JUNE'S POV

The brittle quiet of the next afternoon was shattered by Marlene’s raised voice. It was not a dramatic slam like last night, but something sharper, more wounded, coming from the living room. “You do not know anything about it! Just stop!”

I put down the knife I was using to chop vegetables and moved to the doorway. Franklin was standing in front of the television, still in his work clothes, his posture rigid. Marlene was on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, her face a mask of fresh betrayal.

“I know what I saw,” Franklin said, his voice dangerously calm. He was holding his phone loosely in one hand. “I know you have been moping around this house for two days over a boy who clearly is not worth your time. I am just trying to understand why, Marlene.”

“Because I liked him!” she cried, her voice cracking. “And he didn’t like me back! Isn’t that enough? Do you need a diagram?”

“There is more to it,” Franklin pressed, taking a step closer. He was not yelling. He was probing,

  • In Love With My Son's Best Friend   0096: COLD HEART

JUNE’S POVThe water in the sink had gone cold. I stood there with my hands in it, listening to the soft, final click of Adrian’s door upstairs. Marlene appeared in the doorway, arms wrapped tight around herself.“He’s really gone?”“It looks that way.” My voice sounded calm. Detached even. But inside I was shattering. I pulled the plug and watched the cloudy water swirl down. “Your father did what he wanted,” I said, drying my hands slow and careful. “He just used what happened as an excuse.”Her face folded in on itself. “It’s not fair, Mom. Luca was just trying to be nice at the end and Dad just sent him away.”At the end. Franklin had chosen the ending. A clumsy moment of comfort turned into proof.“Life isn’t fair,” I said. It was the only shield I had left. “Go to bed. Try to sleep.”When she was gone, the house emptied out. I shut off the lights, avoided the sunroom, climbed the stairs. Franklin’s door was closed. My hand stopped on our bedroom knob. The room felt wrong before

LUCA’S POVFrom the top of the stairs, I heard it all. Franklin’s voice was calm, and measured. Marlene’s was shaking, furious. He kept asking questions he already knew the answers to, letting her talk herself raw.“Has he ever said anything to you about your mother?” The words lodged right in my ribs. He wasn’t arguing. He was collecting evidence.I stayed frozen until the voices died, then backed away before anyone could see me. My skin felt too tight. Adrian’s apology from last night burned through me all over again, and now Marlene was crying for me, defending me, while her father was turning that pain into leverage against June.I couldn’t stay upstairs so I made my way down. I found him later in his study, the door open. He sat at his desk with a whiskey, staring out the window like the view had personally offended him.I knocked on the frame. “Mr. Wallace?”He turned. No anger, no warmth. Just cold hard assessment. “Luca. Come in.”The rug swallowed my footsteps. “I overheard s

  • In Love With My Son's Best Friend   0093: THE PARANOIA

JUNE’S POVThe silence after Franklin’s question roared in my ears. My own heartbeat was a frantic drum against my ribs, and I could almost hear the faint creak of the floorboard outside the door, the shift of weight that meant Luca was still there.Frozen, eyes wild and probably listening. Franklin’s eyes moved over my face like a scanner, looking for the lie he already knew was there. The final gong of the grandfather clock vibrated up through the bones of my feet.I forced a laugh. It came out thin and brittle, like ice cracking. “Expecting someone? Who would I be expecting at midnight, Franklin? The Tooth Fairy?” I crossed my arms tighter, my nails digging half-moons into my own biceps. The sharp, specific pain helped. “You’re the one skulking around. What’s really going on?”It was a pathetic counterattack, but it bought seconds. I prayed Luca had heard Franklin’s voice and had the sense to vanish.Franklin did not blink. He took another step into the room, and the intimate moonl

  • In Love With My Son's Best Friend   0092: TWO MINUTES TO TROUBLE

LUCA’S POVThe clock glowed 11:58, a pair of blue eyes in the dark. Just two minutes left before my secret rendezvous. My body was a live wire. I’d already pulled on the clean shirt and was halfway to the door when a soft knock froze me mid-step.For a second I wonder who it was. Marlene maybe? But then the sound was not a confident rap. It was something hesitant.I counted from one to ten in my head, just to look as if I was half asleep or in the bathroom before I opened it and my heart sank. Adrian stood there, hands shoved in his pockets, shoulders hunched like he was bracing for a blow.“Hey, man” he mumbled, staring at a point somewhere past my shoulder. “Can I come in so we could… talk for a sec?”No. Not now. Any other time, yes but definitely not right now. I was on my way to meet with your mom.“Uh, yeah. Sure, man. Come in.”He shuffled in and stood awkwardly in the center of the room, a monument to teenage misery. The silence was heavy with everything we hadn’t said that af

  • In Love With My Son's Best Friend   0091: WRONG GUY, RIGHT HUG

JUNE’S POVThe door slam wasn’t just a sound in this house. It was a punctuation mark. This one, sharp and final, came from down the hall, Marlene’s room. My body went still in the middle of folding a towel. The laundry room air felt suddenly thick and hot. Minor drama, Luca’s text had said. Sorted out, don’t worry. Bullshit. Nothing that ends with a slam like that is sorted. It’s ignited.I finished the fold with careful precision, set the towel on the stack, and listened. Heavy footsteps, most likely Adrian’s, stomped past the door toward the kitchen. The fridge opened, then slammed shut. Franklin was supposedly at the office, but the house felt crowded with all the things we weren’t saying. I needed to see her. I needed to know what minor drama looked like on my daughter’s face.I found her curled on her bed, face buried in her pillow. Not sobbing, but her shoulders were rigid with the effort of holding it in. “Marlene?” I kept my voice soft, sitting on the edge of the bed the way
