Chapter 1

By the time I finally made it back to the safe house, it was late at night.

The three of them were lounging on the couch, swirling glasses of red wine like they didn't have a care in the world.

Sofia looked up when I walked in and gave the two men a smug look.

"See? I told you she'd make it back alive! I win. That block on the south side is mine."

Victor clicked his tongue.

"Isabella, did you and Sofia plan this whole thing just to screw us over? Last time, it took you 12 whole hours to get back from the casino! This time, you did it in three!"

Victor was the brother I'd brought home when I was little.

His parents had been killed in a war between families. I'd always wanted an older brother, so when I found him, I decided he would be mine.

My father was against it at first.

"A person isn't a stray kitten. You can't just bring someone home and expect him to become family. If he never accepts us, he might turn around and bite the hand that feeds him."

Victor swore to my parents that he'd be a good brother.

In the end, my father took pity on him and let him stay.

Now Sofia was getting all the care and devotion he'd promised me.

"Did you secretly memorize the safe route? I knew it! You can't even recognize your mother. How could you possibly get out of there by yourself? You cheated. You broke the rules and wasted all the effort we put into helping you overcome this weakness!"

That was my fiancé, Luca.

We grew up side by side.

He'd known about my face blindness since we were kids, and for years, he'd never left my side.

Before Sofia came along, we'd faced everything together.

He'd even held my hand and sworn an oath before God.

"As long as I'm alive, I'll protect Isabella with my life."

Yet somehow, he'd become the person who abandoned me most often.

"Rules? All that effort you put into helping me?" I almost laughed. My voice was so hoarse I barely recognized it myself.

"I knew you two would come up with some excuse to get out of paying me," Sofia said.

Sofia pulled my radio from her bag and slapped it down on the table.

"I followed the isolation rules to the letter. She made it back completely on her own. That territory is mine, fair and square."

Victor and Luca froze.

"You really didn't leave her a radio?"

Victor's voice rose sharply. "Sofia, what if she'd gotten killed out there? Why didn't you tell us what you were planning?"

Sofia immediately shrank back, as if he'd frightened her. Her eyes filled with tears.

"You're the ones who agreed to help me train Isabella. And now you're blaming me? Is it because she's your sister and your fiancée? Is that why you suddenly care about what happens to her?"

She bit her lip and stood, looking hurt.

Both men panicked. They reached for her at the same time.

"We're not blaming you. Don't think like that."

Victor's voice softened at once. He sighed and said, "Look, she's not dead, is she? Let's just drop it."

I'm alive, so let's just drop it.

Luca picked up a fresh glass of wine and walked over to me.

"Stop sulking, Isabella. You'd better apologize to Sofia. Look how scared she is. She was only trying to toughen you up."

I stared at him. He actually believed he was right. I slapped him across the face.

"Are you insane?!"

Luca staggered back, stunned, one hand flying to his cheek.

I snatched my radio off the table and pointed at all three of them.

Then I snapped. "I almost got hacked to pieces by 12 men swinging goddamn machetes back there! Meanwhile, you three were sitting here betting on whether I'd make it out alive and fighting over my territory?! And you want me to apologize?"

"Arghhh!"

Sofia suddenly screamed and burst into tears. She ducked behind Victor.

"Victor, she wants to kill me! Look at her—she wants to kill me!"

Still crying, she ran out of the house.

Luca didn't even look at me. He shoved me aside in disgust and ran after her.

"Sofia, I'll drive you home. There's still a firefight going on out there. It isn't safe!"

The shove knocked me off balance. My shoulder slammed into the doorframe, splitting the skin. Blood began to trickle down my arm.

Victor wasn't about to be outdone. He snatched up his car keys and shoved Luca aside.

"I've got her. She's riding in my bulletproof car!"

What a joke. The two men who swore to protect me are fighting over who gets to take home the woman who almost got me killed.

Neither of them even notices I'm bleeding. And neither of them stops to wonder how someone who can't even tell friend from enemy managed to survive a hail of bullets.

