Chapter 3

Author: Existence
In the emergency stairwell, I leaned against the cold wall, my body shaking. I stubbornly kept my head up to force the tears back down.

Just then, Simone showed up.

The sound of our breathing filled the tiny space.

She walked up to me in silence, looking at my hands, where my fingers were clenched so tightly that the knuckles had gone white. Using a gentle force, she slowly pried my fingers open.

Her hands were warm—so warm that I couldn't understand what was happening.

She raised one hand and gently wiped away the tear that had escaped from the corner of my eye.

"Don't cry," she said softly. "I know you're upset."

My heart jolted.

"Jerry has always been blunt to a fault. He might not say the nicest things sometimes, but he means no harm. Stop trying to compete with him, okay?"

My breathing grew strained. I closed my eyes, but the tears fell anyway.

The next day, I submitted my resignation letter to the HR department. The manager was a little taken aback, but he processed it without uttering a single word.

The moment I walked out of the office building, I let out a heavy exhale. The sunlight was blinding, but it allowed me to feel the warmth of a new start.

The three years were up. I got my freedom back at last.

My phone buzzed with a message from Simone. "It's the company's anniversary gala tonight. You need to be there."

Just like always, she was giving me a command. I was going to delete her message, but I decided against it. I figured it would be the final act to make a clean break from the past.

Once I arrived at the venue, I found a quiet corner and stood there, detached from the rest of the lively extravagance.

Jerry was the center of attention, looking dazzlingly handsome in the haute couture suit Simone bought specifically for him.

Now that he had taken over the Mooncradle project, with Simone's eager support and heavy-handed promotion, he became the rising star of the industry.

Everyone complimented him on being both handsome and talented, saying that Simone had found herself an extremely capable right-hand man.

Meanwhile, I was nothing more than the stepping stone that enabled his success.

Suddenly, the company's promotional video playing on the screen in the middle of the hall was replaced by a series of explicit photos of Simone and me in bed together.

The crowd broke into an uproar, and their voices flooded my ears.

"What the hell? Isn't that Isaac Griffin?"

"I can't believe that a man as principled as Jerry would have someone so shameless for a brother!"

My blood ran cold. Instinctively, I glanced at Jerry, who was standing among the crowd, his smile smug.

Amid the chaos, Simone barreled through the crowd and marched up to me, scowling.

"You've got some nerve, Isaac!" she snarled viciously at me. "How dare you stoop to such dirty tricks just to latch onto me! You disgust me!"

I looked at her and abruptly laughed.

"It wasn't me," I said calmly.

"How dare you try to deny it now!" Simone screamed at me.

"It was Jerry's doing." I looked her in the eye. "Do you believe me?"

Jerry came over, his expression mocking. "I would never stoop to such underhanded tactics, Isaac, but I never expected you to do so either."

As always, he pretended to be all righteous and superior.

Simone also scoffed at the notion. "Why would I believe you? Who else besides you could've gotten those photos?"

"I didn't do it!"

But Simone raised her hand and slapped me. The force made me stumble backward, and I crashed right into the champagne tower behind me.

The sound of shattering glass mixed with the screams that filled the hall. It was complete chaos. The glass shards flew everywhere, cutting up my arms and face. The blood immediately oozed out, but I didn't feel any pain from the wounds.

The pain in my heart drowned out all other sensations.

Simone didn't even look at me. She grabbed Jerry and assured him, "Don't worry, Jerry. I'll keep you safe."

Holding him protectively, she walked out of the hall without looking back, leaving me alone in the mess.

I couldn't remember how I managed to leave the hall. All I remembered was the butler, Albert Smith, rushing over to take me to the hospital.

My wounds were cleaned and stitched up. The doctor told me I was fortunate that none of the glass shards had stabbed me in the eyes.

However, now that new scars had been added to the old one on my face, it would be even harder for me to recover.

I lay in the hospital bed, awake the entire night.

