Chapter 4

Author: Snowy Sweets
[Finally! The female lead isn’t putting up with her anymore.]

The room descended into chaos as the relatives rushed toward Susan.

She pointed a trembling finger at me. “It’s her! She’s the one who killed my son! Ryan, call the police and have her arrested!”

[The male lead’s mom is completely unhinged. No wonder she raised such a jerk of a son.]

[The female lead’s finally standing up for herself. This is so satisfying!]

[I just hope she’s truly done this time. I’m scared she’ll cave the second the male lead comes back…]

Tears welled in my eyes. “Since you hate me so much, Mrs. Parker, I’ll move out of this house.”

“Rose, don’t say that. You’re upset right now.”

“It’s fine. Stop trying to talk me out of it. The longer I stay, the more it hurts her. I’ve already decided to leave.”

Ryan and Sean exchanged a look.

This clearly wasn’t part of their plan.

Ryan stepped aside and sent a message to Hubert.

Hubert replied, “You know how my mom is. She raised me on her own. It hasn’t been easy. Tell Rose to be more understanding.”

“But… your mom keeps cursing at her. She’s dead set on moving out.”

“Then let her. Once I’m back, I can talk her into coming home.”

“Got it. I’ll leave it for now.”

Of course, I couldn’t hear their conversation.

But thanks to the messages, I knew exactly what was said.

After packing up the things that belonged to me, my friend, Holly Park, helped me call a moving company.

“Rose, are you sure you’re okay?” she asked carefully.

She’d seen with her own eyes how shattered I’d been just a few days ago.

“I’m fine,” I said, shaking my head. “Right now, I just want to find a place to move into as soon as possible.”

Then something seemed to occur to her.

“My brother has a villa. He hasn’t stayed there since he went abroad. You can move in for now until you find somewhere better.”

The messages suddenly flooded in.

[Our dark, obsessive second male lead is finally about to show up! The original story barely gave him any scenes, but honestly, I kind of love his character.]

[He texted the female lead, and she still hasn’t replied. His villain arc just leveled up to max.]

Second male lead? Liam Park?

I didn’t even have his number, only his old contact from middle school.

And that account had been hacked for years, sending me random links every month or two.

Afraid they were viruses, I’d never opened any of them.

I even muted the notifications.

So, I’d missed the message he sent me a week ago.

He wrote: “Do you need help?”

That same night, news broke all over Ashford that the rescue team was searching the river for Hubert.

A video of me crying during an interview went viral online.

Many people felt sorry for Hubert’s tragic death and sympathized with me.

Liam’s message had been sent that very day.

I hadn’t seen his message back then, so of course, I never replied.

After thinking for a moment, I decided to send a polite response anyway: “No, thank you.”

He replied almost instantly: “Alright.”

That short exchange brought back the memory of the day Hubert confessed to me.

He’d asked me to meet him by the grove next to the school building.

The wind that day was strong, whipping my hair across my face.

As I brushed it aside, I looked up and saw Liam standing on the top-floor balcony.

He leaned casually against the railing, his dark eyes calm as they followed me.

I looked at him for a moment.

Then lowered my gaze, smiling as I said to Hubert, “Okay.”

When Hubert leaned in and kissed my cheek, I looked up again.

The boy at the end of the corridor was already gone.

Only the branches above us kept swaying wildly in the wind.

Unbelievable!"Hubert was no match for the two of them. Within moments, Ryan and Sean had him pinned to the ground, unable to fight back."You pathetic scumbag! You screwed yourself over, and now you’re blaming us? "But it’s fine. I know you were forced by your family. Divorce him, and we’ll get married right away, okay?""No." I stepped back two paces."Still putting on that act, huh? You faked your death and ran off overseas to play house with your mistress. Did you enjoy it?"Hubert’s eyes trembled, disbelief written all over his face. His voice quivered. "You… how did you find out? Did Ryan and Sean tell you?""Yes. And I should thank them for that," I didn’t deny it. "At first, I didn’t believe it. Then they gave me the account you shared with your mistress. I saw your videos. You two looked so happy together.""Rose, I’m sorry. I was wrong. I really know I was wrong."Regret and despair tangled in his eyes as he almost fell to his knees."Honey."Liam stepped out of the Bentley. He’d been picking me up from work every day lately.I walked over and took his arm. "Honey, this man keeps pestering me. I’m scared."The tall, broad-shouldered man glanced past Hubert, pulled me behind him, and

“Then why aren’t you putting me down?”“Because I’m drunk and I need your help.”I was speechless.“Right. That’s what drunk looks like, huh?” I thought.“Can I, honey?” I didn’t answer. The only reply was the sound of water spilling over the edge of the tub.…The next morning, I woke to find myself turned toward the wall, his arm loosely wrapped around my waist. His slow, steady breaths brushed against the back of my neck.Flashes of last night—his hands, the warmth of his touch—drifted through my mind, and heat crept up my cheeks.[Wait, what? A loveless engagement stood no chance against a resurrected first love, or so Hubert believed. When he got home, Susan threw herself into his arms, sobbing hysterically.“Did you see the news? That shameless girl married someone else! Didn’t I tell you from the start she was trouble?”“She doesn’t know I’m alive. If she did, she’d leave him for me.”He shook her off irritably. “Take down those memorial photos in the living room. They’re depressing.”But when he opened the bedroom door, he froze. The room was a mess. The glass from their favorite framed photo lay shattered across the floor. On the photo wall, every picture of them had been torn clean in half. Enraged, he called out, “Mom! Did you do this? You didn’t like her, fine, you drove her out. But why the hell did you destroy everything?”“I swear it wasn’t me! That ungrateful girl did it herself! You think I’ve got time for childish tantrums like that?”“Don’t lie to me! Look at these photos, every single one has her face scra

She made sure to emphasize the words “dating show,” hoping it might stir something in Hubert. But he wasn’t even listening. “Mm. Sounds great.”He hurried to pack his things, booked the first flight home, and headed straight for the airport. On the way, a thought struck him.Rose must’ve thought he was dead. That must be the reason she’d given up and agreed to her family’s arrangement. The idea actually eased him a little. When he called Ryan, he said, “Why are you panicking? The second she finds out I’m alive, she’ll drop that engagement in a heartbeat.”“Uh… you really think so, Hubert?”“That Liam guy? I couldn’t stand him even back in high school. Whenever Rose and I were together, he’d just stand there staring like a creep. Imagine how humiliating it’ll be for him if I crash their wedding in front of everyone.”But in the end, he couldn’t wait that long. The moment his plane landed, he pulled out his phone and called her number. The second she heard his voice, she’d take him back.

I wrapped my arms around his waist. The muscles at his sides tensed for a brief moment as I rested my head gently against his chest. The camera flash froze in place, capturing the perfect shot.Right then and there, our families finalized the engagement between me and Liam. That photo made headlines the very same night. The engagement ceremony followed soon after. When it ended, I spotted Ryan and Sean standing near the exit, both looking grim. The moment they saw me, they rushed over as if demanding justice.[Oh for god’s sake, what kind of spell did the male lead cast on these two? They’re everywhere.][She didn’t even invite them! They couldn’t get in the first time, and now they’re lurking outside like watchdogs.]Ryan frowned, his tone accusatory. “Rose, it hasn’t even been that long since Hubert passed, and you’ve already found someone new?”I almost laughed. ““He’s gone. I can’t spend the rest of my life in mourning, can I?”“He’s not actually—” Sean started, clearly panicked,
