LOGINThree hours later, I stood outside the wedding venue in a dress I'd borrowed from Chloe's closet. It was sleek, black, and entirely inappropriate for a wedding guest or even the bride who was exceptionally late.
Fortunately Dan was sweet enough to send us the footage from the hallway to the room Jace and his whore booked. The walls are thin to a fault so besides the footage of them shoving their tongues down each other's throat before they even made it to the room, there was also a recording of what he had said and the back and forth moans.
Chloe stood on one side of me, and our friend Mira on the other. Mira ran a local blog about city gossip since her senior year in high school. Since she couldn't bag a job as a journalist she decided to take the blog seriously, and the gleam in her eye told me she already knew exactly what kind of story this was about to become.
"You sure about this?" Mira asked quietly.
"I've never been more sure of anything. Jace will pay for ruining my life."
This was enough evidence to claim full custody of Lily, not like we were ever married. If he could cheat on his wife to be on the eve of their wedding he's no responsible husband or father.
The doors to the venue were closed. Inside, I could hear the murmur of voices, the warm-up strum of the guitarist. Any minute now, they'd realize the bride wasn't there and Jace will start to panic,. putting up a front.
But knowing how cunning he is, I won't let him get to that part.
I pushed open the doors, and ignored the stares and shocked murmurs as I walked down the aisle like I'd practiced a hundred times, but this time my spine was straight and my eyes were fixed on the man at the altar. Jace stood there in his perfect suit, his face cycling through confusion, hope, and then a deep frown when he saw my expression and what I was wearing.
I stopped a few feet away from him.
Jace forced a smile. "What are you wearing? It's a wedding, Eva, not a funeral.” He sighed, and shook his head. “But it's okay. You can wear whatever you want, what matters is that you're here, we can still—"
"Hmmm. I thought my dress might piss you off. Did I pick the wrong shade of black?”
His smile flickered. He walked down the altar and grabbed my arm out of sight. "What are you doing?"
"What I should have done last night…” I raised my voice, “...when I found you in a hotel room with your business partner."
The orchestra stopped at once as the gasps echoed round the church, it would've been comical if I wasn't hurt. I turned to Chloe and exhaled when I saw her shut Lily's eyes and put a headphone over her ear.
I don't want my daughter watching her family fall apart.
“What is wrong with you?” Jace moved back, feigning hurt. “It's one thing if you're late and inappropriately dressed to our wedding Eva and I forgive that because I love you but I won't have you doubt my loyalty to you.”
“Oh really? Do you not remember me walking into Marquette hotel last night? Do you not remember me spilling champagne on your mistress?”
Jace was stupid in certain ways and that helped me plan this out very well, rather than defending himself he'd try his best to shift all the blame on me. “Marquette hotel? Baby you know if there's any place I hate in this world is a rundown hotel with history of suicides, cheating, death.” He tried to reach for my hand but I moved back.
“Well you must have a kink for that then—”
“Eva!” His mother interrupted me, shooting up. “What is all this nonsense!?” She walked out of the pew and to where we stood. “First you came late to your own wedding and now?! Now you accuse my son of cheating? What is wrong with you? If he wanted someone else he wouldn't have agreed to this wedding and that child.”
I almost scoffed. “That child? What child? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you mean his child. We're getting married because he’s taking responsibility for his actions. Are you teaching your son to not take responsibility for his mistakes and actions? Is that what this is? Make it look like he's doing me a favor.”
“You insolent child! After all we've done for you.” Her hand shot out, almost hitting me. “What were you doing at this hotel you claimed to catch my son with another woman in?”
Jace clutched his chest as if realizing something. “Di–were you cheating on me, Eva?”
The crowd erupted into another murmur, half of them looking at me in disgust.
“Oh, please. Like I'll stoop so low to your level. I got an anonymous text about you cheating on me and that was the address given to me.”
His mother chuckled. “Does that sound believable to you? I should've known when you came with that lie about being pregnant for my son that you'll be a problem. This wedding is over. Get out! Get out this instant, I never want to see you near my son again.”
