking the elevator lobby and the stairwell, I went down to the apartment complex's gardens and even the underground parking lot, calling Andy's name over and over until my voice grew hoarse.

The backs of my feet started bleeding again. Each step felt more painful than the one before, but I didn't stop.

Natalie was so frantic she could barely stay on her feet. I reached out to steady her, but she recoiled as if she'd been burned, immediately pulling her hand away.

That single gesture cut deep.

An hour later, the property management staff told us there were blind spots in the surveillance footage, and they hadn't been able to determine where Andy had gone.

Natalie broke down. She rushed toward me, her hair disheveled and her eyes frighteningly red. "You can hate me all you want and come after me however you like, Tara, but don't hurt my son!"

I stared at her in shock, my chest painfully tight. "I didn't do anything to him."

"Then why has he gone missing!" she cried out, her voice scratchy and her tears rolling down her cheeks. "You know that he's all I have!"

Those words hurt more than anything else could have. I remembered how she'd once held me and said, "You still have me."

But now, she stood next to Simon and accused me of using her son to get revenge on her.

Simon was glaring at me as well, his barely contained agitation evident in his eyes. "Tara, don't make things any uglier than they already are."

My heart grew colder by the second. "You think I hid him, too?"

He stared at me, his voice cold and unfamiliar as he declared, "You know perfectly well that Andy is Natalie's whole world, yet you're taking your anger out on a child! When did you become so vicious, Tara?"

For a moment, I was frozen in shock. I'd just spent all that time searching for their son. I'd shouted until my throat hurt, and the blood from my feet had already seeped through my shoes.

But they couldn't see any of it.

In their eyes, the moment their son disappeared, I'd become the prime suspect.

I was just about to defend myself when Natalie slapped me hard across the face. My cheek burned.

She glared daggers at me, still sobbing hard as she declared, "Tara, if anything happens to Andy, I'll never forgive you for the rest of my life."

She paused for a moment, as if making one of the hardest decisions of her life. "From this moment onward, we're no longer friends."

I simply stared at her, unable to even shed a tear.

Many years ago, she'd been pushed down a flight of stairs while protecting me, and she'd needed five stitches in her forehead.

I'd cried my heart out, saying that she had to be in a lot of pain. She'd simply smiled and said, "Who cares about a bit of pain? We're best friends!"

But even the best of friends could end up in this situation.

Just then, Simon's phone rang.

The property management staff told him that someone had apparently spotted the child at a convenience store near the back gate of the apartment complex.

Natalie immediately turned and ran outside. Simon went after her without saying a word to me.

I touched my stinging cheek and laughed.

In the end, I really was alone.

I didn't wait for them to return.

After heading back to my apartment, I grabbed the suitcase I'd packed and took a cab to the airport. I went through the security check and boarded the plane without once checking my phone.

Once the plane was soaring through the clouds, I looked down at the rapidly shrinking city.

Somewhere down there was the man I'd loved for eight years and the woman who'd been my best friend.

I took out my SIM card and snapped it in half by force.

This was goodbye to both of them. I hoped we would never meet again.

Simon stayed in Goldshore for three days. He didn't try to approach me again. He simply stood outside my office building every day, watching me as I came to work in the morning and left in the evening. On the evening of the third day, Natalie showed up as well. She hadn't brought Andy with her.She stood alone across the street, holding a paper bag. When she saw me, her eyes quickly reddened. "Tara!"I stopped in my tracks. Simon stood nearby, but he didn't approach us.Natalie held out the paper bag to me. It was filled with some of her old belongings—photos we'd taken together in college, the hair clip I'd bought her after she got those stitches in her forehead, and the friendship bracelet I'd given her."I shouldn't be keeping these things," she said, her voice choked.I didn't take the bag, and she eventually lowered her outstretched arm."When Andy went missing, I shouldn't have suspected you. I never should've slapped you." Tears poured down her cheeks. "I know an apology

