The day started earlier than normal for Dominik. The sky was still dark when the 6'4" German went out for a short run around his hotel. Linkin Park was blaring in his ear buds while sweat poured down his brow. Music and adrenaline were Dominik's favorite combination.
He could not get that beautiful smile out of his mind for a second. Suddenly, something else joined that thought in his mind. The crazy idea of inviting Samanta to one of the games. Most definitely Carlos, Samanta's friend would love that, but his publicist, Friedrich, might dismiss his idea completely, especially since he had only seen this girl a couple times. It was not sensible.
Approximately at 10am, Dominik was ready to board the bus with his team. The inaugural game had been scheduled at 2pm, but before, there would be a huge opening show, due in just a couple minutes, so everybody had to be at the stadium a few hours before the game, a matter of protocols.
“Ready?” Ewald, the team coach, asked with a look of complicity.
“It will be the easiest three points in my career” Dominik answered with a cocky smile.
Not to underestimate the US team, but, quite frankly they were nowhere near the same level as Germany, their team already had won three World Cups. It had nothing to do with the players individually, either, but most of them looked up to Dominik, that gave him an advantage.
They were welcomed by a few hundreds of reporters and TV cameras, photographers shooting their flashes at them from every direction. A group of FIFA representatives came up to the bus to make sure the footballers arrived to the Stub Hub Center without any setbacks.
The joy in this place got into Dominik instantly. The fans were screaming frantically from the bleachers, they were singing everything from the classic “Oe, Oe”, to very personalized cheers for some of the players in the Germany team. He found it funny that even though they were in a foreign country, the public would be so warm to a visiting team, but then he remembered how passionate their German fans were, and they followed them around the world. He smiled enjoying how lucky he was. Although he could not see them, he could hear them cheering clearly.
“This way, please” a woman's voice announced from between the group of people who welcomed them, showing them the way to their locker room, where they would be getting ready for the first game of the World Cup.
A couple hours went by since Samanta began her shift at work and she could not stop looking at the huge LCD screen in the sporting goods store. People gathered around to watch the World Cup opening ceremony, although Samanta wasn't particularly keen on the World Cup, nor soccer, nor the $200 Carlos bet on Germany. She only cared about one thing, actually, one single person.Sam was serving coffee and cleaning tables out of inertia, she was good at her job, but mechanically. Her mind was not there, but at the Stub Hub.“Your man better win” Carlos told Samanta, as a joke.“Not my man” she cleared that out and cleared her throat, “besides, I would appreciate it if you were not spreading it” she turned her head slightly and noticed the two girls dispatching a couple customers at the bar. “I wouldn't like those two finding out.”Carlos followed Sam's stare and saw Megan and Stacy, who seemed immerse in their own worlds. He laughed remembering how Samanta loathed them, a feeling that grew
Stub Hub Center, Los Angeles, California.Match of the World Cup.“Pass the darn ball!” Coach yelled for the third time, but Dominik carried on with the play he had in mind. “Darn it, Weigand” Ewald barked. The team captain disobeyed his coach's commands and followed his gut. He warned Ewald, but he would not listen.Herman Delch, centerfield, kept doing signs to pass him the ball like they had done in practice, but Dominik decided to pass it to Edmund Brauer, center forward, who, after getting the ball, did not know what to do since Dominik was supposed to serve Delch, in the event that Carlton and Gates, both US players, cut him off.Ewald brought his hands to his face and cursed under his breath, once again, seeing how Brauer returned the ball to Weigand. The score was 2-2 on the second additional minute, out of three on the first half. Germany had a clear shot to score, with all their three forwards in the hot spot.“Dominik” Delch called once again.Dom looked at him and noticed
4 days before.Dominik managed to sneak away from his team mates, he had had enough flattery for a day. They won by a difference of 2 goals, adding up to the first 3 points on the tournamentAlthough they were used to winning, every victory was worth a celebration, the only difference being he kept the champagne for the finals. He headed for his locker and put his hand in his bag, looking for his phone. He felt an impulse to write to Samanta, to let her know they had won the game. He did not know why, but he felt like he needed to let her know.He took his phone and slid his finger to unlock it.He frowned when he noticed.Samanta's number was gone.“What the..?” he muttered. This was very strange. He was looking at that number not an hour ago on his phone screen and now it was gone. It did not disappear by magic…“Hurry up, Dominik. It's time for the press conference” one of his team mates reminded him.Dom shut his eyes tight, and let out a sigh in frustration. Al he wanted was to g
“Samanta?” The man's voice resonated in Sam's mind and she turned to stone in that very spot. “Hello. Samanta, can you hear me?” Insisted Dominik.“Yes” she shook her head hard, “I'm here” she whispered.“I could not call you before because...” Dominik hurried to let her know everything that had occurred since her number was mysteriously vanished from his mobile.Samanta, however, did not hear a single word he said. Her mind was focused on something entirely different: He called.«Oh my God! It's him», The little voice in her head kept repeating ad her hear started racing.»I was wondering if you would like…” Dom hesitated. He was about to say something he was not sure of. He didn't know it was the most thoughtful thing to say, but he still took his chance, “to go out with me somewhere?” “What?” Sam asked to make sure what she heard was true.“Yes. Talk, take a stroll…“I would like that very much” she responded not thinking about it even once—. I'll be off at 4:00 pm” she muttered.
