Kane’s POV

I don’t know how long I stood there before Jim’s hand landed on my shoulder.

“Boss.” His voice was careful, the way you talk to someone standing too close to a ledge. “Boss, talk to me.”

I held up the card. Didn’t trust my own voice yet.

Jim read it. I watched his jaw tighten, watched twenty years of security training fight against whatever human reaction was trying to climb up his throat.

“Okay.” He said it slow, steady, like he was building a floor under both of us one board at a t

Kane’s POV“Absolutely not.” Jim was already changing lanes, cutting toward the highway that led to my mother’s estate before I’d even said a word. “You are not walking into that house alone, boss. Not tonight. Not with everything we know.”“She said alone.”“She also spent thirty years married to a man who lied to her every day of it. Forgive me if I don’t take her word as gospel right now.”“He’s right,” Celeste said, her voice tight. “Kane, think about it. Julian orchestrates a maze that leads you straight to Marcus. Marcus panics and hands you your mother’s name. Your mother tells you to come alone. Do you see the pattern? Everyone in this story keeps telling you exactly where to go next.”I stared out the window, jaw tight, hating that she was right.“So what, we just ignore her?”“No.” Celeste shook her head. “We go. But we go smart. Jim parks down the road, out of sight. You go to the door alone, like she asked, so whoever’s in there with her doesn’t panic and do something we c

Kane’s POVThe phone sat dead in my hand, screen dark, and for a second none of us said anything at all.“That’s not possible,” I said finally, my voice sounding like it belonged to someone else. “My mother’s been in Geneva for the last two months. She barely knows what city I’m in half the time, let alone—”“Boss.” Jim’s eyes met mine in the mirror, careful, steady. “When’s the last time you actually spoke to her? Not a text. Not through her assistant. Spoke to her.”I opened my mouth to answer and found I couldn’t.Weeks. It had been weeks. She’d called after the hospital, after the baby, brief and clipped and strange in a way I’d chalked up to grief, to distance, to the awkwardness that had always sat between us since my father died. I’d let it go because everything else in my life had been on fire and my mother being distant was nothing new.“Call her,” Celeste said quietly. “Right now.”My hands weren’t steady as I pulled up her contact. It rang four times. Five. I was about to g

Kane’s POVNobody spoke on the drive back to the city.Celeste sat curled against the passenger door, arms wrapped around herself despite the heat blasting from the vents, staring out at the dark tree line like she expected it to start moving. Jim’s knuckles were white on the wheel. I sat in the back with the photo of my father and Edmund Cole still glowing on my phone screen, staring at two young men shaking hands over whatever they’d built together, wondering how many other lies were buried under that same handshake.“We need a plan,” Jim said finally, breaking the silence somewhere past the second exit sign. “Real one. Not reactive. Julian’s had years to build this. We can’t out-patient him by panicking every time he sends a text.”“I know.”“So what’s the plan, boss.”I didn’t answer right away. My mind was still circling the same question, over and over, the one thing that didn’t fit no matter how I turned it.“Why now,” I said slowly. “That’s what’s bothering me. Julian’s had ac

Kane’s POV“That’s not possible.” The words came out before I could stop them. “That’s Marcus. That’s our family lawyer, Jim, I was just on the phone with him an hour ago—”“I know who it is, boss.” Jim’s voice had gone hard, flat, the voice he used when he was furious and trying not to show it. “I ran it twice. It’s a ninety-eight percent match.”I stared at the screen. At the smiling, familiar face I’d known my entire life — the man who’d taught me to sail, who’d sat beside my mother at the funeral holding her hand, who I’d called an hour ago in a blind panic and trusted with every scrap of information I had.The man who had just handed me an address two hours north of the city.“He sent us here,” I said slowly, the pieces sliding into place with sickening precision. “He sent us upstate on purpose. He knew exactly what we’d find, because he’s the one who staged it.”“Kane.” Celeste’s hand tightened around mine. “If Marcus is Edmund Cole, then he’s known about me this entire time. He

Kane’s POV“What do you mean someone we already know.” My hand tightened around hers without meaning to. “Celeste, look at me. Who.”“I don’t know his name now. Whatever name he’s using now.” She was staring at the photo like it might change if she looked long enough. “But that face — I’ve seen it recently, Kane. At one of your events. I remember thinking he looked familiar and telling myself I was imagining it.”“Which event.”“The foundation gala. Three months ago.” Her breath was coming faster now, panic climbing back into her voice even though the danger in this room was gone. “He was standing near the bar. He complimented my dress. I thought nothing of it, there were four hundred people there, Kane, I can’t—”“Think.” I kept my voice steady, even though nothing inside me felt steady at all. “Think hard. Was he with anyone. Did anyone introduce him.”She closed her eyes, pressing her fingers to her temples, dragging the memory back up from wherever her mind had buried it out of se

Kane’s POVShe was sitting in a wooden chair in the middle of an empty room, hands free, no rope, no restraints — exactly the way the photo had shown her, exactly the way Julian did everything, like violence was beneath him and control was so much more elegant.“Celeste.”I crossed the room in three strides and dropped to my knees in front of her, hands going to her face, her shoulders, checking for anything wrong even as she was already grabbing at my jacket, pulling me closer, both of us shaking.“You’re okay,” I said, more to myself than to her. “You’re okay, you’re okay—”“I’m okay.” Her voice cracked on the second word. “He didn’t touch me, he just — he just talked, Kane, he wouldn’t stop talking—”“Where is he.”“I don’t know. He left maybe twenty minutes ago. He said he had somewhere else to be.” She laughed, short and disbelieving, the sound of someone still trying to convince her own body the danger was over. “Like this was an appointment.”Jim was already moving, sweeping th