I found a new job in Goldshore. It didn't pay very well, but at least I no longer had to arrange my life around anyone else's schedule.Every morning, I took the bus that went by the sea. The sea breeze streamed in through the window cracks, carrying a faint salty scent that helped clear my head at last.During the first month, I often woke up in the middle of the night. In my dreams, I saw that private room and heard that phone call all over again. I heard Andy asking if I'd come to take his daddy away from him. I experienced that slap from Natalie once more. When I woke, the room would be dark, with only the faint glow of a streetlight outside the window. In the past, whenever I used to have a nightmare, Simon would pull me into his arms and say, "Don't be scared. I'm here."Then I learned that he also repeated the same words to his wife and son.Slowly, I learned to live on my own again.I went to the hospital for my follow-up appointments alone, I ate my meals alone, and I t

Two weeks later, Natalie posted a long message in our class group chat. She admitted that she'd secretly been married to Simon for seven years, and that most of his supposed business trips abroad had actually been a cover for the time he spent with her and their child. She also shared that I'd tried my best to look for Andy when he'd gone missing that day, but she and Simon had both accused me of taking him. After she sent the message, it took a while for someone to reply. Eventually, one of my classmates who used to envy my relationship with Simon asked, "Where's Tara? How is she doing?"Natalie didn't respond. She didn't have the answers either.Simon was in our old bedroom when he saw the message. He'd packed the things I'd left behind into cardboard boxes—our matching coffee mugs, the scarf's gift box, the wedding invitations I'd picked out, and the wedding itinerary I'd written out.He saw pages and pages of my notes, all done in my handwriting. I'd planned everything down t

By the time Simon found the bridal studio, it had been three days since I'd left. The sales assistant still remembered me.She told him that when I'd tried on wedding gowns that day, I'd tripped on some steps and badly sprained my ankle."We wanted to take her to the hospital, but she said it wasn't necessary. She said her fiancé would pick her up."The shop assistant looked at Simon, her tone hesitant. "She sat by the entrance, waiting for a long time. It was already dark outside when she finally carried the garment bag out herself and left."Zhou Xuchuan froze on the spot, his face looked ghastly. He remembered the call I'd made to him that day. I'd been in so much pain that I was even gasping as I spoke. But at the time, he was accompanying Andy to a parent-child activity at school. The teacher had asked the fathers to hold their children while they played a game, and Natalie sat beside them, smiling. When he'd seen my incoming call, he stepped outside the classroom to answer

The plane landed just as the sky started to brighten. I sat by the window, watching as the sunlight slowly illuminated an unfamiliar city. The flight attendant announced that passengers could disembark, but I remained seated for a long time. It wasn't until most of the people around me had left that I slowly got to my feet.My feet had been in so much pain that they'd gone numb. The backs of my feet had already been rubbed raw last night, but I stuck a pair of socks over them anyway. Every time I moved now, it felt as though the skin were being torn open all over again.I dragged my suitcase out of the airport. Only when the cold wind hit my face did I realize I'd been crying the entire way.I'd come to the city of Goldshore, and it hadn't been on a whim. The year I graduated from college, I'd received a job offer from a company in Goldshore.Simon had just started his own business then. He was so busy he barely had time to eat. Holding me in his arms, he'd said, "Tara, please do

  • I'm the Side Chick in My Own Romance   Chapter 5

When Simon and Natalie arrived at the convenience store by the back gate of the apartment complex, Andy was sitting beside the cashier, crying. He was holding a strawberry lollipop, his eyes red. The moment he saw Natalie rush in, he jumped off the stool and threw himself into her arms. The cashier explained that Andy had come in alone. He'd risen onto his tiptoes to place the lollipop on the counter and asked how much it cost."He said his mommy was crying, and he wanted to get her something sweet to eat so that she'd feel better."After hearing that, Natalie practically deflated. Clutching Andy, she sank to the floor and sobbed, her shoulders trembling uncontrollably."I'm here, Andy. Mommy's here. You don't have to be scared anymore."Andy clutched her blouse with his tiny hands and asked between sobs, "Mommy, is that lady a bad person?"Natalie's sobs abruptly stopped. The bright lights of the convenience store fell across her face. Her lips moved several times, but she coul
