CELINE'S POV

Chen was directed inside at gunpoint, and Caelum never lowered the weapon from her head. I held my own gun on her chest, trigger finger ready to pull if she so much as blinked wrong. Amaya stood next to the window, looking for any sign that this was a setup, that backup would arrive.

Chen gradually lifted her hands, palms up. I am not the Gregor-mole. I’m the leaker, but I’m not the enemy. There's a difference.

"Explain," Caelum said coldly. "And make it convincing."

Chen drew a br

CAELUM'S POVI was up on my feet in seconds, completely awake and I had just been going to sleep deeply a few minutes ago. And the training of years meant I could wake ready for violence, right away."What did you hear?" I felt the shifting of our now few belongings and asked Celine quietly. Her voice shaking, she recounted Chen’s phone call word for word. Rage in my chest was bubbling up. After all of that, after me trusting her, she’d been playing us the entire time."Wake the others," I said. "Quietly. We move in five minutes."But as Celine went to step forward, Chen’s bedroom door creaked open. She’s stood in the doorway, silhouetted by the lamp she switched on. Her eyes were calm, almost sad.“I've not betrayed you, far from It, Caelum. I can see how you’d think that after what you overheard.”I pulled my gun on her and had it aimed at her chest in one smooth motion. "Explain. Fast. And it better be convincing."“I was speaking to the FBI Director. Preparing your real freedom,

CELINE'S POVSuddenly the enclosed hallways were filled with gunshots from every angle, and he went deaf. Bullets ripped through expensive paintings and marble columns, shattering bits of both. Caelum yanked me into cover behind a gargantuan, life-size table as soldiers streamed in from both sides of the hallway.“Stay low,” he screamed above the roar, opening fire with a gun he had concealed in his server’s jacket. Two guards went down, but still there were others. We made our way through the estate yard to yard, taking cover at every stop. All the hallways looked to be filled with more guards, every door we attempted to try was locked or took us into further peril. My arm was burning from the hollow tip bullet which had barely grazed me, ripping through my uniform and causing a bloody mess. Not deep, but it hurt enough to bring pictures of Charles Whitman into my eyes.Caelum limped heavily, his old injuries from the warehouse explosion getting worse under strain. He was ashen with

CAELUM'S POVIn the cabin, we ripped the place apart, searching in sweaty paranoia through every inch of the small space for surveillance equipment. Discovered three cameras concealed in smoke detectors, strategically placed to capture every angle of the main room. The type of device used to eavesdrop from inside the bottom of the lamp by the couch, where they talk in hushed tones. A tracker implanted in the cabin’s wifi router which Amaya had been using on her hacking work to transmit our precise location non-stop.“He's been scoping us out for days,” Amaya said, eyes pale as she surveyed the gear. "Maybe weeks. All we talked about, every move we made, everything. He knows all of it."“Then Montreal is a trap,” Chen said, tone flat. "He'll be waiting for us. This whole thing, the meeting, it's a trap to lure us out.”“We’re going back,” I told him, deciding at that moment. "But we're going dark first. Complete blackout. No phones, no electronics, nothing he can possibly trace or moni

"I've been feeding Gregor misinformation for months of course. Misdirections, dead ends, fake locations. Keeping you just one step ahead of him and making him believe I was his source inside the FBI. But he figured it out. He sees I’ve been playing him. And now he’s coming for me next. I need your support as much as you need mine.”I didn't buy it. Why would you put your career, your life on the line for us? We're nobody to you."Chen’s face changed, a rawness and

CAELUM'S POVA mole inside the FBI.The words felt like a punch in the gut. Everything suddenly made horrifying sense. How Gregor had cornered us at the factory, despite our precautions. How he had discovered our new identities. How he could stay a step ahead of the law as a fugitive on the run.Someone in the F.B.I. was providing him with information."We have to get out of here," Amaya had just said, as she already made her way toward the door. “If they come for the scotch, we've got a mole. They'll be coming.""Wait." I raised a hand, rereading Kent’s message. “Kent doesn’t know about this cabin. Nobody does except us. We're safe here for now.""For how long?" Celine asked.I didn't have an answer. Maybe hours, maybe days.I told them what Kent had said, seeing the horror start to spread on their faces.Amaya cursed in three languages. "Who's the mole? Chen? One of her agents?""Could be anyone. Support staff, tech people, field agents. The FBI is huge." I started pacing. "We can't

CELINE'S POVThey sent us to a place in rural Alaska, three days after the concept. There was no warning, no choice — just the arrival of federal agents at dawn with orders to pack one suitcase each. It was a long, quiet flight and when we landed at last I knew why they'd picked this place. It was the end of the world. It was nestled down in a valley surrounded by mountains and miles from the nearest town. The snow was everywhere, thick and white and unending. The cold was a physical slap when I stepped off the plane, robbing me of breath. The constant howling of the wind was another sound that did not cease. It was a black site, the F.B.I.’s most secure facility for protected witnesses. There were perhaps a dozen other people here, but we couldn’t talk to them. Gun-toting security guards marched back and forth, their breath visible in the cold air. No phones, no internet, no external contact. We may as well have been on another planet. They let us stay in a small cabin near the edge
