Chapter 1

Author: Serene Pillow
After I wished the princess, Eleanor Beaumont, and my brother, Valerian Ashford, a lifetime of love and happiness, everyone in the hall turned to look at me in astonishment.

Everyone in Alderwyn knew that Eleanor had once climbed 3,000 stone steps through the snow to the gates of the Grand Cathedral of Alderwyn in search of the serenity stone for me, knocking relentlessly until they opened up.

She had also searched far and wide for famous physicians when I injured myself on the training grounds, and, disregarding all propriety, had stayed by my side for seven days and nights.

She had said that I was the only one she would ever marry, so everyone had assumed that the person standing beside her that day would be me.

I noticed Eleanor's eyes on me as well. But after a brief flicker of surprise, only coldness and wariness remained in her eyes.

In that instant, I understood—she had been reborn too.

In my past life, after Valerian died, she had looked at me the same way, as if she wished she could tear me into pieces. And all the more because his dying words had been, "Your Highness, if there is a next life, will you marry me?"

From that moment on, Eleanor and I spent an entire lifetime resenting and hating each other.

Every year, on the anniversary of Valerian's death, she forced me to get on my knees before his portrait and repent.

"You owe Val his life! You owe it to him for the rest of your days!"

She had even taught the children she had nearly died giving birth to—the very children I had raised with my own hands—not to acknowledge me.

They smashed the gifts I bought them and cried, "You killed Father! You don't deserve to be our dad!"

But later, when enemies breached the city, Eleanor, despite being shot by seven arrows, shielded me desperately, all just to beg me to give her and Valerian my blessing in the next life.

So now, I smiled with perfect calm. "Congratulations, Your Highness, on your betrothal to Valerian."

Eleanor's brows drew tightly together.

Then, Valerian stepped forward and patted me on the shoulder. "Luke, I know this is hard for you, but Her Highness' heart belongs to me. Don't blame her for choosing me."

The black opal bracelet on his wrist caught the light. It was the coming-of-age gift Grandfather had left me. Mother had forcibly taken it away yesterday, saying she would let Valerian have it because he needed to keep up appearances that day.

I drew my hand back. "You're right, Valerian. How could I possibly hold that against her?"

…

After the banquet dispersed, Eleanor stopped me in the palace corridor. She looked down at me and said, her voice cold and thin, "Lucien, Val is weak. He cannot bear the slightest grievance. If you harm him out of jealousy, I will show you no mercy, not even for old times' sake."

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of my lips as a bleak chill filled me.

In my past life, I had pacified the vassal kings' rebellions for the sake of marrying her, and I had also taken a poisoned arrow from an assassin for her. But in the end, all I got out of it was her telling me that she wouldn't spare me for old times' sake.

I lowered my eyes. "Your Highness, since you chose Valerian, I will most certainly give you my blessing."

Eleanor's expression stiffened. After a long moment, she said in a heavy voice, "Behave yourself, and I will petition to find you a decent match."

I turned and left without sparing her another glance.

…

The moment I got home and entered the courtyard, I saw Mother having several servants remove an amethyst ceremonial crown from my room.

I had saved three years of monthly stipends and entrusted someone to bring me the finest dawnstar pearls from Elaris to complement the amethyst, and had personally set each one to form the entwined roses on the crown's peak.

When Eleanor saw it back then, her eyes had lit up with delight, and she'd exclaimed, "Luke, when you wear this on our wedding day, it will symbolize us and the love we share! We will surely have a lifetime of happiness, never to be apart!"

My breath caught, and I instinctively moved to stop the servants from taking the crown.

But Mother shot me a glare, her gaze full of displeasure. "What do you think you're doing? You're no longer the candidate for the prince consort! This ceremonial crown will be perfect for Val. If you dare stir up any trouble before the wedding, I won't spare you!"

I clenched my teeth and slowly retreated to the side, saying nothing more.

After they left, I pulled out a wooden box from a hidden compartment under my bed. Inside lay a betrothal agreement written on a piece of yellowed parchment.

Three years ago, a woman had followed her father to war. But before she left, she had asked me if I would be willing to marry her when she returned.

At the time, Eleanor occupied my heart completely, so I'd never answered her question properly.

Now, I picked up my quill and wrote a reply.

