Chapter 2

Author: Seeky
In the end, Luca and Sofia made Victor go back to the house.

Once I was alone in my bedroom, I opened my encrypted terminal and entered a top-level security code.

Using the highest-level key, reserved for blood heirs, I submitted a request directly to the High Council for command of my own crew.

I chose Portopalo—the most lawless territory in Sicily, with the highest death rate.

Anywhere was better than here. I couldn't stand staying in this place for another second.

Ten minutes later, the system flashed green. Approved.

I closed the terminal and wiped every trace of what I'd done.

A moment later, Victor kicked my door open and stormed in.

"You've got some nerve hiding in here! Isabella, you will apologize to Sofia before tomorrow's banquet. She's a mess right now. Sofia went too far, but she was only trying to toughen you up so you could survive in this family. Everything she did was for the family. You have to forgive her."

I stared at him, and a memory from five years earlier came rushing back.

I'd been making my rounds through the south district when a rival family ambushed us. In the chaos, I got separated from my bodyguards.

A machete came swinging toward my shoulder. Before it could hit me, Sofia burst out of an alley, threw herself in front of me, and took the blow.

To this day, an ugly scar runs across her back.

I could still picture her face covered in blood as she clutched my hand. "Ms. Lombardi, my life is worth nothing. It wouldn't matter if I died. But nothing can happen to you."

That one act of loyalty had been enough. I went against the council and brought her straight into the inner circle.

The three of us became four.

And for years, I thought nothing had changed. Until I finally saw the truth.

For years, she'd used that scar—and the fact that she'd once saved my life—to slowly push me aside in the Lombardi family.

Victor opened his mouth again, but the meeting bell rang before he could continue.

A few minutes later, the council was in session.

Victor casually brought up the next day's plans. "The new underground armory opens tomorrow. I'll take Sofia with me to inspect the latest gear."

I was about to object when Carter Vance, the advisor with the highest clearance, turned to me.

"Isabella, that armory has always been in your name. You're going too. That's core territory you'll be running someday. Go down there tomorrow and show them who's in charge."

I swallowed my refusal and nodded.

Late that night, our group chat started blowing up.

Sofia sent two pictures of guns in a row, followed by a stressed-out emoji.

"Which one should I carry for the inspection tomorrow?"

Victor insisted on the MP7 loaded with armor-piercing rounds for its firepower. Luca argued for the Glock 19X, saying it was better for a woman who needed to draw and return fire quickly.

They argued about it for more than 100 messages.

"Stop, stop, stop!"

Sofia finally cut them off with a voice message. "These are for Isabella. I want her opinion. Sweetie, don't be mad at me anymore, okay? I promise I'll never leave you behind without warning again. Let's make up."

I stared at the screen. Before I could reply, Luca's message appeared.

"Isabella, I'll let you get away with hitting me. But if you keep sulking, you're just being ungrateful! You shouldn't be angry with Sofia. You should thank her. Without her, would you ever have found the courage to fight your way out alone?"

A knock sounded at my door.

Victor stood outside, phone in hand, glaring at me.

"Luca doesn't know the first thing about guns! The MP7 I chose is obviously better. Isabella, I'm your brother, and I'm telling you to say so in the group chat right now!"

I glanced back down at the two guns on my screen.

"These guns..."

Then I looked Victor straight in the eye. "When did you get them on the black market?"

Victor was too busy texting Sofia to think before answering.

"This afternoon, at that private gun shop in the Old Town..."

The words were already out before he realized what he'd said. He froze.

Luca looked at the row of gun barrels pointed at him and finally retreated to his car, humiliated.Natasha leaned against the sandbags and gave an amused whistle."Commander, I had no idea you were engaged this whole time."For the first time, I could talk about the past without feeling anything."He stopped seeing himself as my fiancé a long time ago, so there was no reason to mention it."It had happened three years ago at a family banquet.A capo had too much to drink and joked that Luca looked at Sofia with more desire than he'd ever shown his own fiancée.Sofia's eyes immediately filled with tears. She quickly stepped away from Luca."Hey, that's a nasty joke! Stop it! Isabella is my best friend in this family! I swore that even if I stayed at the bottom forever, I'd never steal my best friend's man!"Luca immediately stepped forward. In front of the entire family, he scoffed, "That was just a joke our elders made years ago after one too many cheap martinis. No one should take it

