Chapter 2

Author: Ironwood Pillar
I had heard that incubi not only pleased their owners; some could even do housework. I had wanted one for the longest time, but I could not afford it.

A month ago, I found Raven abandoned by a dumpster. Back then, his face was deathly pale, and he was barely clinging to life. I brought him home and gave him food and water.

Raven remained very quiet, as if he did not want much contact with me.

I asked, "Do you remember where your home is? Once you've rested, I'll take you to find your owner."

"Don't have one."

"What?"

"I don't have an owner." He sounded displeased.

However, he had a name. Incubi's names were always given by their owners, so I guessed he was abandoned by his previous owner.

I kept Raven by my side, but because of his resistance, we never signed a contract.

Now, I finally understood. Despite his stubbornness, Raven was surprisingly devoted. He had never forgotten his former owner, had he?

A few days later, my suspicion was confirmed.

One weekend, I took Raven to watch the tidal bore. Before leaving, I specifically told him, "Considering you eat my food and drink, if a big wave comes, you need to protect me."

Raven made a noncommittal sound, clearly uninterested. However, after we arrived at the viewing point, he suddenly became serious.

Following Raven's line of sight, I discovered he was watching a young woman. He was staring so intently that he did not even hear me call his name.

I guessed that woman might be his former owner.

Suddenly, a large wave crashed toward us.

Raven abandoned me and rushed in front of the woman. With his nearly six-foot-three frame, he shielded her from the wave. Then, before she could see his face clearly, he silently walked away.

I had not dodged in time and was soaked through.

I asked Raven, "Do you know that woman?"

For once, Raven did not deny it.

I ended up catching a cold after that and had to lie curled up in bed, feeling miserable.

Raven seemed unaccustomed to seeing me like this and muttered, "Getting sick from a little water. Humans really are fragile."

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.

"Hello. We've received a report about an unregistered creature in the area. We need you to cooperate with our investigation."

I bolted upright. "Unregistered creature?"

"Yes. According to regulations, any unregistered creature must be taken away for disposal."

That meant Raven was in danger. After being abandoned by his owner, his records would have been wiped. He probably fell under the 'unregistered' category too, right?

I quickly shoved Raven into the closet.

The enforcement officers came in and looked around but found nothing. Their gaze landed on the closet.

"Can we open it for inspection?"

I blocked the closet door. "I'm sorry, but that contains my private belongings."

"This is urgent. Please cooperate."

"No. It's all underwear and things I only wear for my boyfriend."

The two officers exchanged glances.

"What if we insist on opening it?"

"Please respect my privacy. You're already being unreasonable, barging into my home in the middle of the night for an inspection. If you want to open this closet and embarrass me further, you'll have to knock me out first."

They did not dare resort to force. After discussing it briefly, they said, "Fine. You're just a young woman. You probably wouldn't be hiding any dangerous creatures anyway."

"Dangerous creatures?"

The enforcement officer hesitated, a trace of fear crossing his face. "I mean... demons."

I remembered the news I saw a few days ago, saying demons had recently been spotted. Citizens were urged to be vigilant.

After they left, Raven emerged from the closet. He looked at me with a complicated expression. "Why didn't you turn me in?"

"If I did, you probably wouldn't survive."

"Didn't you hear them? They're looking for demons."

I laughed. "They're looking for demons. What does that have to do with a little incubus like you?"

"Little... incubus?"

I asked, "Raven, what task did you actually come to the human world to accomplish?""My dad said if I achieved something significant, he'd pass the throne to me.""What kind of achievement?""No idea. That's all he said."During our casual chat, Raven's phone rang. He had bought it himself without using my money. I had no idea demons were so wealthy."Oh no, it's my dad!"Raven's expression turned tense. It was as if he were facing a formidable enemy.A deep voice came through the phone. "Son, how are things going in the human world?""Pretty good.""Have you achieved anything significant?""Uh...""Did you destroy a city? Or maybe destroy the planet?""Dad, I saved a few human children. Does that count?"The other end went quiet for a moment. "That works."Just as Raven breathed a sigh of relief, the man asked, "What else? You're not gonna tell me that's it, right?"Raven glanced at me and said quietly, "I… also got married."This time, the silence lasted even longer,

