Chapter 2

Author: 12 Cents
Sierra pressed two fingers to her temple, clearly losing patience.

"I already told you. I'm only helping Cyrus recover. Can't you be a little more understanding?"

My chest tightened at her words.

I could still remember the moment the system had warned me about my deadline. Desperate, I had begged her, "Sierra, what if I die because we don't get married this time? Would you at least come with me to get the license?"

She had simply brushed me off. "I've told you already. Cyrus is in my past. Stop making a big deal out of it."

When I refused to let it go, she had finally relented. "Fine. Give Cyrus the project you're working on, and I'll marry you."

I had believed her, thinking that if I swallowed my jealousy, let her stay close to her first love, and even handed over the project I'd worked so hard to secure, I'd finally get the future I'd been fighting for.

I was wrong.

Sierra had agreed to marry me, only to stand me up and turn around to marry Cyrus instead. She had given him everything I had sacrificed, and now that she had taken even my last chance at life, she still wanted me to be understanding.

What a joke!

I held out the gift I'd brought. "Happy wedding."

Inside the box was the watch Sierra had bought me ten years ago when she first confessed her feelings. She had spent more than a thousand dollars on it—an enormous sum for two people who could barely afford to eat properly back then.

I'd treasured it all these years because I thought it represented the love we'd built together. Now that things between us were over, it was time to return it to its rightful owner.

Sierra took the box and realized she'd misunderstood me. An awkward expression crossed her face, but before she could speak, Cyrus walked over.

"Sierra, everyone is waiting for you."

He glanced at me as though he'd only just noticed I was there.

"Who's this?"

He pretended not to know me, but there was no mistaking the hostility hidden deep in his eyes. I was certain he hadn't lost his memory at all.

Yet Sierra, who had always prided herself on being an excellent judge of character, failed to see through him.

"Just a friend," she quickly replied. "He came to drop off a gift."

"Thanks." Cyrus broke into a smile. He opened the box right in front of everyone and let out an exaggerated gasp. "Wait... Why an old watch?"

Several people nearby looked over, and whispers quickly spread through the room.

"Giving an old watch at a high-society wedding? Is this guy trying to humiliate them?"

...

Cyrus turned to Sierra with a wounded expression.

"It's okay, Sierra," he said thoughtfully. "I trust you. Your friend must have brought it to wish us well. I'll put it on right now so he won't feel embarrassed."

But when he slipped the watch onto his wrist, he looked reluctant. Sierra shot me an irritated look before immediately comforting him. "You don't like it? Then take it off. You don't have to force yourself."

Cyrus shook his head stubbornly. "No. It's a gift from your friend. I have to wear it."

As the two of them tussled over the watch, it slipped from Cyrus's hand and crashed to the floor. The crystal face shattered on impact.

Without thinking, Cyrus reached down and pressed his palm against the broken glass. In the next instant, a sharp cry escaped his mouth, and he quickly pulled his hand back.

A tiny bead of blood welled from his finger as he frowned. The moment Sierra saw him bleeding, even though the cut was barely more than a scratch, her expression turned furious.

She grabbed the watch by its broken strap and hurled it at me. "I knew you didn't come here with good intentions. Security, get him out!"

She immediately called over the medical staff and hovered around Cyrus, fussing over the tiny cut as though he'd suffered a serious injury.

The watch she'd thrown at me, meanwhile, had sliced across my face. Blood trickled down my cheek, warm against my skin, but I barely felt it.

"Mr. Hanson, please leave!"

The security guards who used to treat me with utmost respect now rushed to please their employer. Four men grabbed hold of me and carried me outside before dumping me onto the gravel.

I hit the ground hard enough to feel as though every bone in my body had been cracked. Unable to get back up, I simply lay there and stared up at the blue sky.

Eventually, my phone vibrated.

Sierra had wired 100,000 dollars into my account, following up with a text.

[Go to the hospital yourself. And if that scar leaves a mark on your face, I really will stop caring about you.]

I didn't accept the money. Instead, I forced myself upright, picked up the shattered watch covered in my blood, and threw it into the nearest trash can.

If she didn't want me, so be it.

For those last seven days, I wanted to live for myself.

