Chapter 5

Author: Bathed in Gold
After the funeral, the house returned to its usual quiet. I was someone who never mattered. With or without me, life went on the same.

The only difference was that now I existed here like a ghost.

As I watched Mom's busy figure, I felt like something about her had changed, but I didn't know what it was.

Until one night, long after everyone had fallen asleep, Mom opened the door to my room.

I was sitting on the windowsill, silently cursing the universe for giving me a filthy beginning and refusing to let me rest even in death.

Mom walked in like a shadow. She didn't turn on the light. She just moved slowly to the bed, smoothed the sheets with her hand, and sat down.

She sat there with her back to me, like a statue frozen in place.

I hid in the shadows and couldn't help sneaking a look at her.

Mom wasn't crying. Her eyes weren't even red.

I looked again. She still sat there, motionless, with only the faint rise and fall of her chest proving she was alive.

The admin was stunned."You'd better think this through. Even if we reverse time, it will only create a parallel universe. It won't have anything to do with the current you. And once reality changes, you'll disappear. The points you used can't be returned."I nodded with complete certainty. In the next second, my vision blurred, and I found myself standing in front of a cornfield."Get away from me! Help! I'm begging you, please… I'll give you money! Please just leave me alone!"I stumbled forward, pushing aside corn stalks that were taller than me, and ran toward the voice.Sure enough, I spotted a familiar face right in front of me.I swung the baseball bat I'd brought from Heaven and struck him again and again. I didn't know how many times I hit him before a sweaty, trembling hand closed around mine.My breath was ragged. My vision was still burning red, and my head was hot with rage.I looked down and met a pair of terrified eyes.It was Mom when she was young. Her clothe

A few days later, Mom came alone to my grave on a drizzly morning. It was nothing more than a small mound of dirt in the countryside, so simple that it looked almost careless. She stood there for a long, long time. Rain soaked her hair and clothes, but she didn't seem to feel anything. Finally, she slowly crouched down. With a trembling hand, she reached out and gently touched the cold tombstone."I'm sorry. I hated you from the moment you were in my belly."Her voice was soft. It was like she was confessing a secret she had hidden for years. "You kicked like a little tyrant. Every kick made my heart pound with panic. I kept thinking you were a demon sent to torment me."Her fingers followed the familiar letters of my name carved into the stone over and over again."When you grew up, you were still so mischievous. You never gave me a single day of peace. You were always getting into fights, causing trouble, coming home covered in bruises, and looking at me with that same defiant

Mom happened to be feeding Casper at the time. The door opened, and Samuel charged inside without warning and tackled Casper to the floor. His fists came down hard, his voice shaking with anger and sorrow."It's all your fault, you jinx! If it weren't for you, Connor wouldn't have died!"Casper was stunned and immediately burst into tears. The plate dropped from Mom's hand, shattering into pieces on the ground. She tried to pull Samuel away, but he pushed her hand aside. He looked at Mom through tears and snot and spoke as if he was wringing out every word with everything inside him."Mrs. Willis, we played by the reservoir every day growing up. That day, when he walked into the water, he looked at me. He looked right at me, Mrs. Willis. His eyes were just…"His throat tightened. After gasping for breath, he finally screamed,"He wanted to die there! He asked me how someone could die without leaving a trace. I thought he hated you, but really, he hated himself. He didn't want t

Water splashed everywhere. His thin arms flailed a couple of times before he sank, leaving only a trail of bubbles rising to the surface. My brain didn't even have time to process it. My body moved first.I sprinted over and jumped in.The icy water engulfed me in an instant, the cold drilling into my skin like needles.I saw Casper struggling beneath the surface, his wide eyes filled with terror. I swam toward him with everything I had and shoved him hard toward the shore. He clung to the muddy bank like it was the only thing keeping him alive, coughing and crying. But because of the force I'd used, I slipped backward into the water. The surface closed above my head, and the world went silent and slow. Light flickered overhead like shattered glass. The suffocation was unbearable. My lungs were burning violently, but what cut through the pain was the voice I heard from the shore. It was Mom's scream.I forced myself up once, breaking through the water.I saw her sprint to

Just as my lungs were burning, someone yanked Mom off me with tremendous force.Granny's voice was hoarse and shaking. "Have you lost your mind? Are you really going to throw your life away again because of him? It's not worth it! Once was enough…"Mom collapsed into her arms and let out a broken sob. "Mom, I can't take it anymore. What if he turns out just as bad as his father?"Granny held her tightly, but her eyes shifted toward me. For a moment, I thought she saw that my eyes were half-open, but she only whispered calmly, "Let's go back to bed."Mom's crying faded into the distance. I lay there, gasping for air, then pulled the blanket over my face and rolled onto my side.I had no idea how long it was before dawn started to break. That was when Granny walked in, carrying a large enamel cup.It was filled with steaming mushroom soup.Drinking mushroom soup first thing in the morning was strange, but she simply set the cup on my nightstand and said, her voice as steady as t
