Chapter 2

Author: Snowy Sweets
“Do you think Hubert might still be alive?”

Ryan froze for half a second before quickly regaining his composure.

“H-how could that be? They already recovered his clothes and shoes from the river. You saw them yourself.”

A week ago, Hubert’s car had plunged into the river late at night.

The police concluded he’d been swept away by the current while trying to escape from the vehicle.

I’d stayed by the riverbank all night without closing my eyes.

The rescue team searched for days and only found his jacket and shoes. I’d been so devastated I nearly passed out.

Today was supposed to be our wedding day.

I held our photo and cried until my head throbbed.

And now, to learn all of it was staged by him…

My grief had been nothing but a cruel joke.

[The male lead really outdid himself this time. Cheating and playing the victim? That’s just pathetic.]

[Right? At first, I thought this story was going to be a sweet romance. Turns out it’s just heartbreak served cold.]

[The female lead’s such a stunning socialite from Ashford’s high society. If he doesn’t want her, I’ll take her any day.]

The nausea and ache in my chest eased a little, thanks to those comforting comments.

Ryan spoke again. “Rose, don’t let your thoughts run wild. If Hubert could see you right now, he’d be heartbroken.”

Heartbroken, huh…

What an ironic word.

I had even thanked him for helping me arrange Hubert’s funeral just this morning.

It turned out they were all just the same underneath.

Following the comments’ hints, I searched for the account of Hubert’s mistress on social media.

That was when I discovered she’d appeared right under my nose countless times.

She was a small influencer under Hubert’s media company, named Jenna Song.

Her account was called “ParkerAndJenna.”

The latest video showed a street in Westin, where two people held hands and embraced like they’d finally reached the end of a long journey.

And I could recognize that small mole on the man’s hand.

The caption read: “In the year of purest love, he left behind the fiancée his family had chosen for him and crossed more than ten thousand kilometers to find me, all the way from Ashford to Westin.”

The video went viral, and the comment section was filled with praise for their ‘beautiful love story.’

“It’s like a real-life forbidden romance! A billionaire chasing his lover across the world—so romantic!”

“This plot feels familiar. The ‘billionaire-chasing-his-runaway-lover’ story just came to life for real! Ahhh!”

“Rich men really are hopeless romantics. Where can I find a sugar daddy?”

Then the messages appeared again.

[Are these commenters even real? This isn’t romance, it’s an affair scandal.]

[Fiancée his family had chosen for him? Please. Stop glorifying the cheater. The fiancé the female lead’s family set her up with before was literally supposed to be the story’s main villain!]

Hubert and I weren’t in an arranged marriage.

We met back in high school.

By then, my parents had already chosen a match for me.

He was Liam Park, the heir to one of Ashford’s most powerful families.

But I didn’t want to marry him.

My parents’ marriage had been built on interests, not love.

Growing up, I watched them act affectionate in public, only to bring different lovers home in private.

The rare times they were together always ended in shouting and blame.

I was tired of that kind of hollow, broken relationship.

So, I rejected the idea of marrying for convenience.

During my second year of high school, Hubert was assigned the seat behind me.

When I was at my lowest, he came into my life like a ray of sunshine—warm, persistent, and impossible to ignore.

Saying yes to his confession felt completely natural.

We grew together from high school sweethearts to a couple planning our wedding.

Not long ago, we even returned to our old school to give a talk.

Everyone envied us as the perfect match.

People said our story was a school romance come to life, and I believed them.

I truly thought I’d found real love.

