Chapter 3

Author: 12 Cents
I stopped sending Sierra my usual good-morning and good-night messages, and I no longer bothered replying when she texted me.

On the second day, I went to a dingy gaming lounge she hated, spent the entire night smoking and gaming, and stayed until dawn.

On the third day, I sold every gift she'd ever given me and donated the money to charity. On the fourth, I gathered the photographs we'd taken together over the years and set them all on fire.

"Ms. York is only temporarily blinded by her feelings," the housekeeper advised me. "She still loves you. The two of you built everything together, and it wasn't easy to get where you are now. You should fight for her. Don't let Cyrus take your place."

There was some truth in what he said.

When Sierra had first entered my life, she was an ordinary woman with nothing to her name. The system had ordered me to win her over, so I stayed by her side and helped her build her company from the ground up.

Whenever there was dirty work, I did it. Whenever there was a difficult project, I took it on. More than once, I drank until I ended up in the ER just to close crucial deals for her.

She wanted money. She wanted prestige. She wanted to become a CEO.

I gave her all of it.

When we finally made enough money to buy the mansion we had once dreamed about, Sierra had cried in my arms and promised that she'd love me for the rest of her life.

And yet, in the end, she became the very person who signed my death warrant.

...

I shook my head and flicked my cigarette into the fire consuming our photographs.

The person she truly loved was Cyrus. No matter how hard I fought to get her back, all I'd be doing was humiliating myself.

The housekeeper sighed, then took matters into his own hands and called Sierra.

That evening, I had barely reached the bottom of the stairs when I saw her standing in the living room with a whole display case of designer watches.

"I misunderstood you the other day," she started, unapologetic. "But if you hadn't shown up, Cyrus wouldn't have gotten hurt.

"Anyway, I'm sorry about smashing that gift you brought. Honestly, that watch was so cheap. So, pick something more expensive. You'll come out ahead."

She sounded almost playful, just as she used to, and reached out as though she were about to touch the wound on my face.

I simply stepped away.

She had forgotten that the watch was something she had spent every cent on buying me years ago. Now, she dismissed it as cheap.

Maybe that was what her love had always been worth. Cheap! And I'd been the idiot who cherished it for ten years.

"No thanks," I said nonchalantly, leaning back on the couch. "Give them to Cyrus. He is your husband now."

Sierra opened her mouth, hesitation flickering in her eyes. Before she could say a word, Cyrus sauntered out of a guest bedroom in pajamas, conspicuously flaunting a custom watch on his wrist.

"No need, Sierra," he said, his voice slow and deliberate. "The watches you buy me are worth millions. They're one-of-a-kind pieces. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing something this tacky."

Sierra raised an eyebrow without calling him out. Cyrus suddenly let out an exaggerated gasp and clamped his hand over his mouth.

"Oh, my bad!" he groaned. "I'm just a straight shooter, blurting out whatever comes to mind. Please take no offense, Orlando. By the way, Sierra told me you're her senior from college and that you helped her a lot back then. I should toast you for that."

I snapped my head toward Sierra.

She had promised me this place was our sacred sanctuary, meant strictly for the two of us. But now, she had brought another man into it.

The moment she saw my expression, she clasped her hands together and gave me a pleading look, silently begging me to play along.

But I was no longer the man who bent over backward for her every whim. I was done swallowing this humiliation.

I raised my glass, clinking it against the empty air in his direction. "Don't worry. You weren't saying anything that required a brain."

The smile on Cyrus's face froze, and Sierra's brow shot up.

"Apologize, Orlando!" she demanded.

Cyrus had walked into my home, provoking me. And somehow, I was the one expected to apologize?

Not a chance!

I ignored her and went upstairs. From above, I could hear Sierra soothing Cyrus with all kinds of sweet words, pampering him like a fragile child.

I'd never received that kind of tenderness from her. Not once.

Eventually, the house fell quiet.

I went downstairs to find something to eat, only to discover that Cyrus was still there. He sauntered over with a smug grin plastered across his face.

"Must feel awful having your wife stolen right out from under your nose, doesn't it?" he taunted. "Let me tell you something. I never lost my memory. I was pretending the whole time."

I poured myself a glass of water, barely glancing at him. "Oh."

I knew exactly what he was trying to do. He wanted to provoke me into losing my temper.

But to a man already marked for death, nothing mattered anymore.