"Oh right, I think I have proof." I reached into my clutch and pulled out my phone, almost jumping in satisfaction when Jace’s face fell.
“Leave, Eva! This wedding is over. I want nothing to do with you!”
"Why the rush? I'll leave okay, right after you explain to these people what you said about me and my daughter. About me and Lily being a package to impress your stepbrother? I believe so. About how after the wedding, you'd deal with me?"
The guests were in full uproar now.
He suddenly stepped toward me, and desperately grabbed my arm. "What evidence? Stop this Eva, We can talk about this. Think about Lily—" He looked at the crowd. “No need to panic everyone, there's no evidence of anything and I've been loyal to my wife, she's just emotional after our fight last —”
"I am thinking about Lily." I yelled, pushing him away. "I'm thinking about how she deserves a father who doesn't see her as a prop. I'm thinking about how I deserve a partner who doesn't lie to my face for years. You don't get to marry me, Jace. You don't get to use me. You don't get anything from me ever again."
I shoved my phone with the footage playing into one of the other guests' hands after airdropping it into as many people's phones as I could find.
The woman closed her mouth as she watched, before passing it to Jace's mother. Whose face morphed into shock, surprise, embarrassment.
I snatched my phone back and exhaled in satisfaction as everyone stared at their phone with shock, the mothers shutting their children's ears.
“I'm sorry you all came here for a wedding that's supposed to be perfect today. But I'm not sorry for saving myself from a man who never loved me." I looked back at Jace one last time. "I hope she was worth it."
I turned around and walked back down the aisle, Chloe handing Lily to me. She looked up at me with her big dark eyes, so like Jace's it hurt, and kissed my cheeks, giggling.
She looked back at the altar, and giggled again. "Bye Daddy! See you at home! Mummy has cake for you.”
Jace doesn't deserve such an innocent child.
The plane touched down in New York just before noon, and the moment we landed I massaged stress on my shoulders like a concrete blanket. The private terminal was quiet when we got to the same black car waiting, Dante quickly got into his own car and drove away. Vanessa gave me a look I couldn't read and followed him in another car. I stood there on the tarmac for a moment, my suitcase in hand, watching the two cars disappear through the gate. Then I climbed into the back of the other car, gave the driver the hospital address, and leaned my head against the window as the city blurred past the windows.I couldn't wait another second to see her. When I arrived, the nurses at the front desk smiled when they saw me. “You're back. How was the trip?”“Like every other, stressful.” I pulled out a bag of snacks and souvenirs I got for them and placed it on the counter. “Here.”Both of them on duty broke into a wide smile. “Thank you Ms Bishop.” The first one grabbed it.I nodded. “Where's she
After the door clicked shut and Vanessa's footsteps faded down the hallway, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and slumped against the desk, my lips still tingling, and the memory of his fingers inside of me doing things to my insides that I didn't have time to deal with.Dante was still standing by the door, watching me with that calm, very infuriating expression, like he hadn't just had me moaning on his desk five minutes ago. I scoffed, pushed off the desk, and dragged my dress down. I walked toward him, quickly bent down to grab my clutch, and when I straightened up, he was right there, my head almost hitting his chest. “Why are you in such a hurry?” He raised a brow and his hand came up to my face. I should have stepped back, but when his thumb traced my lower lip, I forgot what I was even going to do.He leaned in, and kissed me again…I kissed him back for one stupid second, maybe two, before I found the strength to press my palm against his bare sexy chest and push
I woke to a soft sea of sunlight on my face. Streaming through an unfamiliar window and curtains spread open. I turned around and buried my face into the soft pillow infused with the intoxicating smell of woods and cedar. This feels…nice. The events of last night, like a broken dam, suddenly flooded into my brain. I sprang up so fast I winced from the pain between my legs.Uh…I shut my eyes and silently screamed into my palm remembering how we drove back to the hotel and he carried me in because I couldn't walk, still blinded by desire.Oh Eva, you’ve done it again. You really have. If I get a penny for every it I've done again and again, I'd be a billionaire. I stared at the windows facing the London skyline and a bed that could fit four people. He was nowhere in sight and his jacket was draped over the chair near the window, his tie was wrapped around the lamp like he'd thrown it there. The other side of the bed was cold, and the sheets smooth, like he didn't sleep there at all or l
