Chapter 4

Author: 12 Cents
When Cyrus realized I wasn't taking the bait and heard footsteps approaching from the hall, the smugness on his face vanished, and a flicker of panic crossed his eyes.

In a desperate attempt to play the victim, he knocked over a nearby chair, punched himself square in the cheek, and collapsed onto the floor in a weeping, crumpled heap.

"Cyrus! What happened?"

Sierra rushed over at the commotion, checking him from head to toe.

Cyrus clutched his face, whimpering in pain. "I just wanted to apologize to your old friend, but he attacked me!"

"Orlando Hanson!" Sierra snapped, kicking over the takeout containers she'd brought with her. "When did you become so malicious? How could you lay a hand on him?

"I went out of my way to pick up your favorite food. Now, forget it. I'd rather throw it at the dogs than give it to you."

The food spilled across the floor was indeed from my favorite restaurant.

So what? She hadn't even asked me what happened or checked the security footage. She'd simply taken Cyrus's word for it and decided I was guilty.

It made sense. When you stopped loving someone, you stopped trusting them, too.

When I remained silent, she repeated herself, stressing her tone. "What are you waiting for? Apologize to Cyrus!"

Apologize? Fine.

If I was already going to be blamed for something I hadn't done, I might as well make sure the accusation had some truth behind it.

I grabbed the nearest bottle from the table and brought it crashing down on Cyrus's head.

"I'm sorry," I said calmly. "I guess I didn't hit you hard enough the first time. My mistake."

Blood immediately began running from the wound.

"Cyrus!"

Sierra rushed to him, frantically trying to stop the bleeding while calling for medical help. In no time, she broke into a nervous sweat.

She stayed with Cyrus until the ambulance arrived and only then turned her attention back to me. She barked, "Security, lock him in the storage room! Three days! Let him think about what he's done!"

Her eyes were cold with anger. "You enjoy hitting people so much? Then keep it up in there."

She climbed into the ambulance with Cyrus and left without another glance. Several security guards grabbed me and crudely dragged me down the hall.

Worried I might try to escape, they locked me in a windowless room and fastened heavy restraints around my wrists and ankles.

The moment the heavy door slammed shut, darkness engulfed me. I never imagined that the final three days of my life would be spent trapped in a place like this.

I thought that was as bad as things could get, but the worst was yet to come.

Cyrus wasn't planning to let me go that easily.

On the first day, he came back with his head wrapped in gauze and ordered the guards to stop bringing me food and water. For the next three days, he wanted me left completely without anything to eat or drink.

On the second day, he came in and kicked me repeatedly until my stomach churned, and I was left vomiting bitter stomach acid.

By the third day, he'd found a barbed whip. He used it until my clothes were soaked through with blood, leaving my skin covered in raw, bleeding wounds.

"Aren't you afraid Sierra will find out you're doing this?" I said numbly.

"So what if she does?" He merely shrugged. "She's so obsessed with me that she'd never believe your side of the story."

He crouched beside me and patted my cheek. "You're getting out of here soon anyway. Go ahead and test it. Find out who she would believe. If it were me, I wouldn't try that and bring more misery on myself."

He pressed his thumb down on my open wound, watching with sadistic glee as blood soaked through my dark shirt. Only then did he walk out victorious.

He was right about one thing, though. Sierra would never believe me. But by then, it didn't matter anymore because the system countdown had finally reached zero.

The moment the heavy door slammed shut, my consciousness began to fade. Memories of Sierra and me flooded through my mind—the days when we were deeply in love, our shared laughter, and our tender dreams for the future.

For a moment, everything was perfect. Then the memories shattered like glass, and every fragment dissolved into nothingness.

A bitter smile crossed my lips as my arm finally went limp, falling to the floor.

"Sierra, in this life or the next, I never want to meet you again."

...

That evening, Sierra finally returned home from the office and remembered the boyfriend she'd ordered locked away.

She carried a food container to the storage room and pushed open the door.

"Orlando, honey," she called out. "I kept you locked up for three days, so you must be starving. I made you something to help you get your strength back."

There was no answer.

She frowned and slowly looked around the room until her eyes landed on something in the corner. Her pupils contracted, and the food container slipped from her hand.

It crashed to the floor, splattering food across the tiles.