"I will marry you. Are you still willing to marry me?"

Eleanor didn't leave the northern borderlands immediately. Every day, she had her people deliver things to me—swords, silks, and precious herbs. And that Heartbond pendant left by the late king.In my past life, I had begged dearly for it, only to see her lay it on Valerian's grave. In this life, it was delivered straight to me, but I didn't even open the box. I simply ordered it to be returned unopened. On the third day, Eleanor came herself. She stood outside the command tent, her voice lowered. "Luke, I know you resent me."I was wiping my bow when she said that, and I didn't even lift my head when I heard it. "Your Highness, you're overstating the matter."Her lashes trembled. "I was blinded before. I only remembered that you killed Val, and I forgot... I forgot how much you had once given for me."I paused. So she actually thought that I hated her simply because she had forgotten my kindness.I looked up at her. "Eleanor, even now, you still don't understand. I don't need yo

I looked down at the betrothal agreement in Annette's hand. It was still the same one from three years ago. The pages were yellowed, the corners worn, but it had been kept very well.I reached out and took it, then solemnly wrote my name on it—Lucien Ashford. The day Annette and I married, snow fell over the northern borderlands all night. There was no lavish fanfare, nor did we have our family with us. We only said our wedding vows, exchanged rings, and received well-wishes from the soldiers stationed at the border.Annette slipped Grandmother's old silver ring on my finger. It was the only thing I had brought with me from Alderwyn, because everything else had been carried off to Valerian's courtyard. But at that moment, I suddenly didn't care anymore. They could take away all my valuables, but no one could ever take away the riding and archery skills Grandfather taught me, nor the love Grandmother had given me.After our simple wedding ceremony was over, Annette held my hand fir

I could hear the nails being pried out of the coffin, one after another. Then, in the next instant, someone lifted me out and wrapped me tightly in a warm blanket. After a bitter pill was forced into my mouth, the heaviness in my chest suddenly lifted, and I violently choked out a mouthful of dark blood. Sensation finally returned to my rigid limbs. When I opened my eyes, a woman was half-kneeling before me. Her features were sharper than I remembered, but she still had that same striking look from years ago. It was Annette Blackwood.Annette lowered her gaze to look at me, her voice low and hoarse. "Luke, I'm sorry I was so late."I looked at her, and tears rolled down before I could stop them. "No, you weren't late."Then, I grabbed her sleeve, my fingertips still trembling. "Annette, let's leave together."She bent down and held my hand firmly. "Alright. This time, no one will take you away."The carriage left Alderwyn overnight. Even though the city gates had long been locke

After taking the pill, I could still hear the voices around me. It was just that my limbs had gone rigid, my eyelids felt heavy, and I couldn't move even a finger. The first thing I heard was the cries of shock from the hall, then the sharp sound of a porcelain bowl shattering. For the first time, Eleanor lost her composure. "Summon the royal physician! All of you! Get him here right now!"Someone tried to persuade her in a trembling voice, "Your Highness, Mr. Lucien is already—""Shut up!" She seemed to have gone mad, holding me tightly and refusing to let go.I could feel her hands shaking. In my past life, when the palace had been set on fire, she had held me and trembled just like this too, right before I fell unconscious. Back then, my heart had ached for her. But now, all I felt was exhaustion. Mother's crying soon started, but she wasn't crying for me. "Today is Val's wedding! Why did Luke have to die at a time like this? He's deliberately trying to ruin Val!"Father bo

Early the next morning, I was woken by laughter outside my room."Did you hear? The king gave Princess Eleanor a bottle of his prized liquor that he kept in his wine cellar for 50 years as a wedding gift! Her Highness also had Alderwyn's finest craftsmen make a ceremonial crown for Mr. Valerian!"And that's not all! The most precious of all is the Heartbond pendant prepared by the late king himself! It is said to be passed down only to the prince consort!"Another voice sneered, "What does that one locked up in there have against Mr. Valerian? He's just a wild boy who grew up at the border, and he's dreaming about marrying someone so way out of his league?"My fingertips gradually tightened around the bedding.I recognized that voice. It was James Carter, a servant who, three years ago, had been beaten half to death by the steward. I had taken him under my wing and given him money to treat his wounds, after which he had dropped to his knees at my feet, crying, saying he would on