That night, the searchlights at the base swept over the empty land outside.Natasha didn't hold back as she tore apart Sofia's little game piece by piece."No real soldier would leave a comrade to die in a firefight, let alone string two men along at the same time. Everything she's done has been calculated. She used those two men to steal resources from you, keep you—the rightful heiress—under her thumb, and clear her own path to the top."I'd always told myself that Sofia came from nothing and simply didn't understand how our world worked. But Natasha's words finally shattered that illusion.Natasha cleaned her dagger as she warned me never to turn my back on someone that ruthless. Now that I finally saw Sofia for who she was, I felt sick.I logged into my family's internal network and sent Sofia an official top-level notice ending our friendship and cutting all ties between us. Then I froze her access to all supplies and resources. While I was at it, I banned Victor and Luca from set

The peace didn't last long.Carter called again on the encrypted line, his voice tense. "Isabella, the Don has formed a major alliance with the Corvino family aboard that cruise ship. To prove his sincerity, he's promised to make Portopalo a shared base."I snorted."He's probably too busy drinking and chasing women on that ship to remember where I draw the line. As long as I'm alive, no one is taking this territory from me."Two years ago, I'd tried to set up a private, heavily armed guard unit with my own money.Victor had done everything he could to stop me. "Girls don't need heavy firepower. It only attracts trouble."Then he'd taken my entire weapons allocation and given it to Sofia's private guards instead. All because he wanted her to feel "safer."Now he was doing it again—giving away my territory to strengthen his own position.I had barely finished speaking when another voice cut into the channel."Isabella." Victor's voice was cold and commanding. "You've made your point. No

Early the next morning, Natasha kept her word and took me straight into a real combat zone near the border.Along the way, she made me close my eyes and track people by sound. She also taught me to spot the marks rival families used to identify themselves. At a dimly lit underground market, Natasha gave me my first real test: find the enemy mole meeting a contact somewhere in the crowd. My palms were slick with sweat. Three times, I picked the wrong person and nearly took a bullet for it.Each time, Natasha covered me with calm, steady fire and got me out safely. On my fourth try, I spotted a man nearby pretending to read a newspaper. Half a snake tattoo peeked out from under his sleeve. That was him. I didn't hesitate.I fired once. He dropped, and the crowd scattered.Natasha whistled and gave me a hard slap on the shoulder."Nice shot! When I was training, I once shot a hole through my instructor's hat and had to run six miles as punishment."We both burst out laughing in the smoke-

The range reeked of gunpowder.Natasha stripped an assault rifle with one hand. Then she gave me a playful shrug, as if trying to put me at ease."Sure, I'm a hitwoman, but I'm pretty easy to get along with. Just don't piss me off. I'll have my gun out before you even know what happened."I couldn't help relaxing a little. After that, she took me to the black market to shop for tactical gear.I could tell at a glance that she knew guns and ammo inside out.I hesitated for a long moment before finally telling her the truth. "Natasha, I have clinical face blindness. Without a family tattoo or some other mark to go by, I can't tell friend from enemy. That's why I've never done a hit on my own."Natasha paused, a magazine still in her hand. The playful look vanished from her face."I used to have a blind spot too."She looked me straight in the eye."My instructor was tough as hell, but he trained it out of me. So until you get past yours, I'll train you myself."That word—training—sent a

The helicopter sliced through the clouds. An encrypted call from Carter came through my headset."Isabella!" Carter sounded worried. "Portopalo is still unstable. Keep an eye out for assassins. Be careful around the old guard. You don't know who you can trust yet. Come back alive.""Understood. You take care too."I hung up, my eyes burning.Just then, several new messages popped up in the group chat.Luca had posted a group photo taken on the VIP deck of a cruise ship.Sofia stood in the middle, holding a glass of champagne, with Victor and Luca on either side of her like personal bodyguards. Then Sofia sent another message."Can someone Photoshop Isabella in? A family should be together."A moment later, she posted her own edit. She'd crudely pasted my face onto the body of an armed guard at the very edge of the cruise ship—someone whose job was to take a bullet for the three of them.Victor and Luca immediately filled the chat with praise and emojis.I stared at the screen, memories
