The room fell into a deafening silence.

Elena stared at Damien, searching his face for even the slightest sign that he was joking.

She found none.

“My mother…” Her voice trembled. “She died twelve years ago.”

“That’s what the world was told.”

“I buried her.”

“No.”

Damien’s answer was calm.

“You buried a coffin.”

Anger flashed across Elena’s face.

“Don’t.”

He didn’t speak.

“Don’t you dare use my mother to manipulate me.”

“I’m not.”

“You expect me to believe she suddenly appeared three years ago?”

“I expect you to decide after you’ve seen the evidence.”

Damien opened the cream-colored folder and removed another envelope.

It was old.

The edges had yellowed with age, and the wax seal had long since been broken.

He placed it on the desk between them.

“I’ve kept this for three years.”

Elena hesitated.

“Open it.”

Slowly, she reached for the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter.

The handwriting stopped her heart.

She knew those elegant loops.

She had watched them fill birthday cards.

Christmas notes.

School permission slips.

It was her mother’s handwriting.

Her fingers began to shake.

“No…”

She unfolded the paper.

The first line made tears gather in her eyes.

If you’re reading this, then Damien finally found the courage to trust you.

Elena’s knees weakened.

She grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself.

“No…”

“It can’t be…”

She continued reading.

My precious Elena,

If this letter has reached you, then I have either failed… or the time has finally come for you to learn the truth.

A tear rolled down Elena’s cheek.

“This is impossible.”

Damien remained silent.

She kept reading.

Everything you’ve ever believed about my death is a lie.

Her breathing became uneven.

Your father is far more dangerous than you know. Never confront him alone. Never trust the people who smile around him. And if one day your path crosses with Damien De Luca… trust him before you trust anyone else.

The letter ended abruptly.

There was no signature.

Only a dark stain at the bottom of the page.

Elena looked up, her eyes red.

“Where did you get this?”

Damien answered honestly.

“Your mother gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

She laughed through her tears.

“Stop saying that.”

“It’s true.”

“My mother has been dead for twelve years.”

“I watched her coffin lowered into the ground.”

“So did I.”

She frowned.

“What?”

Damien walked toward the fireplace.

“My father attended her funeral.”

“So did I.”

“He didn’t believe she was inside that coffin.”

Elena stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because two nights before the funeral…”

Damien paused.

“…she came to our house.”

The room spun around Elena.

“My father hid her.”

“He wanted to help her disappear.”

“But someone betrayed them.”

She covered her mouth.

“Who?”

Damien’s eyes darkened.

“We never found out.”

“By the time my father reached the safe house…”

“…she was gone.”

“Gone where?”

“We don’t know.”

The answer only deepened the mystery.

Elena looked back at the letter.

“If she’s alive…”

Damien interrupted gently.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You just—”

“I said she disappeared.”

“They’re not the same thing.”

Hope rose inside Elena’s chest.

Hope she had buried twelve years ago.

She hated it.

Because hope could be cruel.

A knock echoed through the office.

Aldo entered quickly.

His usually composed face had tightened.

“Sir.”

Damien looked at him.

“What happened?”

“We’ve just intercepted a message from one of our contacts inside Devereaux Holdings.”

Damien’s expression sharpened.

“And?”

Aldo swallowed.

“Vincent has called an emergency board meeting.”

“So?”

“He has announced that Miss Elena Devereaux disappeared this evening.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Aldo looked at her with sympathy.

“He has also informed the police…”

“…that you stole confidential company documents before fleeing.”

The color drained from Elena’s face.

“What?”

“He has filed charges.”

“Embezzlement.”

“Corporate espionage.”

“Theft.”

Her heart pounded wildly.

“I didn’t do any of that.”

Damien wasn’t surprised.

He closed the folder.

“I told you.”

“Your father made his first move.”

“No.”

Aldo corrected quietly.

“He made several.”

Damien looked at him.

“What else?”

Aldo hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“Every television station in the country has just received the same breaking news.”

He handed Damien a tablet.

On the screen was a live broadcast.

A smiling news anchor looked directly into the camera.

Behind her appeared Elena’s photograph.

MISSING BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS WANTED FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD

The words hit Elena like a punch to the chest.

Within a single hour…

Her father had turned her from a daughter into a fugitive.

The television continued to play in silence.

Elena couldn’t look away from her own face.

The photograph on the screen had been taken at last year’s charity gala. She was smiling beside her father, dressed in an elegant silver gown, completely unaware that one day the same picture would be used to paint her as a criminal.

The news anchor spoke with practiced confidence.

“Authorities have confirmed that billionaire heiress Elena Devereaux is wanted for questioning after confidential financial records were allegedly stolen from Devereaux Holdings. Police believe she may have fled the city…”

Damien muted the television.

The room fell silent once more.

“They’re lying.”

Elena’s voice cracked.