"What reporter?" Steele's attitude remained cold."Don't play dumb! We deliberately leaked that intel to lure the reporter here so we could get rid of her for good! She's been relentless all these years, worse than the police! I won't rest easy until she's dealt with!""I don't know what you're talking about.""Still acting, huh?"The man in the lead waved his hand, and his lackeys rushed forward, punching and kicking Steele. At first, Steele could still fight back. However, incubi were not built for combat. Even as the Lord of Incubi, he could not change his species' inherent limitations. Moreover, he was currently in a weakened state. Before long, he was beaten down and could no longer stand."Tell us where she went and we'll let you off easy."Steele was covered in blood, but he remained silent, enduring their increasingly violent blows. The man looked around with shifty eyes. "I heard a woman's voice just now. She can't have gone far. Search everywhere! Don't miss a single

The water droplets seemed to fall on Steele, soaking through his back and bending his spine."You... You know everything?" His voice turned hoarse."Yeah, I know everything. And I'm guessing the biggest difference between you and other incubi now is that you can survive without me feeding you, right?"Steele did not deny it."Is that the achievement you gained from draining my life?"The light in his eyes slowly extinguished, and he knelt before me."Master, you've guessed everything correctly…"Incubi are a lowly species that can only survive by depending on others. I once betrayed you to gain the right to live freely, but I regretted it. After you died, I suffered every single day. I could only keep tormenting myself."Steele waved his hand, removing the disguise from his body. His snow-white skin was covered in scars.Incubi's wounds healed quickly, but the ones covering his body must have been old wounds that never fully recovered before new ones were added. It was an endl

The alcohol made my steps unsteady. When we passed a dumpster, I threw up with a loud retch. It smelled terrible.Raven did not seem to mind at all. He handed me water and pulled out tissues.I said, "Don't worry about me. I'm disgusting right now.""You're not."He crouched down, gesturing for me to climb onto his back. "You picked me up by a dumpster back then but never thought I was disgusting."It was hard to catch a cab around here. Raven carried me on his back toward a busier street. As he walked, he said, "I originally planned to leave once I had recovered. But... you bought me new clothes and gave me food and drink. Even when I had prejudices against humans at first and had a bad attitude, you never abandoned me…"After spending over a month together, I came to realize that I was liking you more and more."His sudden confession caught me completely off guard. Raven remained as straightforward and genuine as always."Now, it's my turn to take care of you."Hearing his

The staff member yelled, "Chloe, it's too dangerous! Get away from him!" I said, "But I promised you I'd keep him stable.""No, no, no. We were too naive! Now that we've seen him in person, we realize it's an impossible plan! Your safety is what matters most. Get behind us, quickly!"I did not move. I simply looked up at Raven and asked, "Do you want to keep living with me?""Yes.""Then you have to follow the law and not harm humans.""Okay.""Swear on your dignity as the demon prince.""I don't understand what that means, but whatever you say goes. I'll listen to you."I turned to the staff members and gave them an 'OK' sign. "All set."The staff members looked baffled.I led Raven home. Although the crisis was resolved, he remained unhappy the whole way.I said, "You seem to have something on your mind.""I don't.""If you don't tell the truth, I'm going to go find Steele.""Fine, fine. I'll talk, okay?"Raven hung his head, his dejection written plainly on his face

"We're not sure. High-level demons like him usually come here with a purpose."I recalled that the shop owner had also said Raven was no ordinary demon.I said, "If there's anything I can do, please tell me. After all, it's partially my fault things have dragged on this long.""There is one thing that only you can do," the staff member replied. "What is it?""From your description, he seems quite attached to you right now. We'd like you to keep him stable for the time being and avoid provoking him so that he doesn't do anything harmful."The best outcome would be if he enjoys his time here and returns home without incident. After all, His Highness is said to be extraordinarily powerful. We really don't want to confront him directly.""Wait, His Highness?""You don't know?" The staff member looked somewhat surprised. "The demon realm still operates under a monarchy. As for the one living in your house, his father is the current king of the demon realm, which makes him...""The