Luca looked at the row of gun barrels pointed at him and finally retreated to his car, humiliated.Natasha leaned against the sandbags and gave an amused whistle."Commander, I had no idea you were engaged this whole time."For the first time, I could talk about the past without feeling anything."He stopped seeing himself as my fiancé a long time ago, so there was no reason to mention it."It had happened three years ago at a family banquet.A capo had too much to drink and joked that Luca looked at Sofia with more desire than he'd ever shown his own fiancée.Sofia's eyes immediately filled with tears. She quickly stepped away from Luca."Hey, that's a nasty joke! Stop it! Isabella is my best friend in this family! I swore that even if I stayed at the bottom forever, I'd never steal my best friend's man!"Luca immediately stepped forward. In front of the entire family, he scoffed, "That was just a joke our elders made years ago after one too many cheap martinis. No one should take it

That night, the searchlights at the base swept over the empty land outside.Natasha didn't hold back as she tore apart Sofia's little game piece by piece."No real soldier would leave a comrade to die in a firefight, let alone string two men along at the same time. Everything she's done has been calculated. She used those two men to steal resources from you, keep you—the rightful heiress—under her thumb, and clear her own path to the top."I'd always told myself that Sofia came from nothing and simply didn't understand how our world worked. But Natasha's words finally shattered that illusion.Natasha cleaned her dagger as she warned me never to turn my back on someone that ruthless. Now that I finally saw Sofia for who she was, I felt sick.I logged into my family's internal network and sent Sofia an official top-level notice ending our friendship and cutting all ties between us. Then I froze her access to all supplies and resources. While I was at it, I banned Victor and Luca from set

The peace didn't last long.Carter called again on the encrypted line, his voice tense. "Isabella, the Don has formed a major alliance with the Corvino family aboard that cruise ship. To prove his sincerity, he's promised to make Portopalo a shared base."I snorted."He's probably too busy drinking and chasing women on that ship to remember where I draw the line. As long as I'm alive, no one is taking this territory from me."Two years ago, I'd tried to set up a private, heavily armed guard unit with my own money.Victor had done everything he could to stop me. "Girls don't need heavy firepower. It only attracts trouble."Then he'd taken my entire weapons allocation and given it to Sofia's private guards instead. All because he wanted her to feel "safer."Now he was doing it again—giving away my territory to strengthen his own position.I had barely finished speaking when another voice cut into the channel."Isabella." Victor's voice was cold and commanding. "You've made your point. No

Early the next morning, Natasha kept her word and took me straight into a real combat zone near the border.Along the way, she made me close my eyes and track people by sound. She also taught me to spot the marks rival families used to identify themselves. At a dimly lit underground market, Natasha gave me my first real test: find the enemy mole meeting a contact somewhere in the crowd. My palms were slick with sweat. Three times, I picked the wrong person and nearly took a bullet for it.Each time, Natasha covered me with calm, steady fire and got me out safely. On my fourth try, I spotted a man nearby pretending to read a newspaper. Half a snake tattoo peeked out from under his sleeve. That was him. I didn't hesitate.I fired once. He dropped, and the crowd scattered.Natasha whistled and gave me a hard slap on the shoulder."Nice shot! When I was training, I once shot a hole through my instructor's hat and had to run six miles as punishment."We both burst out laughing in the smoke-

The range reeked of gunpowder.Natasha stripped an assault rifle with one hand. Then she gave me a playful shrug, as if trying to put me at ease."Sure, I'm a hitwoman, but I'm pretty easy to get along with. Just don't piss me off. I'll have my gun out before you even know what happened."I couldn't help relaxing a little. After that, she took me to the black market to shop for tactical gear.I could tell at a glance that she knew guns and ammo inside out.I hesitated for a long moment before finally telling her the truth. "Natasha, I have clinical face blindness. Without a family tattoo or some other mark to go by, I can't tell friend from enemy. That's why I've never done a hit on my own."Natasha paused, a magazine still in her hand. The playful look vanished from her face."I used to have a blind spot too."She looked me straight in the eye."My instructor was tough as hell, but he trained it out of me. So until you get past yours, I'll train you myself."That word—training—sent a

The helicopter sliced through the clouds. An encrypted call from Carter came through my headset."Isabella!" Carter sounded worried. "Portopalo is still unstable. Keep an eye out for assassins. Be careful around the old guard. You don't know who you can trust yet. Come back alive.""Understood. You take care too."I hung up, my eyes burning.Just then, several new messages popped up in the group chat.Luca had posted a group photo taken on the VIP deck of a cruise ship.Sofia stood in the middle, holding a glass of champagne, with Victor and Luca on either side of her like personal bodyguards. Then Sofia sent another message."Can someone Photoshop Isabella in? A family should be together."A moment later, she posted her own edit. She'd crudely pasted my face onto the body of an armed guard at the very edge of the cruise ship—someone whose job was to take a bullet for the three of them.Victor and Luca immediately filled the chat with praise and emojis.I stared at the screen, memories