The day after the celebratory party, I submitted my resignation to Apex Tech's main headquarters. Now that things were running smoothly at the Abellian branch, my job was done. I wanted to take a break.I wanted to see the world and indulge in some of the things I enjoyed doing. On the day I left the company for good, I saw Simone outside the building. She was leaning against a car, holding a bouquet of white roses, her expression worn. When she saw me coming out with a box in my arms, she hurried forward."Isaac! You're leaving?""Yes.""Where are you going?""I don't know yet. I'll probably just travel around."After a long silence, Simone handed me the flowers. "These are for you."I didn't take the bouquet. "You can keep the flowers, Ms. Murphy."Her hand froze in the air, and the light in her eyes slowly dimmed. "I… I just wanted to say goodbye.""Goodbye," I replied, giving a curt nod before walking past her to grab a cab."Isaac!" Simone called out from behind with a

Simone went overboard in her attempts to make it up to me. She tried to give me 30% of the shares in Murphy Group, but I returned the agreement without signing it.She bought the entire office building where my company's office was, saying she was giving it to me to use as my office, but I had Connor refuse it on my behalf as well.Simone even visited my parents, begging for their forgiveness in the hopes that they would put in a good word for her.My parents called me, their voices filled with heartache as they told me, "We heard about what you've been through all these years, Isaac. Simone hurt you, and we… failed to protect you. No matter what you decide to do, you have our support."I held the phone, my eyes tearing up a little. That was all I needed. My family's understanding and support mattered more than anything else.Under my leadership, the project with Murphy Group proceeded smoothly. "You saved her life, huh?" I repeated, my chuckle disrupting the heaviness of the atmosphere.I walked up to Jerry and looked down at him. "Did you really get that scar from a fire, Jerry?"His eyes flickered, but he stubbornly shouted, "Of course! How else could I have gotten it?""Is that so?" I drawled. "Why do I recall you falling off a tree when you tried to steal mangoes from the neighbor's garden when you were ten years old? A branch had cut you on the way down, didn't it?"Jerry's face turned ghostly pale. "S-Stop lying!""You know full well whether or not I'm lying," I retorted, my voice clear as I leaned in. "You didn't even go to the abandoned factory that day—because you were at home after Mom sent you to your room for secretly eating the cake in the fridge that you weren't supposed to touch."Simone whipped her head up to look at me, her eyes flickering with shock. "Isaac… Back then, the boy in the fire…"I met her gaze. "It was me."She staggered backward, just ba

After work, I went down to the basement parking lot to get into my car when Jerry rushed over and stood in my way. With his bloodshot eyes and disheveled clothing, he looked nothing like the proud and sophisticated man he used to be. Instead, he was more like a screaming lunatic."Isaac!" he bellowed. "Why did you come back? You decided to leave, so why did you bother coming back?"I calmly looked at him and said, "I'm just doing my job.""Your job, huh? I know you're doing this on purpose! You're just playing hard to get to seduce Simone again, aren't you?"His face was twisted with jealousy as he continued, "You're such a devious bastard! Ever since we were kids, you've always tried to steal my things! First, you wanted to steal Mom and Dad's love, and now, you've come back to steal my woman! Why won't you just die?"Jerry raised his fist and swung it at my face, but I easily caught it, my gaze frosty."It was always you who tried to compete with me, Jerry. You're the one who

After the meeting ended, Simone immediately ran after me."Isaac!" She stopped me in the corridor, her attitude the meekest I'd ever seen from her."Are you free this evening? I'd like to… treat you to dinner to welcome you back."Jerry also came after us, his smile stiff as he hooked his arm around Simone's."That's right, Isaac. Since you just got back, we should meet up for a family meal."But Simone subtly pulled her arm away, and that simple reaction made Jerry's face go pale.Honestly, they amused me."That won't be necessary, Ms. Murphy," I politely declined. "I already have plans tonight."I walked past her to leave, but she called out to me once more, her voice frantic."Isaac! Can't we… even be friends?"I stopped and turned back around. "I don't think we were ever friends, Ms. Murphy."This time, along with my team, I left the building without pausing.Once we were in the car, my assistant, Connor Lewis, couldn't resist prying for gossip."Mr. Griffin, Ms. Murph