"What the hell’s wrong with you? Haven’t we done enough to help you?""We almost offended the Park family because of you, and instead of thanking us, you’re throwing a tantrum. Unbelievable!"Hubert was no match for the two of them. Within moments, Ryan and Sean had him pinned to the ground, unable to fight back."You pathetic scumbag! You screwed yourself over, and now you’re blaming us? I even stood up for you at their engagement party!"By the time they were done, Hubert was sprawled on the floor, battered and humiliated. That was when his phone rang.It was Jenna. Her shrill sobs came through the line. The dating show’s asking me to pay a penalty. All the money I made from the account these past months will be gone. Can you send me some more?""Get lost. I’m broke. "But it’s fine. I know you were forced by your family. Divorce him, and we’ll get married right away, okay?""No." I stepped back two paces."Still putting on that act, huh? You faked your death and ran off overseas to play house with your mistress. Did you enjoy it?"Hubert’s eyes trembled, disbelief written all over his face. His voice quivered. "You… how did you find out? Did Ryan and Sean tell you?""Yes. And I should thank them for that," I didn’t deny it. "At first, I didn’t believe it. Then they gave me the account you shared with your mistress. I saw your videos. You two looked so happy together.""Rose, I’m sorry. I was wrong. I really know I was wrong."Regret and despair tangled in his eyes as he almost fell to his knees."Honey."Liam stepped out of the Bentley. He’d been picking me up from work every day lately.I walked over and took his arm. "Honey, this man keeps pestering me. I’m scared."The tall, broad-shouldered man glanced past Hubert, pulled me behind him, and

“Then why aren’t you putting me down?”“Because I’m drunk and I need your help.”I was speechless.“Right. That’s what drunk looks like, huh?” I thought.“Can I, honey?” I didn’t answer. The only reply was the sound of water spilling over the edge of the tub.…The next morning, I woke to find myself turned toward the wall, his arm loosely wrapped around my waist. His slow, steady breaths brushed against the back of my neck.Flashes of last night—his hands, the warmth of his touch—drifted through my mind, and heat crept up my cheeks.[Wait, what? Beautiful scenery had a way of healing what words couldn’t.Still, during those first few nights, I often woke up in tears for no rea

A loveless engagement stood no chance against a resurrected first love, or so Hubert believed. When he got home, Susan threw herself into his arms, sobbing hysterically.“Did you see the news? That shameless girl married someone else! Didn’t I tell you from the start she was trouble?”“She doesn’t know I’m alive. If she did, she’d leave him for me.”He shook her off irritably. “Take down those memorial photos in the living room. They’re depressing.”But when he opened the bedroom door, he froze. The room was a mess. The glass from their favorite framed photo lay shattered across the floor. On the photo wall, every picture of them had been torn clean in half. Enraged, he called out, “Mom! Did you do this? You didn’t like her, fine, you drove her out. But why the hell did you destroy everything?”“I swear it wasn’t me! That ungrateful girl did it herself! You think I’ve got time for childish tantrums like that?”“Don’t lie to me! Look at these photos, every single one has her face scra

She made sure to emphasize the words “dating show,” hoping it might stir something in Hubert. But he wasn’t even listening. “Mm. Sounds great.”He hurried to pack his things, booked the first flight home, and headed straight for the airport. On the way, a thought struck him.Rose must’ve thought he was dead. That must be the reason she’d given up and agreed to her family’s arrangement. The idea actually eased him a little. When he called Ryan, he said, “Why are you panicking? The second she finds out I’m alive, she’ll drop that engagement in a heartbeat.”“Uh… you really think so, Hubert?”“That Liam guy? I couldn’t stand him even back in high school. Whenever Rose and I were together, he’d just stand there staring like a creep. Imagine how humiliating it’ll be for him if I crash their wedding in front of everyone.”But in the end, he couldn’t wait that long. The moment his plane landed, he pulled out his phone and called her number. The second she heard his voice, she’d take him back.

I wrapped my arms around his waist. The muscles at his sides tensed for a brief moment as I rested my head gently against his chest. The camera flash froze in place, capturing the perfect shot.Right then and there, our families finalized the engagement between me and Liam. That photo made headlines the very same night. The engagement ceremony followed soon after. When it ended, I spotted Ryan and Sean standing near the exit, both looking grim. The moment they saw me, they rushed over as if demanding justice.[Oh for god’s sake, what kind of spell did the male lead cast on these two? They’re everywhere.][She didn’t even invite them! They couldn’t get in the first time, and now they’re lurking outside like watchdogs.]Ryan frowned, his tone accusatory. “Rose, it hasn’t even been that long since Hubert passed, and you’ve already found someone new?”I almost laughed. ““He’s gone. I can’t spend the rest of my life in mourning, can I?”“He’s not actually—” Sean started, clearly panicked,