“I’ve never even entered the finance department.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“Then why would anyone believe this?”

“Because your father understands something most people don’t.”

Damien folded his arms.

“The first story people hear is usually the one they remember.”

Elena slowly sank into the nearest chair.

“It happened so quickly.”

“He was ready.”

“He didn’t prepare this tonight.”

Damien’s words settled heavily in the room.

“He prepared it months ago.”

Her eyes widened.

“Months?”

“The documents.”

“The witnesses.”

“The media.”

“They were all waiting.”

“They only needed one thing.”

“What?”

“You.”

The realization struck her like ice water.

Her father hadn’t reacted to her betrayal.

He had expected it.

Everything that was happening had already been planned.

A knock sounded at the office door.

One of Damien’s security men stepped inside.

“Sir.”

“What is it?”

“We’ve received another update.”

The man handed Damien a tablet.

“This was posted fifteen minutes ago.”

Damien looked at the screen before passing it to Elena.

It was her father’s official social media account.

There was a photograph of the two of them together.

The caption read:

My daughter has been struggling emotionally since the tragic loss of her mother. Despite every effort to help her, she has fallen in with dangerous people. My family asks for privacy while we pray for her safe return.

Elena’s vision blurred.

“He…”

“…he’s making himself look like the victim.”

“He always does.”

Damien’s voice remained steady.

“He isn’t speaking to you.”

“He’s speaking to the public.”

She clenched the tablet so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

“I hate him.”

“No.”

Damien corrected quietly.

“You hate the man he pretends to be.”

She looked up.

“What does that mean?”

He walked toward the bookshelf and pulled out a chessboard from one of the lower cabinets.

Without saying a word, he placed it on the coffee table.

He positioned the black pieces on one side.

The white pieces on the other.

Then he pointed to the white king.

“This is your father.”

Elena frowned.

“Shouldn’t he be black?”

Damien gave a faint smile.

“No.”

“Because he never sees himself as the villain.”

He picked up a black knight.

“This…”

“…is me.”

Then he picked up a white queen.

“This…”

“…was you.”

He moved the queen across the board and placed it beside the black knight.

“The moment you entered this estate…”

“…you changed sides.”

Elena stared at the board.

“It doesn’t feel like I chose a side.”

“You did.”

“The second you decided to fight him.”

She looked down at the pieces.

“So what happens now?”

Damien met her gaze.

“Now we stop reacting.”

“We start planning.”

Aldo returned carrying a slim black folder.

“I believe you’ll want to see this, sir.”

Damien opened it.

His expression darkened almost instantly.

“What is it?” Elena asked.

Instead of answering, he handed her the folder.

Inside were copies of tomorrow morning’s newspapers.

Every front page carried the same headline.

BILLIONAIRE’S DAUGHTER STEALS MILLIONS BEFORE DISAPPEARING

Another headline read:

POLICE BELIEVE ELENA DEVEREAUX MAY BE ARMED

She stared at the papers in disbelief.

“They haven’t even gone to print yet.”

“They’re scheduled for six a.m. delivery.”

She slowly looked up at Damien.

“How did you get these?”

“I have people everywhere.”

He closed the folder.

“So does your father.”

Elena swallowed hard.

“So even if I walk into a police station right now…”

“They’ll arrest you.”

“And no one will believe my story.”

Damien nodded.

“Exactly.”

A heavy silence settled over the room.

For the first time since arriving at the estate, Elena truly understood the position she was

She had no home.

No reputation.

No protection.

By sunrise…

The entire country would believe she was a criminal.

Damien walked toward the window, watching the rain wash over the estate.

Without turning around, he spoke.

“You asked me to marry you.”

“Yes.”

“I haven’t answered.”

Her heartbeat quickened.

He finally turned to face her.

“If we’re going to bring Vincent Devereaux to his knees…”

His voice was calm.

“…we’ll need more than revenge.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a small velvet ring box on the desk.

“This marriage will be real.”

“No secrets.”

“No betrayal.”

“No turning back.”

He gently pushed the box toward her.

“So, Elena…”

“Before I give you my answer…”

“I need you to answer one question.”

She held her breath.

“If destroying your father means losing everything you’ve ever known…”

“…will you still choose revenge?”

