Beside Her

POV: Eli Hayes

I watch it happen from across the room.

Carroway crossing the floor toward Silver with the specific quality of movement that I have spent a semester identifying as calculated. The way he times his arrival. The way he positions himself in relation to her.

I have been at this gala for forty minutes.

I arrived early, which is not my usual approach to events like this, and I have been near the far column for most of that time, watching the room do what rooms do at formal events.

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Beside Her

POV: Eli HayesI watch it happen from across the room.Carroway crossing the floor toward Silver with the specific quality of movement that I have spent a semester identifying as calculated. The way he times his arrival. The way he positions himself in relation to her.I have been at this gala for forty minutes.I arrived early, which is not my usual approach to events like this, and I have been near the far column for most of that time, watching the room do what rooms do at formal events.Watching Silver specifically. Not the way I have been watching her all semester, with the careful management of someone keeping their own surveillance at a distance they can maintain control of.Just watching.Because she walked in tonight and something was different. The dress is different. The hair is different. But those things are surface and I have never been particularly interested in surfaces. What is different is the quality of how she is standing. No calculation in it.No managed distance b

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Ready

POV: Silver PrestonWoolsey Hall has been transformed again.I notice first the sound, which is different from the Winter Gala. Less string quartet formality. More warmth in it. Jazz, live, from somewhere near the back of the hall, the specific kind that fills the air without demanding attention. Then the lights. Not the fairy lights we hung together in November. These are different, warmer and gold, strung higher across the vaulted ceiling so the whole room glows from above rather than along the walls. The effect makes the Gothic arches look like something out of a different century.Woolsey Hall keeps revealing new versions of itself. That has become the kind of thing I think about now, probably because of literature seminars and Victorian poetry and a semester of being told that spaces and people contain more than their surface presentations.I step through the entrance. The room is already alive with the specific energy of a well-planned event hitting its stride.Yale students in

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   What She Sees

POV: Americus BentleyI have been doing Silver's hair for forty minutes. This is not unusual. Hair requires time, intention, and a willingness to hold the curling iron at the correct angle without rushing the section. What is unusual is the quality of silence coming from the person sitting in front of my vanity mirror.Silver Preston is not a loud person. She does not fill rooms the way I do, which is fine, different people fill rooms differently, and the world would be genuinely overwhelming if everyone operated at my frequency. But she has a specific presence even in silence. A watchfulness. An awareness that communicates even when she is not speaking. The silence she has been sitting in tonight is different. It is not the exhausted silence of the past several weeks, which felt like someone trying very hard to hold something together while also holding something else down at the same time.It is quieter than that.More settled.Something happened.I do not know exactly what. She cam

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   What Actually Happened

POV: Eli HayesI start from the beginning. Not because the beginning is the part that matters most. But because arriving at the complicated part without context is not honesty. It is just the version of honesty that protects the teller."I grew up in Duluth playing hockey. Junior league hockey in Minnesota is not a casual thing. The coaches take it seriously. The scouts take it seriously. Your entire future can turn on a single season."Silver walks beside me.She does not say anything. She is listening the way she listens to everything that matters. With her whole attention."There was a player named Marcus on a rival team. Genuinely talented. The kind of speed and creativity that you do not find often at that level. Scouts were watching him by his second junior season."I pause. We pass beneath a Gothic archway and out into the smaller courtyard beyond."Carroway was on the same circuit. Different team, different residential area, but the same regional competition structure. He and

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Walk

POV: Eli HayesShe keeps pace with me.That is the first thing I notice, coming down the last turn of the spiral staircase and out into the Gothic corridor below. She does not fall behind or pull ahead. She walks beside me with the careful deliberateness of someone who has made a decision and is sticking with it.The February evening outside is the kind that settles into your coat immediately.Clear sky. The temperature has dropped since afternoon. Our breath makes steady white clouds as we cross the first quad, the snow underfoot compacted by a week of foot traffic into something dense and slightly treacherous along the edges of the path.I watch her knee.I cannot help it. I have been watching how she navigates uneven ground since the cobblestones in September, when I caught her mid-fall and she looked at me like I was a specific inconvenience she had not budgeted for.She is managing it.Not easily. But she is managing it.We walk without speaking for a while. It is not uncomfortab

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Four Words

POV: Eli HayesI watch Silver leave the room. The door swings shut behind her.Americus starts to say something about where she is going and whether she is coming back for the fitting.Carroway is still on the pristine duvet. He is watching the door with the specific expression he wears when something has gone the way he intended it to go, which is the expression I have been watching since junior leagues when I first understood what was underneath the easy smile. He looked like that when Silver left the bar on Chapel Street. He looked like that after the party. He looks like that now.I push off from the window ledge.I do not say anything to him. There is nothing worth saying to him in front of this audience at this hour. What I know about Weston Carroway and what I have been working toward saying about it is not a conversation that belongs in Americus's suite with silk ties everywhere and Riley watching from under her champagne-colored dress fitting.I say, "Excuse me," to Americus,

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Cobblestones

POV: Silver PrestonUp close, Yale looms even larger than it did from the shuttle window. The Gothic spires press into the late afternoon sky, their shadows cutting long and dark across the courtyards below. I have competed in arenas built specifically to intimidate, designed with high ceilings and

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Long Way Back

POV: Silver PrestonThe question won't leave me.If I couldn't skate, who was I?It follows me through every MRI scan, every consultation with specialists who speak in careful, measured tones about torn ACLs and damaged meniscus tissue. It echoes through physical therapy sessions at the San Jose sp

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Who Are You Without the Ice

POV: Silver PrestonShe looks like she just stepped out of a board meeting.Perfectly pressed navy blazer without a wrinkle. Blonde hair pulled back in the same severe chignon she wore at the arena. Makeup completely intact despite however many hours she spent in a waiting room down the hall.Leona

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Diagnosis

POV: Silver PrestonThe world comes back in pieces.First, the sound.A steady electronic pulse that echoes from somewhere far away, then closer, then inside my skull.Beep. Beep. Beep. Each tone feels like a small hammer tapping against my consciousness, dragging me back from whatever dark place m
