Lucian sat on the edge of the cot, blood dripping steadily from the gash in his arm. His sword lay across his lap, the steel slick with red, but his hand refused to let it go.

“Put it down,” Saraphina said. Her voice was softer than she intended, almost pleading.

He gave a faint, humorless smile. “And let them think I’m defenseless?”

She knelt beside him, the heat of the fight still burning in her veins, and pried the weapon from his fingers. His grip resisted for a moment before giving way. The sword clattered against the floorboards, and in the silence after, she could hear every ragged breath he took.

“You’re bleeding too much,” she whispered.

Lucian met her eyes, steady even through the pallor. “I’ve bled worse.”

“That doesn’t make it less.” Her hands hovered over the wound, the faint glow of her fire flickering beneath her skin. She wanted to pour it into him, to seal the flesh, but fear gnawed at her control. The last time she had tried healing with fire, the heat had nearly con

The sound rose before the shapes appeared: a pounding like a hundred drums, boots slamming cobbles in hard, even time. The ward that had whispered Saraphina’s name all night now howled it. The chant rolled from mouth to mouth until it was less a sound than a living thing. They were not soldiers the people faced. They were neighbors, grocers, smiths, washerwomen, boys who had once helped Mirielle copy ledgers by lamplight. They came with broken tools for weapons, with kitchen knives, with iron tongs red from furnace work. Some carried nothing but raw courage and the memory of how the council had lit their homes.Saraphina stood in the center, hands empty for once, because she wanted this to look like a rising of the people, not a magic show. Flames still curled at her fingertips, faint and ready, but she kept them coiled, a promise kept in her palms.“Do not give them the reason to call you monsters,” Lucian said at her side. His voice was ragged but steady. The bandage on his shoulder

The safehouse smelled of smoke and iron. Saraphina sat at the edge of the table, her palms pressed flat against the scorched ledger as though willing the words to spread faster. The lamplight made her eyes shine, though the skin beneath them was bruised with exhaustion.Mirielle’s quill scratched furiously across parchment, copying name after name, shipment after shipment. Sheets of fresh ink piled beside her, waiting to be carried into the night.Kaelen leaned against the wall, blades across his knees, sharpening one with long, deliberate strokes. Each rasp of steel against whetstone cut through the silence.Lucian was seated near the hearth, bandaged shoulder tight against his chest. Despite the pain, his gaze was fixed on the door, hand never straying far from his sword.A knock shattered the silence.Everyone tensed. Kaelen’s blade stilled, Mirielle froze mid-stroke, Saraphina lifted her head sharply. The knock came again, softer this time, almost pleading.Kaelen rose first, stal

The chants still thundered through the ward, echoing against stone walls and shuttered windows. Saraphina stood at the heart of it, firelight casting her in gold and scarlet, her chest rising with each breath. The assassin’s body lay sprawled at her feet, his blade slick with both his own blood and Lucian’s.Kaelen crouched over the corpse, wiping his swords clean with the assassin’s cloak. His mouth was a thin line, but his eyes were burning. “A captain of the guard,” he muttered. “He didn’t send a cutpurse. He sent his own. That means Malrec isn’t even pretending anymore.”Mirielle slipped through the edge of the crowd, her hands full of fresh ledgers and leaflets that had somehow multiplied even in the chaos. She thrust them into eager hands, her voice sharp as a knife. “See for yourselves! Even his captains spill your blood in the streets! Who is the real traitor here?”The people roared, fists raised high. The energy had shifted from fear to fury.Saraphina’s gaze was drawn back

The flames had died, but the streets of the northern ward still crackled with energy. Ash drifted down like black snow, and where once the people had wept, now they raised their voices in a chorus that shook the square.Saraphina stood at the center of it, her palms stinging with heat, her chest heaving. She could barely feel her legs beneath her, yet the fire within her had never burned brighter.Lucian stayed close at her side, his hand firm against her back. “Listen,” he murmured. The crowd was chanting her name. Not in fear, not in accusation — but in defiance. Mothers lifted their children to see her, men waved buckets in the air as if they were banners, and the voices merged into one rhythm that carried on the night air.Saraphina swallowed hard, emotion tightening her throat. “They believe…”“They’ve chosen,” Lucian said. His gaze swept the crowd, sharp but proud. “And now, they will fight with us.”Kaelen pushed through a knot of men and women, his scowl not enough to hide the

The east ward was not silent that night. Every alley carried whispers, every home lit with hurried lamplight. The raid had failed, and the story was already slipping beyond Malrec’s reach.Saraphina sat at the edge of the safehouse table, her hands still trembling faintly though she hid it behind clenched fists. The smell of smoke and blood clung to her. She could still feel the Weller boy’s small hand in hers, the desperate grip of someone who believed she could not fail.Lucian leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, eyes watching her with a weight that steadied even when it pressed heavy. “You did what needed to be done,” he said quietly.Saraphina exhaled slowly. “I did what my heart demanded. But what if it wasn’t enough? Malrec will not stop with raids.”Kaelen dropped heavily into the chair opposite her, blades still at his back, eyes flashing with restless anger. “You’re right. He won’t stop. The man’s pride is bleeding. Every strike we land only makes him bleed harder. He

The night air was sharp, heavy with smoke that still lingered from Malrec’s decrees. Torches burned in the streets, not as signs of celebration but as warnings. Every alley whispered of fear, and every door seemed to hold its breath.Saraphina had barely closed her eyes when the pounding began.“Phina.” Lucian’s hand touched her shoulder, firm but steady. His whisper cut through the dark. “Listen.”At first she thought it was thunder, but then she heard the boots. Dozens of them, pounding the cobbles in unison. The shouts followed, rough and cruel, a chorus of steel against the silence of sleeping streets.Kaelen stormed into the room, blades already strapped to his back. “They’re raiding the east ward. Council soldiers, and plenty of them. This isn’t patrol work. They’re dragging people from their homes.”Saraphina swung to her feet, heart hammering. “Who?”“Families. Sympathizers. Anyone who was seen cheering your name.” His voice was clipped, his face pale with rage. “They’re not j