“That can’t be…” Damien stopped in his tracks. The figure emerged through the choking cloud of dust, running with surprising speed despite the collapsing tunnel. The emergency lights flickered across his face. Sebastian Armand. He was covered in blood. One arm hung uselessly at his side, and his breathing was ragged. Behind him, the tunnel collapsed section by section. “Move!” Gabriel shouted. Sebastian didn’t answer. He kept running. A massive slab of concrete crashed between him and the survivors. Without thinking, Damien sprinted back. “Damien!” Sophia screamed. “Come back!” He ignored her. The gap between him and Sebastian widened as the floor gave way beneath their feet. Sebastian stumbled. His injured leg buckled. He fell hard onto the railway tracks. Another explosion shook the mountain. Dust rained from the ceiling. Gabriel immediately understood what Damien intended. “No!” But Damien was already moving. He leaped across a broken section of the track,

Gabriel’s hand tightened around the emergency lever. The warning continued flashing across the console. EMERGENCY RELEASE WILL PERMANENTLY DESTROY THE GENESIS CORE. The countdown echoed through the chamber. 01:57 01:56 01:55 Damien struggled against the restraints. “Dad… don’t.” Gabriel looked over his shoulder. “If I don’t…” “You’ll die.” “And if you pull it…” Gabriel already knew the answer. Everything Genesis had become… Every connected hospital… Every secure archive… Every research network… Gone. Forever. Sophia stepped beside him. Her voice was calm despite the chaos around them. “What did we promise each other?” Gabriel met her eyes. She smiled sadly. “When we started Genesis.” He remembered. Twenty-five years earlier… Four young scientists had stood in an empty laboratory with nothing but hope. Nathan had laughed as Alessandro pinned the first blueprint to the wall. Sophia had written six words across the top. People before progress. Gabriel clo

Red warning lights flooded the Core Chamber. Damien pulled with all his strength. The pedestal refused to release him. Steel restraints emerged from beneath the glowing phoenix, locking around his wrist. “Gabriel!” Damien shouted. “I’m trying!” Gabriel drove the hilt of the Genesis knife beneath the restraint, forcing against the metal. It didn’t move. The chamber’s mechanical voice echoed again. “Successor integration in progress.” “Four minutes, forty-three seconds remaining.” Sebastian stared in disbelief. “This wasn’t in the Board’s records.” Gabriel rounded on him. “Because the founders hid it from you.” “They knew someone would eventually betray Genesis.” Sebastian slowly lowered the detonator. “They never trusted us…” “They trusted the future.” Inside the evacuation train… Every monitor suddenly came alive. The passengers looked up in confusion. A blue phoenix appeared on every screen. Then Damien’s photograph. Sophia froze. “What is this?” Isabella h

The blinking red light reflected in Damien’s eyes. One charge. One button. One decision. Gabriel instinctively stepped in front of his son. “Sebastian…” “Don’t.” Sebastian Armand smiled as he balanced the remote in his palm. “You still think this is about killing you.” “It isn’t.” Damien kept his pistol trained on Sebastian’s chest. “If you press that button…” “You die too.” Sebastian chuckled. “I accepted my death the day I joined the Board.” “What I don’t accept…” “…is failure.” The massive Genesis door behind Gabriel continued opening. Ancient gears groaned as decades of dust fell from the ceiling. Beyond the doorway… A vast circular control room slowly came into view. Hundreds of dormant monitors lined the walls. At the center stood a single control pedestal. Above it… The silver phoenix emblem rotated slowly in the air. Gabriel’s expression changed. “The Core.” Damien looked at him. “What is it?” “The heart of Genesis.” Sebastian nodded approvingly.

The Foundation Chamber split apart with a deafening roar. The widening chasm swallowed ancient stone, shattered pillars, and abandoned weapons. “Damien!” Elena screamed. “I’m here!” his voice echoed through the dust. She rushed toward the edge, but Daniel caught her before the unstable ground gave way beneath her feet. “It’s collapsing!” he shouted. “You can’t cross!” Across the chasm, Gabriel pulled Damien away from the crumbling ledge just as another section of the floor disappeared into darkness. The remaining members of the Board stood behind Sebastian Armand. None of them moved. None of them looked afraid. Sebastian calmly dusted debris from his sleeve. “It appears the mountain has made its decision.” Gabriel glared at him. “You planned this.” “I anticipated it.” Sebastian corrected. “The difference is important.” Victor Kane stepped away from the Board. For the first time… He stood completely alone. “You’ve gone too far.” Helena looked at him coldly. “You

The Covenant drifted to the floor in two torn pieces. For a heartbeat… No one moved. Victor Kane stared at the shredded document. His shoulders slumped. Twenty-five years of planning… Destroyed in a single tear. A violent tremor ripped through the Foundation Chamber. The ceiling cracked wider. Massive stones crashed onto the floor, forcing everyone to scatter. “Move!” Gabriel shouted. Samuel led the Wardens toward the evacuation tunnel. “Children first!” The rescued children hurried through the narrow passage as researchers carried the remaining Genesis archives behind them. Daniel helped Isabella to her feet. “Can you walk?” “I can.” “Then don’t stop.” Grace and Noah took positions at the rear, providing cover. Marco emptied another magazine toward the advancing Board operatives. “They just don’t know when to quit!” The operatives returned fire. Bullets struck the stone pillars, sending fragments flying across the chamber. Aldo dropped behind cover and fired t