«What am I doing?», Dominik asked himself for the fifth time in a row. He knew this was completely insane, but he was, none the less, delighted to be doing it. He went way past the limit of what he thought he could do for a woman. Point being, he had never done anything like this. After Rodríguez managed to recover Samanta's number, Dom started sketching a plan. That afternoon he finally had some time to himself, rest and take his mind off his sports and advertising engagements, therefore he snuck Friedrich's ID while they were in his room, overlooking some documents Adidas sent him, in order to renew the contract they had going on. He used said ID to rent a vehicle after sneaking out of the hotel, he knew if he used his own, it would be a matter of minutes before the press would find and chase him.Outside the airport, there was an impatient and very nervous Dominik, who, by whatever strange reason, did not understand how come this girl made him feel so good, so free … so him. It was
Dominik smiled from the obvious embarrassment the woman sitting next to him was feeling.“Don’t worry. You don't need to be sorry. Life was merciful to him, the people who suffer from the disease that killed him, usually agonize for decades …” he cleared his throat. My father never liked going to the doctor, so I think that's what kept him around for so long. “He had the disease, but he never had the symptoms. It only took him knowing he had it for it to consume him…”Samanta could sense the profound sadness Dominik's words contained. Although she had not experienced the loss of a parent, she was very empathetic and it always heartened her to see others in pain. She noticed her eyes were watering. The car stopped.“Your father must have been a great man” she said in a shaky voice, and then cleared her throat.“He was not only my father, he was my friend, my accomplice … my angel. He supported me from the start, with this whole football thing. Soccer, I mean. My mother, because of the
Dominik shut his eyes close and forced himself to calm down, he was about to blow.“I cannot believe this. Friedrich” he said the name begrudgingly.“Who's Friedrich?”“My manager and publicist” he responded, looking at one of the men watching him. “He goes out of his way to keep watching over every step I take.”“Why would he want your picture, I mean, ours?” Sam seemed confused.“Pictures? What?”“Yes, that one over there just shot his flash” Sam looked at the man by the hot dog stand.“Jeez!” Dominik seemed very upset.“What's the matter?”“Let's go.”“Sure, we'll go, but. What's going on?”“They are not Friedrich's men, they're paparazzi. someone recognized me and let them know” he said, grabbing Sam by the arm as they walked towards the car. “Forgive me, Samanta. Coming here might not have been the best idea.”“Are you kidding me? I loved it!”“Seriously, forgive me, I never wanted this for you…”“But… What are you talking about?” Sam was starting to get agitated by Dominik's att
«Slip it under the door and leave», he repeated to himself mentally, for the third time. He took a deep breath and took two steps forward. «Leave, Carlos », his conscience snapped. He knew he was acting a fool. He used the silliest excuse to go over to Samanta's. Bring her her paycheck? Samanta picked it up every Saturday morning! It was absolutely unnecessary for him to be there. His only goal was to make sure Sam had already come home. If that was the case, it would only mean their date had been boring and that was that. However, on the contrary, Sam did not make it back home because she had had so much fun she lost track of time.He looked at the clock and realized it was almost 8pm, he took another breath in, put his hand in a fist, raised his fist, about to knock on that door, announcing his presence.«Why do you torture yourself like this? Go home!». Once again, that little voice in his head.He shut his eyes tight and let out a long sigh in resignation. He got down and slipped