"But I really didn't kill Orlando. I'm being framed!"Cyrus pleaded frantically, but much like the boy who cried wolf, he'd lied too many times. By then, Sierra wouldn't believe a single word out of his mouth again.Watching Cyrus squirm with no way to clear his name gave me a sense of grim satisfaction. What went around came around.Sierra had him locked inside the windowless room, raising the whip and bringing it down on him again and again."Did you hurt Orlando like this?" she demanded between blows. "He was the love of my life. How dare you lay a hand on him?"Cyrus screamed and begged her to believe he was innocent, but Sierra was relentless. As she raised the strap again, something I'd once told her suddenly came back to her. I'd warned her that if we didn't get married before the deadline, I would die.Her expression flickered with guilt before she brought the strap down again."Orlando, were you telling the truth? Would you really have died if we didn't get married? I'

It wasn't until the day of my funeral that Sierra managed to pull herself together to lay me to rest.News of my death had already spread throughout the city, and reporters crowded around the funeral service, desperate to uncover the truth behind the scandal that had followed me to the grave.Cyrus stood beside Sierra, holding her hand and trying to calm her."Don't take this so hard. There are a lot of reporters here today. You need to think about how this will affect the company."Sierra let out a cold, bitter laugh, then stepped right in front of the flashing cameras."I owe everyone the truth. I lied to all of you before. Cyrus was my first love, but we ended things a long time ago," she announced."For the past ten years, I have been with my business partner, Orlando Hanson. We kept our relationship private because we wanted to focus on building our careers. But I failed him."I believed Cyrus's lies. I let the fact that he once saved my life blind me into marrying him, and

Cyrus's mind raced, and after a moment, he finally came up with an excuse."When Orlando smashed that bottle over my head, it hurt so badly. Then pieces of my memory started coming back."Sierra studied him for a long moment before giving a small nod."Fine. Until I get to the bottom of everything, I won't hold it against you."Watching her let him off the hook so easily didn't surprise me. She had always favored Cyrus. From beginning to end, that had never changed. She had finally gotten what she'd wanted—a marriage to the man she'd always loved. And with me already dead, there was even less reason for her to let what happened come between her and the man she'd chosen.Cyrus visibly relaxed and quickly made himself scarce. Once he'd left, Sierra sent everyone else away. She had always been terrified of ghosts, yet she sat alone in the morgue beside my body. She wrapped both hands around mine, tears glistening in her eyes."You've lost so much weight in just a few days," she wh

Sierra had always been extremely cautious, which was why she'd installed security cameras throughout the house.Cyrus had no idea about that. The moment he realized she was pulling up the surveillance footage, his heart sank. In his desperation, he clutched his stomach and sank to the floor with a pathetic groan."Ouch! My stomach hurts!"She glanced at him once before turning back to the screen. Even she couldn't overlook the timing of his little performance anymore."There are doctors everywhere," she said evenly. "Go get yourself checked."She kept searching through the recordings. The first footage she pulled up showed the argument between Cyrus and me on the night he'd been injured. She watched him deliberately knock over the chair, throw himself to the floor, and then punch himself in the face. She shot him an icy, piercing glare. Cyrus immediately lowered his head, feigning pathetic remorse. "I'm sorry. I just... I thought you were getting too close to Orlando, and I got

When the security guards remained silent, Sierra's temper flared."Well? Has everyone suddenly lost their voice? Who else has been in here recently?"The guards exchanged uneasy glances. One of them was just about to admit that Cyrus had come by when Cyrus himself hurried into the room.He wore the perfect expression of concern, as though he'd never been there to torture me. But the shock and panic flickering in his eyes betrayed him."Sierra, what's going on?" Cyrus called out, rushing to her side. "Is Orlando sick? Did he say anything?"Sierra barely acknowledged him. Her attention was still fixed on me.Right then, the ambulance arrived. She immediately summoned the paramedics, who rushed me onto the stretcher and connected me to every piece of equipment they could use to try to save me.Yet despite their frantic efforts, the mood inside the ambulance quickly turned grim. The doctor finally looked at Sierra with a heavy expression."I'm so sorry. The patient has no vital si

I was lying motionless on the ground.Sierra took a step toward me, then suddenly stopped as though she'd just realized something."You almost fooled me," she snorted, shaking her head. "It's not April Fools' Day, Orlando. Come on and get up. You scared me and spoiled the food. I'll have to cook it all again."My ghost hovered nearby, watching with a sense of bitter amusement. When someone no longer loved you, even your death could look like another performance. I was lying right in front of her, my skin already pale and my body completely still, yet she didn't recognize what she was seeing.Instead, she started to blame me."I went through all the trouble of coming home after work to see you," she sighed, irritated. "Can you please stop this?"But I was already dead. I couldn't answer her anymore. Her patience finally ran out. She walked over and nudged my body with her foot."Hey! Get up!"My body rolled slightly with the impact. That was when she finally saw the unnatural p