I pushed through the sea of black gowns, red gowns and sparkling jewels with my clutch to my chest, my heart pounding so loud I was sure everyone could hear it. I scanned the room for Priya, or a clock, anything that would tell me how much damage I've done by oversleeping. The orchestra was playing something soft and jazzy, and the guests were mingling near the bar and the hors d'oeuvre stations, so at least the world hasn't ended.Yet.I spotted Priya near the stage, talking to a man in a tuxedo. I made my way toward her, weaving between clusters of conversation, when she saw me her eyes widened."You're alive," she gave me a once-over. “And gorgeous.”"Thank you, and I'm so sorry. My alarm didn't—""Oh don't bother, Nothing happened. The speeches haven't started, although boss' assistant came to look for you?" She squeezed my arm. "She's somewhere around." She patted my shoulder and walked away.I looked down at my dress, suddenly self-conscious. I'd put it on in such a panic that I
The gala was held at Grosvenor House Hotel, a sprawling building with chandeliers I could swear has diamonds. It was bigger than I expected. I, initially, had thought it would be smaller, considering the complaints and requests to reduce the sizes of some things. The first chosen venue would be a planet then.I arrived three hours early after an early chat with Priya who asked me to come in person for the final walkthrough, and after all the back and forth about loading docks and the equipment, I wasn't about to say no.The lobby was already transformed when I walked in. Tables draped in white cloth, flowers arranged in towering centerpieces, a stage set up near the far wall with microphones and speakers. Staff moved between the tables, adjusting silverware and folding napkins into unique shapes and styles. All this I watched standing near the entrance as I pulled up the floor plan on my phone, when someone tapped my shoulder."Eva?"I turned around to see a dark skin slender woman, a
I locked the door behind me and leaned against it, my face still burning, my heart still doing that stupid staccato thing it had been doing since I heard the beep of his key card. What have I just done? What the bloody heck just happened?I'm dead!!! I'm dead!!!!I accused him of following me into my room when he was just trying to open his own door, and I thought he was going to kiss me. Why the heck would I think that? Why the heck did I think that??Why the heck did I expect a kiss from a man I've tried countless times to drive away.I actually thought he was going to kiss me, and then I stood there like a frozen idiot while he just waited for me to realize my mistake. He probably enjoyed that. Masochistic!Love of torture!Evil man!I walked to the bed and dropped face-first onto the mattress, screaming into the pillow until my throat hurt, then I grabbed the pillow and hit myself in the forehead with it countless times before throwing it across the room. Maybe that'll bring m
Chloe threw the red dress on my bed and grabbed my arm. "We're going shopping.""As you can see, I'm packing."And moping, come on, this is the first time in forever since we last went shopping and you just got a free five hundred grand, you've got to spend a little on something, especially now tha
I submitted the final contracts for the London gala and landed them on Vanessa's desk at nine in the morning the next day.I printed them myself, double-checked every page, and walked them across the hall without knocking. Vanessa was on the phone when I entered, her back to me, her voice low and a
The cold medicine began to wear off somewhere between my office to the ground floor for a package and back, and by the time I reached my desk, my head was pounding again and my throat felt like I'd swallowed glass. I dropped the package on the floor, sat down, and stared at the stack of papers Vane
“Ugh.”I grabbed my left hand and winced at the numb ache from lying in it for so long.Lying?“Where am I?” I opened my eyes to wherever I was, it was dark, I could see the black curtains drawn tight, and I was lying on something soft that smelled like leather. My mouth was dry, my limbs felt heav
