RafaelI wake in the middle of the night. Madeleine is curled tightly against me. For once, she's in a deep sleep. She always tosses and turns in her sleep, waking me up at random times during the night. But not tonight. No nightmares are plaguing her. With a soft moan she turns away from me and onto her stomach, tucking one arm under her hip and the other under her head. I use the opportunity to get up and go to the bathroom.I’m awake now, and I won’t be able to go back to sleep. My mind is already churning, considering my next move.I know where Sforza is. His last instructions to Rossi were on the flash drive I found in his office. Stupid to leave evidence like that behind. Sell the diamonds.Sell the last of the cargo.Sell the house.Wire the money to his offshore account in Spain. He wants all of it. He really doesn’t plan to come back, and he’s not giving his captains a taste, even though they are taking on the risk of selling his diamonds and his human cargo. No wonder Rossi
RafaelI have a lot more faith that Madeleine will be able to keep her temper in check when she speaks to Harris. After the scene in the bedroom it’s almost as if some kind of peace has settled over her. She’s quiet, introspective, but calm. I don’t think she’ll ever cease to amaze me. Every minute of every day, she surprises me a little more. I can see my life with her. I can see my entire future. The two things that used to be the most important to me, the family and the business, doesn’t seem quite so significant anymore. I open the glass door for Madeleine and stand back so she can step inside. The police station is cold, the air dry, floors as filthy as ever. We walk past the row of prostitutes waiting to be processed to the front desk. “Is Detective Harris in?” I ask.“Yes, Sir. He said to send you straight to room two.”An interogation room. Not his office. He wants to intimidate us. At least, he hopes he'll be able to frighten Madeleine. He knows I've been in too many inte
MadeleineRafael lifts me up and gently lays me on the bed. He reaches down to take off the condom, ties it, and throws it in the bin. So that was what he was doing while I crouched on the bed, ass in the air? Getting a condom. He lies down, and protectively wraps his arms and legs around me, engulfing me in the heat and weight of his body. For some insane reason, I almost start laughing, but I can’t. I don’t dare.Something inside me, new and unfamiliar, yet spectacular and alive, is growing in the places where darkness used to live. But it still feels fragile and I’m afraid if I laugh now it will break. “Are you okay?” Rafael asks. “Is there anything you need to talk about?” His voice is so soft. As if he’s whispering a prayer.“Have you… done that before?”“Yes.”“And you like it?”“I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t.”“I- what… why do you like it?”He shrugs and nuzzles his nose in my neck, inhaling deeply as if the smell of my skin makes him high. “I don’t know. I didn’t start out th
MadeleineI watch him walk into the bathroom as if he didn’t just threaten to spank me, and I can’t figure out if he was serious or just playing with me. He made the threat before. When I just moved into the house, but he never followed through. Maybe it’s just something he does - make vague threats. “I thought you were going to spank me,” I say before I can stop myself.I’m still angry at him. Giving me orders and expecting me to blindly follow them without questions. Like I’m one of his guys.Rafael turns and watches me, his hazel eyes growing darker, fingers curling around the doorframe. “I never discipline when I’m angry.”Then he disappears into the bathroom without a word.I don’t even try to sleep. My heart pounds too loudly in my ears, and my thoughts dart around like fireflies in the dark. I shift on the bed, pulling my knees tighter to my chest, listening to the splashing water, waiting for it to stop. Every nerve in my body is on high alert. He didn’t admit to it, not alo
RafaelWe step out onto the dock just as the sun starts to rise and the day shift workers show up. All the evidence of last night's crimes have been wiped out. While we went out to sea, another crew came in to clean out the container and dispose of the evidence inside it.It's now somewhere in the container yard, hidden among stacks of other containers. No one will ever find it.Two more containers filled with dead humans now lie at the bottom of the ocean. Their families will never find them, they will never know peace. They will always wonder about their loved ones and what became of them. It’s one of the worst things I’ve ever had to do, but it needed to be done. If I didn’t have the police breathing down my neck, and if Sforza wasn’t missing, I could have left the containers at the harbour for the workers to find. The police can't tie me to the crimes, but they would have come knocking. And I can't handle more eyes on me. Not right now.We sneak off the empty cargo ship, and leave
RafaelMy nerves are bundled tighters than a roll of twine as I watch the container ship coming in. The other two are right behind him.Madeleine showing up here complicated tonight's work. She infiltrated my mind, made it so I can't separate her out, can't protect her. Even now, as I watch the ship pulling in, I can't stop thinking about her. Can't stop worrying. And later, when we're alone, I'll have to remind her to stay out of my business. Quite how I'm going to drive the message home I don't know yet.Rossi gets off with the last ship. He looks around the docks at the open container, then reaches inside his jacket to get his firearm. His eyes flicker to my men. He shakes his head and drops his hand. "It's not worth it."I nod. "Smart decision.""Let them all go!" Anthony barks an order to his crew. "You took tons of lil girls for Sforza," Frankie says.Anthony nods. "We worked through three middle men. I got my taste, but Sforza made the most money. Without him here... all that