"But I really didn't kill Orlando. I'm being framed!"Cyrus pleaded frantically, but much like the boy who cried wolf, he'd lied too many times. By then, Sierra wouldn't believe a single word out of his mouth again.Watching Cyrus squirm with no way to clear his name gave me a sense of grim satisfaction. What went around came around.Sierra had him locked inside the windowless room, raising the whip and bringing it down on him again and again."Did you hurt Orlando like this?" she demanded between blows. "He was the love of my life. How dare you lay a hand on him?"Cyrus screamed and begged her to believe he was innocent, but Sierra was relentless. As she raised the strap again, something I'd once told her suddenly came back to her. I'd warned her that if we didn't get married before the deadline, I would die.Her expression flickered with guilt before she brought the strap down again."Orlando, were you telling the truth? Would you really have died if we didn't get married? I'

It wasn't until the day of my funeral that Sierra managed to pull herself together to lay me to rest.News of my death had already spread throughout the city, and reporters crowded around the funeral service, desperate to uncover the truth behind the scandal that had followed me to the grave.Cyrus stood beside Sierra, holding her hand and trying to calm her."Don't take this so hard. There are a lot of reporters here today. You need to think about how this will affect the company."Sierra let out a cold, bitter laugh, then stepped right in front of the flashing cameras."I owe everyone the truth. I lied to all of you before. Cyrus was my first love, but we ended things a long time ago," she announced."For the past ten years, I have been with my business partner, Orlando Hanson. We kept our relationship private because we wanted to focus on building our careers. But I failed him."I believed Cyrus's lies. I let the fact that he once saved my life blind me into marrying him, and

Cyrus's mind raced, and after a moment, he finally came up with an excuse."When Orlando smashed that bottle over my head, it hurt so badly. Then pieces of my memory started coming back."Sierra studied him for a long moment before giving a small nod."Fine. Until I get to the bottom of everything, I won't hold it against you."Watching her let him off the hook so easily didn't surprise me. She had always favored Cyrus. From beginning to end, that had never changed. She had finally gotten what she'd wanted—a marriage to the man she'd always loved. And with me already dead, there was even less reason for her to let what happened come between her and the man she'd chosen.Cyrus visibly relaxed and quickly made himself scarce. Once he'd left, Sierra sent everyone else away. She had always been terrified of ghosts, yet she sat alone in the morgue beside my body. She wrapped both hands around mine, tears glistening in her eyes."You've lost so much weight in just a few days," she wh

Sierra had always been extremely cautious, which was why she'd installed security cameras throughout the house.Cyrus had no idea about that. The moment he realized she was pulling up the surveillance footage, his heart sank. In his desperation, he clutched his stomach and sank to the floor with a pathetic groan."Ouch! My stomach hurts!"She glanced at him once before turning back to the screen. Even she couldn't overlook the timing of his little performance anymore."There are doctors everywhere," she said evenly. "Go get yourself checked."She kept searching through the recordings. The first footage she pulled up showed the argument between Cyrus and me on the night he'd been injured. She watched him deliberately knock over the chair, throw himself to the floor, and then punch himself in the face. She shot him an icy, piercing glare. Cyrus immediately lowered his head, feigning pathetic remorse. "I'm sorry. I just... I thought you were getting too close to Orlando, and I got

When the security guards remained silent, Sierra's temper flared."Well? Has everyone suddenly lost their voice? Who else has been in here recently?"The guards exchanged uneasy glances. One of them was just about to admit that Cyrus had come by when Cyrus himself hurried into the room.He wore the perfect expression of concern, as though he'd never been there to torture me. But the shock and panic flickering in his eyes betrayed him."Sierra, what's going on?" Cyrus called out, rushing to her side. "Is Orlando sick? Did he say anything?"Sierra barely acknowledged him. Her attention was still fixed on me.Right then, the ambulance arrived. She immediately summoned the paramedics, who rushed me onto the stretcher and connected me to every piece of equipment they could use to try to save me.Yet despite their frantic efforts, the mood inside the ambulance quickly turned grim. The doctor finally looked at Sierra with a heavy expression."I'm so sorry. The patient has no vital si

I was lying motionless on the ground.Sierra took a step toward me, then suddenly stopped as though she'd just realized something."You almost fooled me," she snorted, shaking her head. "It's not April Fools' Day, Orlando. Come on and get up. You scared me and spoiled the food. I'll have to cook it all again."My ghost hovered nearby, watching with a sense of bitter amusement. When someone no longer loved you, even your death could look like another performance. I was lying right in front of her, my skin already pale and my body completely still, yet she didn't recognize what she was seeing.Instead, she started to blame me."I went through all the trouble of coming home after work to see you," she sighed, irritated. "Can you please stop this?"But I was already dead. I couldn't answer her anymore. Her patience finally ran out. She walked over and nudged my body with her foot."Hey! Get up!"My body rolled slightly with the impact. That was when she finally saw the unnatural p