"But I really didn't kill Orlando. I'm being framed!"Cyrus pleaded frantically, but much like the boy who cried wolf, he'd lied too many times. By then, Sierra wouldn't believe a single word out of his mouth again.Watching Cyrus squirm with no way to clear his name gave me a sense of grim satisfaction. What went around came around.Sierra had him locked inside the windowless room, raising the whip and bringing it down on him again and again."Did you hurt Orlando like this?" she demanded between blows. "He was the love of my life. How dare you lay a hand on him?"Cyrus screamed and begged her to believe he was innocent, but Sierra was relentless. As she raised the strap again, something I'd once told her suddenly came back to her. I'd warned her that if we didn't get married before the deadline, I would die.Her expression flickered with guilt before she brought the strap down again."Orlando, were you telling the truth? Would you really have died if we didn't get married? I'

It wasn't until the day of my funeral that Sierra managed to pull herself together to lay me to rest.News of my death had already spread throughout the city, and reporters crowded around the funeral service, desperate to uncover the truth behind the scandal that had followed me to the grave.Cyrus stood beside Sierra, holding her hand and trying to calm her."Don't take this so hard. There are a lot of reporters here today. You need to think about how this will affect the company."Sierra let out a cold, bitter laugh, then stepped right in front of the flashing cameras."I owe everyone the truth. I lied to all of you before. Cyrus was my first love, but we ended things a long time ago," she announced."For the past ten years, I have been with my business partner, Orlando Hanson. We kept our relationship private because we wanted to focus on building our careers. But I failed him."I believed Cyrus's lies. I let the fact that he once saved my life blind me into marrying him, and

Cyrus's mind raced, and after a moment, he finally came up with an excuse."When Orlando smashed that bottle over my head, it hurt so badly. Then pieces of my memory started coming back."Sierra studied him for a long moment before giving a small nod."Fine. Until I get to the bottom of everything, I won't hold it against you."Watching her let him off the hook so easily didn't surprise me. She had always favored Cyrus. From beginning to end, that had never changed. She had finally gotten what she'd wanted—a marriage to the man she'd always loved. And with me already dead, there was even less reason for her to let what happened come between her and the man she'd chosen.Cyrus visibly relaxed and quickly made himself scarce. Once he'd left, Sierra sent everyone else away. She had always been terrified of ghosts, yet she sat alone in the morgue beside my body. She wrapped both hands around mine, tears glistening in her eyes."You've lost so much weight in just a few days," she wh

Sierra had always been extremely cautious, which was why she'd installed security cameras throughout the house.Cyrus had no idea about that. The moment he realized she was pulling up the surveillance footage, his heart sank. In his desperation, he clutched his stomach and sank to the floor with a pathetic groan."Ouch! My stomach hurts!"She glanced at him once before turning back to the screen. Even she couldn't overlook the timing of his little performance anymore."There are doctors everywhere," she said evenly. "Go get yourself checked."She kept searching through the recordings. The first footage she pulled up showed the argument between Cyrus and me on the night he'd been injured. She watched him deliberately knock over the chair, throw himself to the floor, and then punch himself in the face. She shot him an icy, piercing glare. Cyrus immediately lowered his head, feigning pathetic remorse. "I'm sorry. I just... I thought you were getting too close to Orlando, and I got

When the security guards remained silent, Sierra's temper flared."Well? Has everyone suddenly lost their voice? Who else has been in here recently?"The guards exchanged uneasy glances. One of them was just about to admit that Cyrus had come by when Cyrus himself hurried into the room.He wore the perfect expression of concern, as though he'd never been there to torture me. But the shock and panic flickering in his eyes betrayed him."Sierra, what's going on?" Cyrus called out, rushing to her side. "Is Orlando sick? Did he say anything?"Sierra barely acknowledged him. Her attention was still fixed on me.Right then, the ambulance arrived. She immediately summoned the paramedics, who rushed me onto the stretcher and connected me to every piece of equipment they could use to try to save me.Yet despite their frantic efforts, the mood inside the ambulance quickly turned grim. The doctor finally looked at Sierra with a heavy expression."I'm so sorry. The patient has no vital si

I was lying motionless on the ground.Sierra took a step toward me, then suddenly stopped as though she'd just realized something."You almost fooled me," she snorted, shaking her head. "It's not April Fools' Day, Orlando. Come on and get up. You scared me and spoiled the food. I'll have to cook it all again."My ghost hovered nearby, watching with a sense of bitter amusement. When someone no longer loved you, even your death could look like another performance. I was lying right in front of her, my skin already pale and my body completely still, yet she didn't recognize what she was seeing.Instead, she started to blame me."I went through all the trouble of coming home after work to see you," she sighed, irritated. "Can you please stop this?"But I was already dead. I couldn't answer her anymore. Her patience finally ran out. She walked over and nudged my body with her foot."Hey! Get up!"My body rolled slightly with the impact. That was when she finally saw the unnatural p
